Despite increasing attention for relationships between species richness and ecosystem services, for tropical forests such relationships are still under discussion. Contradicting relationships have been reported concerning carbon stock, while little is known about relationships concerning timber stock and the abundance of non-timber forest product producing plant species (NTFP abundance). Using 151 1-ha plots, we related tree and arborescent palm species richness to carbon stock, timber stock and NTFP abundance across the Guiana Shield, and using 283 1-ha plots, to carbon stock across all of Amazonia.

This study examined how organizational control is related to employees' organizational trust. We specifically focus on how different forms of control (process, outcome, and normative) relate to employees' trust in their employing organizations and examine whether such trust in turn relates positively to employee job performance (task performance and organizational citizenship behavior). In addition, and in response to the recommendations of past research, we examined these relationships in a high control and compliance-based cultural context.

Introduction: Several prediction scores for triaging patients with upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding have been developed, yet these scores have never been compared to the current gold standard, which is the clinical evaluation by a gastroenterologist. The aim of this study was to assess the added value of prediction scores to gastroenterologists' Gut Feeling in patients with a suspected upper GI bleeding.

Methods: WE PROSPECTIVELY EVALUATED GUT FEELING OF SENIOR GASTROENTEROLOGISTS AND ASKED THEM TO ESTIMATE: (1) the risk that a clinical intervention is needed; (2) the risk of rebleeding; and (3) the risk of mortality in patients presenting with suspected upper GI bleeding, subdivided into low, medium, or high risk.

Background & Aims: We evaluated the quality and safety of colonoscopies performed by nurse and physician endoscopy trainees as well as the cost differences.

Methods: We performed a study of 7 nurse and 8 physician (gastroenterology fellows) endoscopy trainees at 2 medical centers in the Netherlands from September 2008 through April 2012. At the beginning of the study, the subjects had no experience in endoscopy; they were trained in gastrointestinal endoscopy according to the regulations of the Dutch Society of Gastroenterology, performing a minimum of 100 colonoscopies.

In order to identify pathogenic correlates of refractory rheumatoid arthritis (RA), antibodies against anti-cyclic citrullinated protein (ACPAs) were investigated in RA patients in whom the dysregulated immune system had been ablated by high-dose chemotherapy (HDC) and autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Six patients with refractory RA were extensively characterized in terms of levels of total immunoglobulins, RA-specific autoantibodies (ACPAs and rheumatoid factor) and antibodies against rubella, tetanus toxoid (TT) and phosphorylcholine before and after HDC plus HSCT. Additionally, the avidity of ACPAs was measured before and after treatment and compared with the avidity of TT antibodies following repeated immunizations.

Background: Immunoablative therapy combined with haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (SCT) is a possible treatment for patients with severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Case Report: A patient with rheumatoid factor positive, progressively erosive RA, refractive to treatment, was treated with high dose cyclophosphamide, followed by reinfusion of an unmanipulated peripheral blood graft derived from her identical twin sister. The clinical response was unsatisfactory, necessitating reinstitution of treatment with disease modifying antirheumatic drugs, which was associated with persistence of host serum autoantibodies and a cellular infiltrate in synovium, notably of plasma cells.

Methods: Serial samples of peripheral blood and synovial tissue were obtained from seven patients with RA treated with HDC and autologous peripheral blood grafts enriched for CD34+ cells. Disease activity was assessed with the Disease Activity Score (DAS), serum concentrations of C reactive protein (CRP), and human immunoglobulin (HIg) scans, and the extent of immunoablation was determined by immunophenotyping of peripheral blood mononuclear cells, and immunohistochemistry and double immunofluorescence of synovium.

We previously demonstrated prolonged, profound CD4+ T-lymphopenia in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients following lymphocyte-depleting therapy. Poor reconstitution could result either from reduced de novo T-cell production through the thymus or from poor peripheral expansion of residual T-cells. Interleukin-7 (IL-7) is known to stimulate the thymus to produce new T-cells and to allow circulating mature T-cells to expand, thereby playing a critical role in T-cell homeostasis.

Watson and Humphreys (1997) have proposed that the ability to prioritize new elements over old elements involves a time-consuming process (of at least 400 msec) of active inhibition of the locations of the old elements, which they referred to as visual marking. Recently, Donk and Theeuwes (2001) have suggested that prioritized selection of new over old elements is an instantaneous process related to the luminance change accompanying the appearance of the new elements. The aim of the present study was to test these two alternatives by investigating whether prioritized selection of new over old elements could be achieved with a very short preview of the old elements (50 msec).

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, inflammatory disease of the synovium of uncertain pathogenesis. A number of phenotypic and functional T-cell defects have been described in RA, including abnormal clonal expansions and suppressed proliferative responses, which suggest a defect in T-cell differentiation. Here, we show that RA patients possess fewer naive CD4(+) T cells than healthy controls.

A new treatment approach, involving intense immunosuppression and autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (SCT), has emerged in recent years for the treatment of severe, refractory rheumatic autoimmune diseases including rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The rationale of this strategy is based on the concept of immunoablation by intense immunosuppression with subsequent regeneration of naïve T lymphocytes derived from reinfused hematopoietic progenitor cells. Patients with a therapy-refractory, progressively erosive disease who are at risk of functional disability and early mortality are considered eligible for treatment with autologous SCT.

Ten patients with active, destructive rheumatoid arthritis refractory to antirheumatic therapy enrolled in a study to evaluate the effects of intensive immunosuppression followed by autologous stem cell transplantation. Intensive immunosuppression was achieved with high dose cyclophosphamide as part of the mobilization (4 g/m2) and conditioning (200 mg/kg) regimen. The autologous stem cell products were enriched for CD34+ cells to minimize the chance of reinfusing autoreactive lymphocytes.
