Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed a methoxylated fraction from Seub for its ability to inhibit myeloperoxidase (MPO) chlorinating activity.
  • The fraction, which included specific flavonols identified through advanced chemical analysis, showed stronger inhibition of MPO activity compared to the broader ethyl acetate extract.
  • Molecular docking and dynamics studies indicated that these flavonols interact with the MPO binding site similarly to a known inhibitor, suggesting potential for further research in treating inflammation-related diseases.

High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to a diode-array detector (DAD) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (MS) was applied for the separation and identification of phenolic compounds in the n-hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol crude extract of Barbacenia blanchetii. The MS, MSn and UV data together with chemosystematic evidence allowed the structural characterization of five compounds: tricin, chrysoeriol, epi-gallocatechin, kaempferol 3-O-glucoside and caffeoylquinic acid. At the same time, these extracts were evaluated against butyrylcholinesterase using Ellman's method.

Background: Naringin is an important flavanone with several biological activities, including antioxidant action. However, this compound shows low solubility in lipophilic preparations, such as is used in the cosmetic and food industries. One way to solve this problem is to add fatty acids to the flavonoid sugar unit using immobilized lipase.
