Isothiocyanates (ITCs) are naturally occurring sulfur-containing compounds with diverse biological effects. This study investigated the effects of sulforaphane (SFN, an aliphatic ITC) and benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC, an aromatic ITC) on human acute myeloid leukemia SKM-1 cells, focusing on cell proliferation, cell death, and drug resistance. Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is defined as increase in mean pulmonary arterial pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR). It can be associated with congenital heart disease (CHD) with the following subtypes: 1) uncorrected left-to-right (L-R) intracardiac shunt leading to overload of the pulmonary circulation and a progressive increase of PVR; 2) Eisenmenger syndrome, appearing when a large post-tricuspid shunt is left uncorrected and pulmonary vascular disease (PVD) is severe, so the shunt becomes bidirectional or right-to-left, causing cyanosis; 3) PAH after shunt closure, when PVR arises after a defect correction; and 4) PAH associated with small or coincidental defects. While the treatment of patients with Eisenmenger syndrome is well established, the treatment of patients with PAH in whom there is a L-R shunt (with no cyanosis) remains unclear and requires expertise.

The emission of microfibers (MFs) into all environmental matrices, including biota, is a global concern, but appropriate methodologies aimed at biomonitoring these pollutants are still in an exploratory stage. In this work a new method is presented for the extraction of airborne anthropogenic microfibers (MFs) from the leaves of Pittosporum tobira. The method is a sequential extraction consisting of tape tearing followed by water floating, ethanol extraction, and wet peroxidation, which considered at first outermost MFs, weakly adhering to leaf surface, and deeper MFs partly embedded in waxy cuticle layer.

Among innovative food technologies, ultrasounds have demonstrated physical damages (provided by frequency and intensity factors) on bacterial structures while determining the microbiological stabilization of many foodstuffs. This study tested the efficacy of the thermosonication process on 16 strains belonging to the academic biobank (isolated from swine slaughterhouses). All strains were exposed to focused ultrasounds, generated by the Waveco system (Milan, Italy), with the following settings: 40 KHz coupled with 80 W at different 5 min intervals starting from 5 to 15 ones, and focusing on two different temperatures: 40 °C and 50 °C.

Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) is a useful technique for detecting infectious microorganisms in human fluids since it performs similarly to conventional PCR, the results are obtained faster and no thermocyclers or complex devices are required. Since only two isothermal blocks (95 °C to lyse cells and 65 °C for DNA amplification) are needed, LAMP is particularly suited for applications in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). To validate such assumption, we first designed and tested Arduino-controlled LAMP thermoblocks to process a considerable number of samples simultaneously with a low-energy consumption to enable routine use under worst-case conditions (no main power source and low ambient temperatures).

The components of the mediator kinase module are highly conserved across all eukaryotic lineages, and cyclin-dependent kinase 8 (CDK8) is essential for correct cell proliferation and differentiation in diverse eukaryotic systems. We show that CDK8 couples leaf development with the establishment of correct stomata patterning for prevailing CO conditions. In Arabidopsis, the basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor SPEECHLESS (SPCH) controls cellular entry into the stomatal cell lineage, and CDK8 interacts with and phosphorylates SPCH, controlling SPCH protein levels and thereby also expression of the SPCH target genes encoding key regulators of cell fate and asymmetric cell divisions.
