The emerging field of orbitronics aims to generate and control orbital angular momentum for information processing. Chiral crystals are promising orbitronic materials because they have been predicted to host monopole-like orbital textures, where the orbital angular momentum aligns isotropically with the electron's crystal momentum. However, such monopoles have not yet been directly observed in chiral crystals.

Noncoplanar magnets are excellent candidates for spintronics. However, such materials are difficult to find, and even more so to intentionally design. Here, we report a chemical design strategy that allows us to find a series of noncoplanar magnets-LnSn (Ln = Dy, Tb)-by targeting layered materials that have decoupled magnetic sublattices with dissimilar single-ion anisotropies and combining those with a square-net topological semimetal sublattice.

The kagome network is a unique platform that harbors a diversity of special electronic states due to its inherent band structure features comprising Dirac cones, van Hove singularities, and flat bands. Some kagome-based metals have recently been found to exhibit favorable properties, including superconductivity, charge order, and signatures of an anomalous Hall effect. The kagome system ScVSn is a promising candidate for studying the emergence of an unconventional charge order and accompanying effects.

Axion insulators are 3D magnetic topological insulators supporting hinge states and quantized magnetoelectric effects, recently proposed for detecting dark-matter axionic particles via their axionic excitations. Beyond theoretical interest, obtaining a photonic counterpart of axion insulators offers potential for advancing magnetically-tunable photonic devices and axion haloscopes based on axion-photon conversion. This work proposes an axionic 3D phase within a photonic setup.

In topological magnetic materials, the topology of the electronic wave function is strongly coupled to the structure of the magnetic order. In general, ferromagnetic Weyl semimetals generate a strong anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) due to a large Berry curvature that scales with their magnetization. In contrast, a comparatively small AHC is observed in noncollinear antiferromagnets.

A topological magnetic material showcases a multitude of intriguing properties resulting from the compelling interplay between topology and magnetism. These include notable phenomena such as a large anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), an anomalous Hall effect (AHE), and a topological Hall effect (THE). In most cases, topological transport phenomena are prevalent at temperatures considerably lower than room temperature, presenting a challenge for practical applications.

Heusler compounds belong to a large family of materials and exhibit numerous physical phenomena with promising applications, particularly ferromagnetic Weyl semimetals for their use in spintronics and memory devices. Here, anomalous Hall transport is reported in the room-temperature ferromagnets NiMnSb (half-metal with a Curie temperature (T) of 660 K) and PtMnSb (pseudo half-metal with a T of 560 K). They exhibit 4 µ/f.

Phonons play a crucial role in many properties of solid-state systems, and it is expected that topological phonons may lead to rich and unconventional physics. On the basis of the existing phonon materials databases, we have compiled a catalog of topological phonon bands for more than 10,000 three-dimensional crystalline materials. Using topological quantum chemistry, we calculated the band representations, compatibility relations, and band topologies of each isolated set of phonon bands for the materials in the phonon databases.

Spin-orbit coupling in noncentrosymmetric crystals leads to spin-momentum locking - a directional relationship between an electron's spin angular momentum and its linear momentum. Isotropic orthogonal Rashba spin-momentum locking has been studied for decades, while its counterpart, isotropic parallel Weyl spin-momentum locking has remained elusive in experiments. Theory predicts that Weyl spin-momentum locking can only be realized in structurally chiral cubic crystals in the vicinity of Kramers-Weyl or multifold fermions.

The creation of new families of intermetallic or Zintl-phase compounds with high-spin orbit elements has attracted a considerable amount of interest due to the presence of unique electronic, magnetic, and topological phenomena in these materials. Here, we establish the synthesis and structural and electronic characterization of KMgBi single crystals having a new structure type. KMgBi crystallizes in space group having unit cell parameters = 4.

Spontaneously broken symmetries are at the heart of many phenomena of quantum matter and physics more generally. However, determining the exact symmetries that are broken can be challenging due to imperfections such as strain, in particular when multiple electronic orders are competing. This is exemplified by charge order in some kagome systems, where evidence of nematicity and flux order from orbital currents remains inconclusive due to contradictory measurements.

One-dimensional (1D) systems persist as some of the most interesting because of the rich physics that emerges from constrained degrees of freedom. A desirable route to harness the properties therein is to grow bulk single crystals of a physically three-dimensional (3D) but electronically 1D compound. Most bulk compounds which approach the electronic 1D limit still field interactions across the other two crystallographic directions and, consequently, deviate from the 1D models.

