Background: In a previous study located in Northeastern British Columbia (Canada), we observed associations between density and proximity of oil and gas wells and indoor air concentrations of certain volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Whether conventional or unconventional well types and phases of unconventional development contribute to these associations remains unknown.

Objective: To investigate the associations between proximity-based metrics for conventional and unconventional wells and measured indoor air VOC concentrations in the Exposures in the Peace River Valley (EXPERIVA) study samples.

Biomonitoring studies have shown that pregnant women living in regions of unconventional natural gas (UNG) exploitation have higher levels of trace elements. Whether developmental endocrine disruption can be expected at these exposure levels during pregnancy is unclear. In this study, we aimed to test the impact of five trace elements alone or in mixtures using in vitro cell- and tissue-based assays relevant to endocrine disruption and development.

Northeastern British Columbia is a region of prolific unconventional oil and gas (UOG) activity. UOG activity can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which can elevate oxidative stress and disrupt antioxidant activity in exposed pregnant individuals, potentially increasing the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. This study measured biomarkers of oxidative stress and antioxidant activity in pooled urine samples of 85 pregnant individuals living in Northeastern British Columbia, to analyze associations between indoor air VOCs, oil and gas well density and proximity metrics, and biomarker concentrations.

Background: Healthy after-school activities such as participation in organised sport have been shown to serve as important resources for reducing school failure and other problem/high-risk behaviour. It remains to be established to what extent organised sport participation has positive impacts on young people in unstable life circumstances.

Objectives: What are the effects of organised sport on risk behaviour, personal, emotional and social skills of young people, who either have experienced or are at-risk of experiencing an adverse outcome?

Search Methods: The database searches were carried out in March 2023 and other sources were searched in May 2023.

Background: Oil and gas exploitation can release several contaminants in the environment, including trace elements, with potentially deleterious effects on exposed pregnant individuals and their developing fetus. Currently, there is limited data on pregnant individuals' exposure to contaminants associated with oil and gas activity.

Objectives: We aimed to 1)measure concentrations of trace elements in biological and tap water samples collected from pregnant individuals participating in the EXPERIVA study; 2)compare with reference populations and health-based guidance values; 3)assess correlations across matrices; and 4)evaluate associations with the density/proximity of oil and gas wells.

Good knowledge of echocardiography is essential for modern intensive care medicine. A standardized curriculum for acquiring the expertise to perform TTE and TEE is a good way to strengthen one's own diagnostic skills. The EDEC curriculum from ESICM, which has been established for years, offers a good opportunity for structural further training at the advanced level in combination with gaining a high level of professional competence.

Background: Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is detected in the blood of virtually all biomonitoring study participants. Assessing health risks associated with blood PFOA levels is challenging because exposure guidance values (EGVs) are typically expressed in terms of external dose. Biomonitoring equivalents (BEs) consistent with EGVs could facilitate health-based interpretations.

This is the protocol for a Campbell systematic review. The main objective of this review is to answer the research question: What are the effects of organised sport on risk behaviour, personal, emotional and social skills of young people, who either have experienced or is at-risk of experiencing an adverse outcome? Further, the review will attempt to answer if the effects differ between participants characteristics such as gender, age and risk indicator or between types of sport (e.g.

Background: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are transferred from mother to infants through breastfeeding, a time when children may be particularly vulnerable to PFAS-mediated adverse health effects. Infants can also be exposed to PFAS from infant formula consumption. Our recent literature-based scoping of breast milk levels reported that four PFAS often exceeded the United States Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) children's drinking water screening levels in both the general population and highly impacted communities in the U.

Human biomonitoring (HBM) data measured in specific contexts or populations provide information for comparing population exposures. There are numerous health-based biomonitoring guidance values, but to locate these values, interested parties need to seek them out individually from publications, governmental reports, websites and other sources. Until now, there has been no central, international repository for this information.

