Azlactone is an important starting material for synthesizing amino acids containing a quaternary α-carbon. In this study, we have developed a sequential "one-pot" procedure involving an enantioselective spirocyclization reaction followed by acidic azlactone opening, which led to amino acid derivatives. The key step of this procedure is a spirocyclization between propargylated azlactones and enals by using a cooperative catalytic approach that combines chiral secondary amine and achiral Pd(0) complexes.

Mg-Y-Zn-Al alloys processed by the rapidly solidified ribbon consolidation (RSRC) technique are candidate materials for structural applications due to their improved mechanical performance. Their outstanding mechanical strength is attributed to solute-enriched stacking faults (SESFs), which can form cluster-arranged layers (CALs) and cluster-arranged nanoplates (CANaPs) or complete the long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase. The thermal stability of these solute arrangements strongly influences mechanical performance at elevated temperatures.

Chiral indoles annulated on the benzene ring are unique and significant in natural and medicinal compounds. However, accessing these enantioenriched molecules has often been overlooked. The present study introduces an organocatalytic protocol to access these compounds efficiently, demonstrated by substrate scope, functional group tolerance, and using only 1 mol % of a chiral conjugated acid catalyst.

Herein, we present a highly enantioselective desymmetrization of 3-substituted oxetanes enabled by a confined chiral phosphoric acid. This metal-free process allows effective access to chiral seven-membered 1,4-benzoxazepines with a high degree of enantiocontrol, under mild reaction conditions. The developed synthetic strategy tolerates a broad substrate scope and demonstrates its synthetic utility in various enantioselective product transformations, thus proving its effectiveness in diverse scenarios.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of a 6-month walking intervention, which includes self-monitoring and telephone counseling, on improving functional capacity in patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction.
  • It used a randomized controlled trial design, recruiting participants from six centers in the Czech Republic, focusing on those with specific health criteria and excluding those with higher initial functional capacity.
  • The main outcome measured was the distance walked in a 6-minute test after 6 months, along with various secondary outcomes related to physical activity, health biomarkers, and quality of life.

Background: Physical activity is an effective management strategy for heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, but patients' compliance is challenging. Walking is a suitable form of physical activity due to its convenience and sustainability, and it can potentially improve functional capacity in heart failure patients.

Objectives: The WATCHFUL trial aims to determine whether a pedometer-based walking intervention combined with face-to-face sessions and regular telephone contact improves functional capacity in heart failure patients.

The phase structure and composition of a series of four alloys based on FeAl was investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The materials were composed of Fe and Al with a fixed ratio of 3:1 alloyed with V, Cr and Ni at 8, 12, 15 and 20 at. % each (composition formula: Fe AlVCrNi).

The creep properties of a laser-directed energy deposition (L-DED) technique manufactured Inconel 718 (IN718) was investigated at 650 °C/700 MPa. Microstructure and creep properties of L-DED IN718 samples were tailored by various post heat treatments involving homogenization heat treatment with temperature ranging from 1080 to 1180 °C + double aging and hot isostatic pressing (HIP). Microstructural changes and their influence on the creep behavior and fracture mechanism were observed and discussed.

Two novel ignition-resistant magnesium alloys, Mg-2Gd-2Y-1Ca and Mg-2Nd-1Y-1Ca, were prepared in the ultrafine-grain condition by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP). In addition, four commercial alloys-AZ31, AX41, AE42 and WE43-were prepared similarly as a reference. The microstructure, mechanical properties and ignition temperature were thoroughly investigated.

Photoluminescent gold nanoclusters are widely seen as a promising candidate for applications in biosensing and bioimaging. Although they have many of the required properties, such as biocompatibility and photostability, the luminescence of near infrared emitting gold nanoclusters is still relatively weak compared to the best available fluorophores. This study contributes to the ongoing debate on the possibilities and limitations of improving the performance of gold nanoclusters by combining them with plasmonic nanostructures.

The present study reports an asymmetric organocascade reaction of oxindole-derived alkenes with 3-bromo-1-nitropropane efficiently catalyzed by the bifunctional catalyst. Spirooxindole-fused cyclopentanes were produced in moderate-to-good isolated yields (15-69%) with excellent stereochemical outcomes. The synthetic utility of the protocol was exemplified on a set of additional transformations of the corresponding spirooxindole compounds.

Over the last ten years, the combination of organocatalysis with transition metal (TM) catalysis has become one of the most important toolboxes used for synthesizing optically pure compounds containing chiral quaternary centers, including spiro heterocyclic molecules. The dominant method in the enantioselective synthesis of spiro heterocyclic compounds based on synergistic catalysis includes chiral aminocatalysis and NHC catalysis, as already established covalent organocatalytic strategies. Another area of organocatalysis widely combined with TM catalysis producing enantiomerically enriched spiro heterocyclic compounds is non-covalent catalysis, dominated by chiral phosphoric acids, thiourea, and squaramide derivatives.

The present study reports an asymmetric NHC-catalyzed formal [4 + 2] cycloaddition of heterocyclic alkenes containing a polarized double bond with an azolium-dienolate intermediate generated from α-bromo-α,β-unsaturated aldehydes without external oxidation of the Breslow intermediate. Heterocyclic cyclohexenones were produced in good isolated yields (typically about 90%) with good stereochemical outcomes (in most cases, dr > 20/1, and ee = 70-99%). The synthetic utility of the protocol was exemplified by the scope of heterocyclic alkenes.

Background: Perforator mapping using diagnostic methods facilitates deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap planning. Computed tomographic angiography (CTA) is a well-proven tool for perforator mapping. However, the benefits of color Doppler ultrasonography (CDU) are as follows: 1) CDU involves dynamic real-time examination and 2) does not use radiation.

In the field of magnesium-based degradable implantable devices, the Mg-Y-RE-Zr alloying system (WE-type) has gained popularity due to its satisfying degradation rate together with mechanical strength. However, utilization of RE and Zr in the WE-type alloys was originally driven to improve Mg-based alloys for high-temperature applications in the industry, while for medical purposes, there is a question of whether the amount of alloying elements may be further optimized. For this reason, our paper presents the Mg-3Y (W3) magnesium alloy as an alternative to the WE43 alloy.

In this paper, a new method for detecting and estimating the parameters of a binary phase shift keying (BPSK) signal, based on a cross-correlation function, is proposed. The proposed method consists of two stages. The first stage is used to detect or estimate a signal carrier frequency, and the second stage is used to estimate its pulse width or symbol rate.

Photoluminescent (PL) gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) show many advantages over conventional semiconductor quantum dots, however, their application potential is limited by their relatively low absorption cross-section and quantum yield. Plasmonic enhancement is a common strategy for improving the performance of weak fluorophores, yet in the case of AuNCs this method is still poorly explored. Here a robust synthetic approach to a compact plasmonic nanostructure enhancing significantly the PL of AuNCs is presented.
