Allergic asthma was considered as an inflammation mediated by specific CD4 helper lymphocytes (Th2); however, this paradigm changed in 2005, when a third group of helper cells called Th17 cells were identified. Th17 lymphocytes are the main source of interleukin (IL)-17A-F, IL-21, and IL-22; however, their physiological role in children is unclear. This study aimed to determine the percentage of Th17 cells and IL-17A in pediatric patients diagnosed with asthma and to associate it with disease control using a validated questionnaire.

Programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) and ICOS-L (also referred to as B7 homolog 1 and 2, respectively) modulate the immune inflammatory response. The aim of the present study was to examine the expression levels of these inflammatory mediators in two groups of patients with an () infection; patients with and without gastric cancer. The association between bacterial virulence factors, CagA and VacA, was also examined, as well as their correlation with the inflammatory profile.

Chronic passage of gastric and/or alimentary material into the airways is a frequent and difficult-to-diagnose condition. Because alveolar macrophages phagocytose aspirated material, it has been suggested that their identification is a useful diagnostic method. To know the usefulness of the lipid-laden alveolar macrophages (LLAM) index as a diagnostic tool for aspiration, children from 1 month to 16 years of age were included in three groups: G-I, children with pulmonary pathology and suspicion of aspiration by clinic or image evaluation; G-II, with pulmonary pathology without suspicion of aspiration; and G-III, without respiratory symptoms nor suspicion of aspiration.
