Background: There is a shift in focus of the curricula of undergraduate midwifery research-education - from research content to the research process, and the student from being an observer to a participant.

Aim And Methods: To explore an example of how to involve midwifery students as co-investigators in research. This paper discusses the experiences of an educational research project that adopted the highest level of student autonomy in research, involving six Bachelor of Midwifery final-year students participating as co-investigators in qualitative research focusing on women's lived experiences of traumatic childbirth.

From 1994 to 2004, Hill's Pet Nutrition received 4495 canine (65%) and feline (35%) uroliths from Benelux veterinary practitioners. They were sent to the Minnesota Urolith Center, USA for analysis. In 1994, 110 uroliths were analysed - 85% from dogs - and in 2003, 1067 uroliths were analysed - 59% from dogs.

Thirty-one outbreaks of Marek's disease (MD) were reported in the Netherlands and retrospectively analyzed. The outbreaks occurred mostly in vaccinated commercial layer and a few breeder flocks of several breeds; however, the cause of the outbreaks could not be established. The virion host shutoff (vhs) protein of alphaherpesviruses causes a rapid shutoff of host cell protein synthesis. We constructed a bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV1) deletion mutant in which the putative vhs gene, UL41, has been disrupted. Whereas protein synthesis is inhibited within 3 h after infection with wild-type BHV1, no inhibition was observed after infection with the BHV1(vhs-) deletion mutant.

A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was developed to detect bovine herpesvirus 4 (BHV4) glycoprotein B (gB) DNA, and a nested-PCR assay was modified for the detection of BHV4 thymidine kinase (TK) DNA in bovine milk samples. To identify false-negative PCR results, internal control templates were constructed, added to milk samples, and co-amplified with viral DNA using the same primers for both templates. Specificity, sensitivity, and reproducibility of the two PCR assays were examined.

Glycoprotein E (gE) of bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV1) forms a complex with glycoprotein I (gI) and plays an important role in cell-to-cell spread mechanisms of the virus, but is not essential for propagation of the virus. To study the antigenic variability of BHV1 glycoprotein E, a set of six well characterised monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) was established using BHV1 gE and gI deletion mutants, eukaryotically expressed gE and gI and pepscan analysis. Two of these MAbs reacted with a linear gE epitope (MAbs 3 and 52), two reacted with a more conformation dependent gE epitope (MAbs 61 and 81) and two reacted with epitopes formed by a complex formed between gE and glycoprotein I (MAbs 67 and 75).

In a bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV1) vaccine strain, a spontaneous BHV1 mutant (Za) was found that arose from a recombination between two isomeric forms of the BHV1 genome. In this Za mutant one end of the U(S) region, containing part of the US1.5 gene, was found duplicated in an inverted orientation at the other end of the U(S) region.

Information on food intake during weaning was collected as part of a mixed-longitudinal study on the nutritional status and growth of the 1985 Dutch birth cohort of infants on macrobiotic diets (n = 53) and a matched control group on omnivorous diets (m = 57). Weighed food records over 3d, including breast-milk, were obtained on 49 macrobiotic and 57 control infants at 2-monthly intervals between the ages of 6 and 16 months. Intake of energy and nutrients was calculated using the Dutch food composition table which was supplemented by our own analyses of 50 macrobiotic foods.
