Background: Abdominal pain after bariatric surgery (BS) is frequently observed. Despite numerous diagnostic tests, the cause of abdominal pain is not always found.

Objectives: To quantify type and number of diagnostic tests performed in patients with abdominal pain after BS and evaluate the burden and their yield in the diagnostic process.

A Prospective Study on the Diagnoses for Abdominal Pain After Bariatric Surgery: The OPERATE Study.

Purpose: Long-term follow-up after bariatric surgery (BS) reveals high numbers of patients with abdominal pain that often remains unexplained. The aim of this prospective study was to give an overview of diagnoses for abdominal pain, percentage of unexplained complaints, number and yield of follow-up visits, and time to establish a diagnosis.

Materials And Methods: Patients who visited the Spaarne Gasthuis Hospital, The Netherlands, between December 2020 and December 2021 for abdominal pain after BS, were eligible and followed throughout the entire episode of abdominal pain.

Foodborne botulism and the importance of recognizing the disease in the emergency department: a case report.

Background: Botulism is a rare neuroparalytic disease that has only presented itself 19 times in the last 30 years in Belgium. Patients present to emergency services with a wide range of complaints. Foodborne botulism is a forgotten yet life-threatening disease.

Biological treatment of perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) using microbial capsules of a polysulfone membrane.

Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) is a persistent organic substance that has been extensively applied in many industries and causes severe, widespread adverse health impacts on humans and the environment. The development of an effective PFOS treatment method with affordable operational costs has been expected. This study proposes the biological treatment of PFOS using microbial capsules enclosing a PFOS-reducing microbial consortium.

Combining actigraphy and experience sampling to assess physical activity and sleep in patients with psychosis: A feasibility study.

Background: Sleep disorders and reduced physical activity are common in patients with psychosis and can be related to health-related outcomes such as symptomatology and functioning. Mobile health technologies and wearable sensor methods enable continuous and simultaneous monitoring of physical activity, sleep, and symptoms in one's day-to-day environment. Only a few studies have applied simultaneous assessment of these parameters.

Man vs. machine: A meta-analysis on the added value of human support in text-based internet treatments ("e-therapy") for mental disorders.

Guided internet-based treatment is more efficacious than completely unguided or self-guided internet-based treatment, yet within the spectrum of guidance, little is known about the added value of human support compared to more basic forms of guidance. The primary aims of this meta-analysis were: (1) to examine whether human guidance was more efficacious than technological guidance in text-based internet treatments ("e-therapy") for mental disorders, and (2) whether more intensive human guidance outperformed basic forms of human guidance. PsycINFO, PubMed and Web of Science were systematically searched for randomized controlled trials that directly compared various types and degrees of online guidance.

Surgeons' preferences for using sentinel lymph node biopsy in patients with ductal carcinoma in situ.

Background: There is a large variation between Dutch hospitals in the use of Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy (SLNB) in patients with a biopsy diagnosis of Ductal Carcinoma in Situ. The aim of our study was to investigate whether this variation might be explained by preferences of surgeons, organisational factors or the influence of patients preferences.

Methods: A cross-sectional web survey was conducted among 260 Dutch oncological/breast surgeons.

As a consequence of the outbreak of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) child care facilities all over the world were temporarily closed to minimize the spread of the virus. In Netherlands, the first closure lasted for almost 2 months. The return to the child care center after this significant interruption was expected to be challenging, because earlier studies demonstrated that transitions into child care can be stressful for both children and their parents.

Mutualistic cross-feeding in microbial systems generates bistability via an Allee effect.

In microbial ecosystems, species not only compete for common resources but may also display mutualistic interactions as a result from metabolic cross-feeding. Such mutualism can lead to bistability. Depending on the initial population sizes, species will either survive or go extinct.

How Heritable are Parental Sensitivity and Limit-Setting? A Longitudinal Child-Based Twin Study on Observed Parenting.

