Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate how fresh and stored platelet concentrates (PCs) behave during inflammation, specifically in a controlled human model of endotoxemia induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS).
  • Researchers found that LPS increased markers related to coagulation and clotting, leading to a generally lower clotting ability in subjects compared to controls, while platelet transfusions improved clotting time and strength in those with endotoxemia.
  • Despite these improvements in coagulation, there were no significant differences noted between the effects of fresh versus stored platelets on coagulation parameters like thrombin-antithrombin complex (TATc) or extracellular vesicles (EVs).

Engaging local communities is pivotal for wildlife conservation beyond protected areas, aligning with the 30 × 30 target of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. We assessed the effectiveness of 33 offtake indicators, derived from hunter declarations, in monitoring the status and extent of degradation of hunted wildlife sourced from camera trap surveys and faunal composition analysis. The rodents:ungulates ratio in offtake and the mean body mass of total offtake emerged as practical and robust indicators of faunal degradation within hunting systems, with significant potential for broader application in similar tropical forest environments.

Background: Patients receiving left ventricular assist device (LVAD) support require long-term anticoagulation to reduce the risk of thromboembolic complications. Apixaban is a direct oral anticoagulant that has become first-line therapy; however, its safety in LVAD recipients has not been well described.

Objectives: This study sought to investigate whether, in patients with a fully magnetically levitated LVAD, treatment with apixaban would be feasible and comparable with respect to safety and freedom from the primary composite outcome of death or major hemocompatibility-related adverse events (HRAEs) (stroke, device thrombosis, major bleeding, aortic root thrombus, and arterial non-central nervous system thromboembolism) as compared with treatment with warfarin.

Introduction And Hypothesis: Women with central sensitisation syndrome (CSS) experience poorer subjective post-operative outcomes even after successful pelvic floor reconstruction. This study tests the hypothesis that women with pelvic floor symptoms (PFS) without relevant pelvic organ prolapse (POP), are more likely to have CSS.

Methods: A questionnaire was sent to women who participated in the POP-UP study in 2017.

Implantable left ventricular assist device (LVAD) therapy is used to improve quality of life, alleviate symptoms and extend survival rates in patients with advanced heart failure. Patients with LVADs require chronic anticoagulation to reduce the risk of thromboembolic complications, and they commonly experience bleeding events. Apixaban is a direct oral anticoagulant that has become first-line therapy for patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation and venous thromboembolism; however, its safety in patients with LVADs has not been well characterized.

Central nervous system tumours represent one of the most lethal cancer types, particularly among children. Primary treatment includes neurosurgical resection of the tumour, in which a delicate balance must be struck between maximizing the extent of resection and minimizing risk of neurological damage and comorbidity. However, surgeons have limited knowledge of the precise tumour type prior to surgery.

Introduction: While there is a plethora of research that documents the numerous barriers affecting female leaders in the modern workplace, there is a lack of literature which focuses on strategies or motivating resources that women use to navigate the workplace environment. Despite facing significant barriers in their leadership journeys, there are female leaders who are able to overcome these barriers to achieve leadership positions. These women leaders draw on personal and external motivating factors to assist them in dealing with the challenges associated with being a female leader as a result, research on motivating strategies for women's career progression is a research topic that warrants immediate attention.

  • Laparoscopic uterosacral ligament suspension (LUSLS) is a surgical method designed to treat apical pelvic organ prolapse (POP) by tightening the uterosacral ligaments.
  • A systematic review of 13 studies involving 933 patients indicated a high anatomic success rate of 90%, with even higher rates when combined with hysterectomy.
  • The procedure shows a low complication rate of 1% and a subjective cure rate of 90.5%, but the authors call for more long-term and randomized studies to validate these results.

DNA methylation is important for establishing and maintaining cell identity and for genomic stability. This is achieved by regulating the accessibility of regulatory and transcriptional elements and the compaction of subtelomeric, centromeric, and other inactive genomic regions. Carcinogenesis is accompanied by a global loss in DNA methylation, which facilitates the transformation of cells.

Background: Cystic fibrosis (CF) disease severity can be highly variable, even between people with CF (pwCF) with similar genotypes. Here we use patient-derived intestinal organoids to study the influence of genetic variation within the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene on CFTR function.

Methods: Organoids of F508del/class I, F508del/S1251N and pwCF with only one detected CF-causing mutation were cultured.

Monoallelic inactivation of CCCTC-binding factor (CTCF) in human cancer drives altered methylated genomic states, altered CTCF occupancy at promoter and enhancer regions, and deregulated global gene expression. In patients with T cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL), we find that acquired monoallelic CTCF-inactivating events drive subtle and local genomic effects in nearly half of t(5; 14) (q35; q32.2) rearranged patients, especially when CTCF-binding sites are preserved in between the BCL11B enhancer and the TLX3 oncogene.

Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) is an avian pathogen from the Coronavirus family causing major health issues in poultry flocks worldwide. Because of its negative impact on health, performance, and bird welfare, commercial poultry are routinely vaccinated by administering live attenuated virus. However, field strains are capable of rapid adaptation and may evade vaccine-induced immunity.
