(1) Background: Medical graduates who have undertaken longitudinal rural training have consistently been found to be more likely to become rural doctors and work in primary care settings. A limitation of such findings is the heterogeneous nature of rural medical education and contested views of what constitutes 'rurality', especially as it is often reported as a binary concept (rural compared to metropolitan). To address the identified gaps in workforce outcomes for rural medical training and to demonstrate accountability to the communities we serve, we investigated whether Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (LIC) graduates are practicing in communities with similar rural classification to those where they trained.

Objective: Blink reflexes following supraorbital nerve (SON) stimulation are typically modulated by conditioning stimuli (CS) to the index finger (D2) (low-intensity, prepulse inhibition paradigm) or SON (same intensity, paired-pulse paradigm). We aimed to disentangle whether CS-intensity or CS-induced motor responses define blink reflex modulation.

Methods: In 35 subjects, test SON stimuli (8 times sensory threshold, 8 × ST) were applied either alone or following CS.

Background: Management of type 1 diabetes (T1D) requires the use of insulin, which can cause hypoglycaemia (low blood glucose levels). While most hypoglycaemic episodes can be self-treated, all episodes can be sudden, inconvenient, challenging to prevent or manage, unpleasant and/or cause unwanted attention or embarrassment. Severe hypoglycaemic episodes, requiring assistance from others for recovery, are rare but potentially dangerous.

Article Synopsis
  • Accessing sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services in rural Australia is complicated by various barriers and facilitators, impacting women's overall health and contributing to health inequities.
  • A systematic review of literature from 2013 to 2023 identified 50 studies, mainly focusing on primary care and maternity services, revealing both supply-side barriers (like limited services and high costs) and demand-side barriers (such as lack of awareness and travel issues).
  • The study also emphasized the importance of improving healthcare systems and promoting patient-centered care to enhance accessibility and reduce inequities in SRH services for women in rural areas.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study reviewed longitudinal research to find links between the built environment and the incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2DM), focusing on aspects like walkability, green spaces, and food environment, following the PRISMA guidelines.
  • - The review included 16 studies from seven countries with over 13 million participants, finding that unhealthy food environments increased T2DM risk, while more greenery and walkable areas reduced it.
  • - Key findings highlighted a 21% higher risk of T2DM in unhealthy food environments and a 18% lower risk associated with green/open spaces, with a modest 2% reduction in T2DM incidence linked to greater walkability.

Post-traumatic Parkinsonism (PTP) is a complex neurological disorder that is often associated with the occurrence of a traumatic brain injury (TBI). PTP can occur either in the acute or chronic phase of TBI. There is still uncertainty about the mechanisms provoking PTP, which can be the result of the acute blast itself or secondary neurodegenerative process occurring months to years post the acute trauma.

Background: It is vital that health service delivery and health interventions address patients' needs or preferences, are relevant for practice and can be implemented. Involving those who will use or deliver healthcare in priority-setting can lead to health service delivery and research that is more meaningful and impactful. This is particularly crucial in rural communities, where limited resources and disparities in healthcare and health outcomes are often more pronounced.

Context: There is growing evidence supporting a shift towards 'grow your own' approaches to recruiting, training and retaining health professionals from and for rural communities. To achieve this, there is a need for sound methodologies by which universities can describe their area of geographic focus in a precise way that can be utilised to recruit students from their region and evaluate workforce outcomes for partner communities. In Australia, Deakin University operates a Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training (RHMT) program funded Rural Clinical School and University Department of Rural Health, with the purpose of producing a graduate health workforce through the provision of rural clinical placements in western and south-western Victoria.

Objective: Persistent fatigue is a major symptom of the so-called 'long-COVID syndrome', but the pathophysiological processes that cause it remain unclear. We hypothesized that fatigue after COVID-19 would be associated with altered cortical activity in premotor and motor regions.

Methods: We used transcranial magnetic stimulation combined with EEG (TMS-EEG) to explore the neural oscillatory activity of the left primary motor area (l-M1) and supplementary motor area (SMA) in a group of sixteen post-COVID patients complaining of lingering fatigue as compared to a sample of age-matched healthy controls.

People in custody are at high risk of developing depression. Accessing psychological treatments in a prison setting is a particular challenge, in part, due to difficulties accessing specialist mental health workers. Behavioural Activation (BA) may be helpful in improving health outcomes for people in custody experiencing depressive symptoms.

Globally, the nursing profession constitutes the largest proportion of the health workforce; however, it is challenged by widespread workforce shortages relative to need. Strategies to promote recruitment of the nursing workforce are well-established, with a lesser focus on strategies to alleviate the burden on the existing workforce. This burden may be exacerbated by the impact of low-value health care, characterised as health care that provides little or no benefit for patients, or has the potential to cause harm.