We examined the relative contribution of genetic, shared environmental and non-shared environmental factors to the covariance between parental sensitivity and limit-setting observed twice in a longitudinal study using a child-based twin design. Parental sensitivity and parental limit-setting were observed in 236 parents with each of their same-sex toddler twin children (M  = 3.8 years; 58% monozygotic).

The influence of a six degrees of freedom couch and an individual head support in patient positioning in radiotherapy of head and neck cancer.

Reproducible patient positioning is important in radiotherapy (RT) of head-and-neck cancer. We therefore compared set-up errors in head-and-neck RT resulting from three different patient positioning systems. Patients were either treated with a standard head support (SHS) and conventional treatment couch (SHS-3, n = 10), a SHS and rotational couch (SHS-6, n = 10), or an individual head support (IHS) and rotational couch (IHS-6, n = 10).

Excitable dynamics through toxin-induced mRNA cleavage in bacteria.

Toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems in bacteria and archaea are small genetic elements consisting of the genes coding for an intracellular toxin and an antitoxin that can neutralize this toxin. In various cases, the toxins cleave the mRNA. In this theoretical work we use deterministic and stochastic modeling to explain how toxin-induced cleavage of mRNA in TA systems can lead to excitability, allowing large transient spikes in toxin levels to be triggered.

Spiculous skeleton formation in the freshwater sponge under hypergravity conditions.

Successful dispersal of freshwater sponges depends on the formation of dormant sponge bodies (gemmules) under adverse conditions. Gemmule formation allows the sponge to overcome critical environmental conditions, for example, desiccation or freezing, and to re-establish as a fully developed sponge when conditions are more favorable. A key process in sponge development from hatched gemmules is the construction of the silica skeleton.

Integrated culturing, modeling and transcriptomics uncovers complex interactions and emergent behavior in a three-species synthetic gut community.

The composition of the human gut microbiome is well resolved, but predictive understanding of its dynamics is still lacking. Here, we followed a bottom-up strategy to explore human gut community dynamics: we established a synthetic community composed of three representative human gut isolates ( L1-82, A2-165 and S5a33) and explored their interactions under well-controlled conditions in vitro. Systematic mono- and pair-wise fermentation experiments confirmed competition for fructose and cross-feeding of formate.

Low frequency of acetyl salicylic acid hypersensitivity in mastocytosis: The results of a double-blind, placebo-controlled challenge study.

Background: Patients with mastocytosis are at increased risk of anaphylaxis. The use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is often discouraged because of this reason. However, the actual prevalence and severity of NSAID-related hypersensitivity among patients with mastocytosis is unknown.

Impact of spherical projectiles into a viscoplastic fluid.

We study the behavior of a yield-stress fluid following the impact of a vertically falling sphere. Since the impact produces shear stresses larger than the yield stress, the material in the vicinity of the impact becomes fluidized. The sphere entrains air when it enters the fluid, and the resulting cavity pinches off below the surface.

Collapse of a rectangular well in a quasi-two-dimensional granular bed.

We report on an experimental and numerical study of the collapse under gravity of a rectangular well in a quasi-two-dimensional granular bed. For comparison, we also perform experiments on the collapse of a single vertical step. Experiments are conducted in a vertical Hele-Shaw cell, which allows the flow to be recorded from the side using high-speed video.

Shape of impact craters in granular media.

We present the results of experiments studying the shape of craters formed by the normal impact of a solid spherical projectile into a deep noncohesive granular bed at low energies. The resultant impact crater surfaces are accurately digitized using laser profilometry, allowing for the detailed investigation of the crater shape. We find that these impact craters are very nearly hyperbolic in profile.

Dynamic compartmentalization of bacteria: accurate division in E. coli.

Positioning of the midcell division plane within the bacterium E. coli is controlled by the min system of proteins: MinC, MinD, and MinE. These proteins coherently oscillate from end to end of the bacterium.
