Article Synopsis
- Regional anaesthesia is frequently used for foot and ankle surgeries, and this study aimed to compare the effectiveness of a surgeon-delivered metatarsal block vs. an ultrasound-guided ankle block for pain management post-surgery.
- In a double-blinded randomized controlled trial involving 50 patients, both groups received 20mls of 0.5% levobupivacaine, and the results showed no significant difference in pain scores at multiple time intervals.
- The study concluded that the metatarsal block provided comparable pain relief and safety to the ultrasound-guided block, with slightly faster recovery of normal sensation but similar times for safe mobilization.
