Article Synopsis
  • Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a serious condition causing unpredictable swelling attacks, and over the past decade, new treatments for long-term prophylaxis (LTP) have emerged based on a better understanding of its biology.
  • A study conducted in France in 2020 surveyed physicians from 25 expert centers about their practices, treatments, and the unmet needs of HAE patients; ultimately focusing on 20 centers with active patient files.
  • Of the 714 patients with C1 inhibitor deficiency, 59.2% were on LTP, but many still faced unmet needs related to treatment tolerability, efficacy, and cost; physicians expressed a desire for more effective, better-tolerated, and affordable therapies

Mycoplasmas are the smallest free-living organisms. These bacteria are important models for both fundamental and synthetic biology, owing to their highly reduced genomes. They are also relevant in the medical and veterinary fields, as they are pathogenic to both humans and most livestock species.

Aim: Hospital food provision is subject to multiple constraints (meal production, organization, health safety, environmental respect) which influence the meal tray offered to the patient. Multiple diets can add complexity and contribute to non-consumption of the meal. To avoid undernutrition, it appeared necessary to propose guidelines for foods and diets in hospitals.

Zinc and copper are involved in neuronal differentiation and synaptic plasticity but the molecular mechanisms behind these processes are still elusive due in part to the difficulty of imaging trace metals together with proteins at the synaptic level. We correlate stimulated-emission-depletion microscopy of proteins and synchrotron X-ray fluorescence imaging of trace metals, both performed with 40 nm spatial resolution, on primary rat hippocampal neurons. We reveal the co-localization at the nanoscale of zinc and tubulin in dendrites with a molecular ratio of about one zinc atom per tubulin-αβ dimer.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to create an algorithm to detect and classify pulmonary nodules in two categories based on their volume greater than 100 mm or not, using machine learning and deep learning techniques.

Materials And Method: The dataset used to train the model was provided by the organization team of the SFR (French Radiological Society) Data Challenge 2019. An asynchronous and parallel 3-stages pipeline was developed to process all the data (a data "pre-processing" stage; a "nodule detection" stage; a "classifier" stage).

Background: Intramedullary spinal cord abscesses (ISCA) are a rare pathological entity with very few cases reported in the world and may be confused with an intramedullary tumor. Cervical location is the least frequently affected, except for cryptogenic spread, mostly seen in adult patients. Meticulous study of contrast-enhanced MRI pictures has a key role in the diagnosis.

Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the health and social conditions of arrestees, as compared to the general population.

Methods: We studied a sample of 600 adult arrestees in three locations in the Greater Paris area, prospectively included (February-May 2013). A descriptive analysis has been performed, then prevalence was estimated using an indirect standardisation according to age, based on data from a population-based, representative survey in the same area.

Isolation and characterization of common scab (CS) pathogen Streptomyces spp. from Uruguayan potato tubers and soil samples were done in response to significant economic losses due to CS on potato in autumn 2010. Seventy of the 331 isolates were classified as pathogenic owing to their ability to induce necrosis on tuber disks and stunting of radish seedling.

Article Synopsis
  • Initial symptoms resembled pseudoachalasia, which did not improve with endoscopic dilatation, but surgery alleviated the dysphagia by correcting a strangulated esophagus.
  • After several months, symptoms returned despite repeated treatments, but a conservative approach using an endoscopic prosthesis successfully restored normal eating habits and resulted in a 10 kg weight gain over 30 months.

The importance of the preservation of the subacromial arch has been stressed recently, especially in irreparable lesions of the rotator cuff to prevent anterosuperior migration of the humeral head. The purpose of this article is to describe the surgical technique of a modified open anterior acromioplasty performed through an intra-acromial osteotomy that increases the subacromial space and preserves the insertion of the coracoacromial ligament on the undersurface of the acromion. To compare this new technique with classical acromioplasty, a prospective but nonrandomized study was performed including 20 patients undergoing open anterior acromioplasty and 22 patients undergoing a modified open anterior acromioplasty.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between lower esophageal sphincter (LES) relaxation and esophageal body inhibition during different types of stimuli and their effects on acid reflux.
  • Swallowing reliably relaxes the LES without causing reflux, while pharyngeal stimulation also relaxes the LES but does not affect the high-pressure zone or cause reflux.
  • Gastric distension leads to transient LES relaxation (tLESR) and is linked to a significant occurrence of acid reflux, but LES relaxation alone is not enough to cause reflux on its own; they are independent yet can occur together.

Background: Adequate protein nutrition could be used to limit gradual body protein loss and improve protein anabolism in the elderly.

Objective: We tested the hypothesis that an uneven protein feeding pattern was more efficient in improving protein anabolism than was an even pattern.

Design: After a controlled period, 15 elderly women (mean age: 68 y) were fed for 14 d either a pulse diet (n = 7), providing 80% of the daily protein intake at 1200, or a spread diet (n = 8), in which the same daily protein intake was spread over 4 meals.