The interplay between chirality and topology nurtures many exotic electronic properties. For instance, topological chiral semimetals display multifold chiral fermions that manifest nontrivial topological charge and spin texture. They are an ideal playground for exploring chirality-driven exotic physical phenomena.

Geometrically frustrated kagome lattices are raising as novel platforms to engineer correlated topological electron flat bands that are prominent to electronic instabilities. Here, we demonstrate a phonon softening at the k = π plane in ScVSn. The low energy longitudinal phonon collapses at ~98 K and q = [Formula: see text] due to the electron-phonon interaction, without the emergence of long-range charge order which sets in at a different propagation vector q = [Formula: see text].

Three-dimensional Dirac semimetals are an exotic state of matter that continue to attract increasing attention due to the unique properties of their low-energy excitations. Here, by performing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we investigate the electronic structure of Au_{2}Pb across a wide temperature range. Our experimental studies on the (111)-cleaved surface unambiguously demonstrate that Au_{2}Pb is a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal characterized by the presence of a bulk Dirac cone projected off-center of the bulk Brillouin zone (BZ), in agreement with our theoretical calculations.

Magnetic interactions in combination with nontrivial band structures can give rise to several exotic physical properties such as a large anomalous Hall effect, the anomalous Nernst effect, and the topological Hall effect (THE). Antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials exhibit the THE due to the presence of nontrivial spin structures. EuCuAs crystallizes in a hexagonal structure with an AFM ground state (Néel temperature ∼ 16 K).

Thin layers of in-plane anisotropic materials can support ultraconfined polaritons, whose wavelengths depend on the propagation direction. Such polaritons hold potential for the exploration of fundamental material properties and the development of novel nanophotonic devices. However, the real-space observation of ultraconfined in-plane anisotropic plasmon polaritons (PPs)-which exist in much broader spectral ranges than phonon polaritons-has been elusive.

Internal interfaces in Weyl semimetals (WSMs) are predicted to host distinct topological features that are different from the commonly studied external interfaces (crystal-to-vacuum boundaries). However, the lack of atomically sharp and crystallographically oriented internal interfaces in WSMs makes it difficult to experimentally investigate topological states buried inside the material. Here, we study a unique internal interface known as twin boundary in chemically synthesized single-crystal nanowires (NWs) of CoSi, a chiral WSM of space group 23 (No.

Weyl semimetal is a unique topological phase with topologically protected band crossings in the bulk and robust surface states called Fermi arcs. Weyl nodes always appear in pairs with opposite chiralities, and they need to have either time-reversal or inversion symmetry broken. When the time-reversal symmetry is broken the minimum number of Weyl points (WPs) is two.

The discovery of new low-dimensional transition-metal chalcogenides is contributing to the already prosperous family of these materials. In this study, needle-shaped single crystals of a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) material, (NbSeI)I, were grown by chemical vapor transport, and the structure was solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD). The structure has 1D (NbSeI) chains along the [101] direction, with two I ions per formula unit directly bonded to Nb.

When electric conductors differ from their mirror image, unusual chiral transport coefficients appear that are forbidden in achiral metals, such as a non-linear electric response known as electronic magnetochiral anisotropy (eMChA). Although chiral transport signatures are allowed by symmetry in many conductors without a centre of inversion, they reach appreciable levels only in rare cases in which an exceptionally strong chiral coupling to the itinerant electrons is present. So far, observations of chiral transport have been limited to materials in which the atomic positions strongly break mirror symmetries.

Kagome magnets possess several novel nontrivial topological features owing to the strong correlation between topology and magnetism that extends to their applications in the field of thermoelectricity. Conventional thermoelectric (TE) devices use the Seebeck effect to convert heat into electrical energy. In contrast, transverse thermoelectric devices based on the Nernst effect are attracting recent attention due to their unique transverse geometry, which uses a single material to eliminate the need for a multitude of electrical connections compared to conventional TE devices.

Topological quantum chemistry (TQC) has recently emerged as an instrumental tool to characterize the topological nature of both fermionic and bosonic band structures. TQC is based on the study of band representations and the localization of maximally localized Wannier functions. In this article, we study various two-dimensional photonic crystal structures analyzing their topological character through a combined study of TQC, their Wilson-loop (WL) spectra and the electromagnetic energy density.

We report the implementation of a publicly accessible catalog of stable and fragile topology in all of the bands both at and away from in the 96,196 processable entries in the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database. Our calculations, which represent the completion of the symmetry-indicated band topology of known nonmagnetic materials, have enabled the discovery of repeat-topological and supertopological materials, including rhombohedral bismuth and BiMg.
