Onchocerciasis is a significant cause of visual impairments in regions of Africa, particularly in Gashaka LGA of Taraba State, Nigeria, where this study was conducted.
In a 2019 cohort of 158 visually impaired individuals, comprehensive eye examinations revealed that nearly half of the eye images were unsuitable for analysis, but of the analyzable images, 39% indicated chorioretinitis linked to onchocerciasis.
Various ocular manifestations were identified, including chorio-retinal atrophy, lens opacities, signs of keratoconus, and other changes, highlighting the impact of onchocerciasis on eye health.
