Patient phosphate-binding agent prescriptions (time-varying) and the case-mix-adjusted facility percentage of phosphate-binding agent prescriptions (instrumental variable) were used as predictors of the relative all-cause and cardiovascular mortality using Cox proportional hazard regression models.

Methods: COSMOS is a multicentre, open cohort, prospective, observational 3-year study carried out in haemodialysis patients from 20 European countries during 2005-07. The present article describes the main characteristics of the European dialysis population, the current practice for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism and the differences across different European regions.
Background: Geographical differences in disease prevalence and mortality have been described in the general population and in chronic kidney disease patients in Europe. In this secondary analysis of the Membrane Permeability Outcome (MPO) study, we addressed differences in patient and treatment patterns, and whether these affect patient outcomes.
Methods: Participating countries were grouped according to geographical location; thus study centers in France, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain were allocated to southern Europe (n=499), and those in all other countries (Belgium, Germany, Poland and Sweden) to northern Europe (n=148).
Inhibitors of histone deacetylase (HDAC) have anti-inflammatory and antifibrotic effects in several organs and tissues, but their effect on the progression of renal disease is unknown. Here, we studied the effect of valproic acid in adriamycin-induced nephropathy in mice. Administration of valproic acid before kidney injury prevented the development of proteinuria and the onset of glomerulosclerosis.

Background: Cellular retinol-binding protein I (CRBP-I), a member of the intracellular lipid-binding protein (iLBP) superfamily, is a specific marker of quiescent stellate cells in the healthy human liver. In the diseased fibrotic/cirrhotic liver, portal and septal myofibroblasts acquire CRBP-I expression, while activated hepatic stellate cells maintain their CRBP-I expression. Aristolochic acid contamination in herbal remedies leads to interstitial fibrosis, tubular atrophy, and renal failure in humans. To study the cellular mechanisms contributing to the pathophysiology of this renal disease, we studied Wistar rats treated with aristolochic acid and measured tubular and interstitial cell proliferation, epithelial/mesenchymal cell marker expression, tubular membrane integrity, myofibroblast accumulation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial damage, tubular apoptosis, and fibrosis. Oxidative stress, a loss of cadherin concomitant with vimentin expression, basement membrane denudation with active caspase-3 expression, and mitochondrial injury within tubular cells were evident within 5 days of administration of the toxin.
