[Psychotherapy in the somatic field--what specificities?].

This article illustrates some of the specific aspects of the psychotherapeutic approach with medically ill patients. Our considerations are based on our daily work in CL Psychiatry and refer to the psychodynamic model, rooted in Freudian's thought. Characteristics are the setting, as well as the relationship with the patient and the interactions with the physicians as the "emergence" of the suffering body within the therapy.

[The role of the auxiliary ego in the care of the chronic pain patient].

The management of the patient suffering from chronic pain, situated on the interface between body and psyche, necessitates a global approach and often a coordinated, stable and containing network of care. Liaison psychiatry has become part of this network, together with various health care professionals from somatic disciplines. Based on these experiences, this article aims to better understand the therapeutic role of those who take care of the chronic pain patient by identifying the auxiliary ego as a key element of care.

Antidepressants for the treatment of chronic pain.

Chronic pain represents one of the most important public health problems and, in addition to classical analgesics, antidepressants are an essential part of the therapeutic strategy. This article reviews available evidence on the efficacy and safety of antidepressants in major chronic pain conditions; namely, neuropathic pain, headaches, low back pain, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and cancer pain. Studies, reviews and meta-analyses published from 1991 to March 2008 were retrieved through MEDLINE, PsycINFO and the Cochrane database using numerous key words for pain and antidepressants.

[Neuropathic pain: tips and tools for specific and comprehensive pain management].

Neuropathic pain syndromes are characterized by intense and long lasting pain that is resistant to usual analgesics. Patients are therefore at high risk of decreased quality of life and impaired well-being. Using a case report, we will consider in this article the diagnosis and treatment of neuropathic pain as well as its impact on the quality of life including psychological consequences such as depression and anxiety.