As toxicologists and risk assessors move away from animal testing and more toward using models and biological modeling, it is necessary to produce tools to quantify the chemical distribution within the environment prior to extrapolating concentrations to human equivalent doses. Although models predicting chemical distribution have been developed, very little has been done for repeated dosing scenarios, which are common in prolonged experiments where the medium needs to be refreshed. Failure to account for repeated dosing may lead to inaccurate estimations of exposure and introduce bias into subsequent to extrapolations.

Introduction: Insulin resistance (IR), a key pathogenesis mechanism of metabolic disorders, can be tested using homeostatic model assessment (HOMA). HOMA-IR quantifies peripheral tissue IR, whereas HOMA-β determines insulin secretion. The cross-sectional study aimed to examine non-linear associations of HOMA indices with age when adjusting for body mass index (BMI), and thus to investigate the indices' ability to reflect the real development of glucose metabolism disorders over time.

Lipophilic persistent environmental chemicals (LPECs) can accumulate in a woman's body and transfer to her developing child across the placenta and via breast milk. To assess health risks associated with developmental exposures to LPECs, we developed a pharmacokinetic (PK) model that quantifies mother-to-offspring transfer of LPECs during pregnancy and lactation and facilitates internal dosimetry calculations for offspring. We parameterized the model for mice, rats, and humans using time-varying functions for body mass and milk consumption rates.

Objectives: The first objective of this study was to examine the association between perceived injustice and opioid craving in patients with chronic pain who are prescribed opioids. We also examined whether pain intensity, negative affect, or catastrophizing mediated this association.

Methods: In this longitudinal diary study, patients (n = 103) completed a questionnaire assessing perceived injustice and then completed daily measures of pain intensity, negative affect, catastrophizing, and opioid craving for 14 consecutive days.

An expert panel was convened to provide insight and guidance on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) grouping for the purposes of protecting human health from drinking water exposures, and how risks to PFAS mixtures should be assessed. These questions were addressed through multiple rounds of blind, independent responses to charge questions, and review and comments on co-panelists responses. The experts agreed that the lack of consistent interpretations of human health risk for well-studied PFAS and the lack of information for the vast majority of PFAS present significant challenges for any mixtures risk assessment approach.

Article Synopsis
  • There is a lack of comprehensive data on PFAS concentrations in breast milk among women in the U.S. and Canada, despite 20 years of biomonitoring studies on PFAS in serum and urine.
  • The study aims to document existing breast milk PFAS concentrations, estimate levels based on maternal serum, and compare these concentrations to children's drinking water safety values.
  • Findings show that measured and estimated levels of PFOA and PFOS in breast milk often exceed safe drinking water limits for children, while PFHxS and PFNA levels are generally below these limits, though estimates can vary significantly.

The pathophysiology of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) remains elusive, leading to a lack of objective diagnostic criteria and targeted treatment. We globally evaluated immune system changes in FMS by conducting multiparametric flow cytometry analyses of peripheral blood mononuclear cells and identified a natural killer (NK) cell decrease in patients with FMS. Circulating NK cells in FMS were exhausted yet activated, evidenced by lower surface expression of CD16, CD96, and CD226 and more CD107a and TIGIT.

The study focused on changes or cut-offs of glycaemia, insulin resistance and body mass index within the C-peptide reference range (260-1730 pmol/l). The metabolic profile of individuals in the Czech Republic without diabetes (n = 3186) was classified by whiskers and quartiles of C-peptide into four groups with the following ranges: 290-510 (n = 694), 511-710 (n = 780), 711-950 (n = 720) and 951-1560 pmol/l (n = 673). Fasting levels of glucose, insulin, HOMA IR (Homeostasis Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance) and BMI (body mass index) were compared by a relevant C-peptide range.

The relationship between glycaemia and lipoprotein metabolism has not been completely clarified, and slight differences may be found between local authors, trials and evaluated parameters. Therefore this cross-sectional study investigated fasting cholesterol and glucose levels along with the determination of atherogenic index in a cohort of healthy individuals from the Czech Republic in relation to their fasting C-peptide levels. Data were collected between 2009 and 2018 and a total of 3189 individuals were stratified by C-peptide reference range (260-1730 pmol/l) into three groups - below (n = 111), within (n = 2952) and above (n = 126).
