In most experimental protocols, false starts are produced on dry bones obtained through a maceration process for anthropological analyses, for the sake of reproducibility. Although this allows for controlled experimental conditions, the absence of soft parts when experimentally creating false starts does not correspond to the real conditions of criminal dismemberment. In this experiment, 170 experimental false starts on human (120 lesions) and pig bones (50 lesions) were analyzed under stereomicroscope. The goal was to evaluate the potential of three "secondary" features (patterns of striae on the kerf floor, blade drift and bone islands) to diagnose saw class and saw set. A total of 30 lesions were produced and analyzed using stereomicroscopy and then reexamined after carbonization.
