Lactase Non-Persistence Genotyping: Comparison of Two Real-Time PCR Assays and Assessment of Concomitant Fructose/Sorbitol Malabsorption Rates.

Background: Genetic testing is a standard technique for the diagnosis of primary adult-type hypolactasia, also referred to as lactase non-persistence. The aim of this study was to compare the lactase gene (LCT) C/T-13910 polymorphism genotyping results of two commercially available real-time (RT)-PCR assays in patients referred to our outpatient clinic for primary lactose malabsorption testing. Furthermore, concomitant conditions of fructose/sorbitol malabsorption were assessed.

Clinical significance of pT sub-classification in surgical pathology of colorectal cancer.

Purpose: Tumour stage is the strongest prognostic parameter in colorectal cancer. The study aimed to evaluate the prognostic impact of pT2, pT3, and pT4 sub-classification.

Ileocecal intussusception caused by lung cancer metastasis.

Intussusception is a rare clinical finding in adults. Most cases occur in the distal small bowel or large intestine. We report the case of a 65-year-old woman with known non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who presented with acute abdomen and ileus-like symptoms.

Renal cell carcinoma metastatic to the stomach: single-centre experience and literature review.

Objectives: To investigate the incidence, clinical presentation and therapy of gastric metastases, an uncommon finding, in a large group of patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC).

Patients And Methods: We systematically searched the computerized RCC database of our institute, covering 2082 patients (1180 men and 902 women) who had surgery between January 1984 and September 2005, to identify those with a synchronous and/or metachronous diagnosis of cancer in gastric biopsies or resection specimens. The histopathological slides of both renal and gastric cancer probes, and the clinical presentation, treatment and outcome of affected patients, were reassessed.

Merkel cell carcinoma metastasizing to the kidney mimicking primary neuroendocrine renal cancer.

A 56-year-old male with a history of cutaneous neuroendocrine (Merkel cell) carcinoma presented with a solid mass of the left kidney, measuring 10 cm in largest diameter. On histology, the tumour was composed of loosely packed uniform cells with round-to-oval nuclei and scant cytoplasm. Immunohistochemically, the tumour cells diffusely expressed pancytokeratin and neuroendocrine markers, such as chromogranin A, synaptophysin and CD56 (NCAM).
