This study introduces a novel, cost-effective adsorbent made from phosphoric acid-modified bentonite-chitosan composite beads, designed to remove Cu⁺, Ni⁺, and Zn⁺ from aqueous solutions. Characterization of the composite revealed a mesoporous structure and the presence of functional groups that enhance its adsorption properties. Using response surface methodology, the adsorption capacities were determined as 362.

Higher prevalence of inappropriate medication use among cancer patients increases risk of drug-related problems(DRP) like drug-drug interactions, ADR, and non-adherence. Potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) and Potential Prescription Omission (PPO) were identified using Screening Tool of Older Person's Prescriptions (STOPP) and Screening Tool to Alert Doctors to the Right Treatment (START) criteria. The study objective was to optimize prescriptions for the elderly by analyzing the impact of medication review.

Molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) presents a significant clinical challenge in orthodontics, with its complex etiology, variable presentation, and profound impact on enamel homeostasis. Utilizing Simon Sinek's "Golden Circle" method, this article systematically explores the implications of MIH within orthodontic practice. The "Why" emphasizes the critical need for orthodontists to understand MIH, given its prevalence and potential to disrupt treatment outcomes.

Aims: To prospectively determine whether extrinsic warming of the low-osmolality CT contrast media (Iohexol 350, Iodixanol 320, Iopromide 300, and Iopamidol 300) to 37°C prior to intravenous administration affects extravasation and allergic-like reaction rates.

Materials And Methods: This large scale prospective case control study of adverse events included all the patients between the age group of 15-80 years undergoing routine contrast-enhanced computed tomographic (CECT) examinations from April 2018 to March 2020 at our institute. Ex vivo experiments were also performed to demonstrate change in contrast viscosity and fluid dynamics in relation to temperature.

Purpose: The Steroids and Cross-linking for Ulcer Treatment Trial is an NIH-funded international, randomized, double-masked, sham and placebo-controlled clinical trial to determine the benefit of adjunctive corneal cross-linking with riboflavin and/or topical difluprednate in addition to topical antibiotic drops for treatment of smear-positive bacterial ulcers. The purpose of this study was to explore the baseline characteristics for infection of patients enrolled, and the ocular comorbidities of patients screened for inclusion.

Methods: Of the 2005 patients with smear-positive bacterial ulcers screened, 280 patients were enrolled.

The Descemet membrane (DM) is the basement membrane of corneal endothelial cells, which are responsible for maintaining corneal transparency. DM detachment (DMD) can occur due to various reasons, with the most common etiology being post-surgical. Older age, blunt instruments, and faulty surgical technique predispose to the intraoperative or postoperative occurrence of DMD, and one should have a high index of suspicion for DMD in cases with unexplained or an atypical pattern of corneal edema after surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • Corneal perforations can threaten vision if not treated quickly, with management based on size and cause, utilizing methods like tissue adhesives and grafts.
  • Tenon's patch grafting (TPG) has gained attention as a viable option due to its accessibility and reduced risk of immune response, particularly useful during emergencies when donor tissue is scarce.
  • TPG shows high success rates (74%-87%) in repairing corneal issues, but may not always provide optimal visual outcomes, often requiring further treatment like keratoplasty for better vision restoration.

Background: Task Group 43 (TG-43) formalism does not consider the tissue and applicator heterogeneities. This study is to compare the effect of model-based dose calculation algorithms, like Advanced Collapsed Cone Engine (ACE), on dose calculation with the TG-43 dose calculation formalism in patients with cervical carcinoma.

Materials And Methods: 20 patients of cervical carcinoma treated with a high dose rate of intracavitary brachytherapy were prospectively studied.

A 42-year-old man diagnosed with chondrosarcoma of the proximal femur underwent limb salvage by compartmental excision of the lesion and reconstruction with a custom-made hip prosthesis. The critical-size defect in the proximal femur was reconstructed with ceramic hemicylinders that were tied in place with sutures and augmented with two fibular strut grafts and an autologous cancellous iliac crest bone graft. A fourteen-year follow-up of the same case revealed that substituted ceramic matrices can be converted into dynamic, metabolically active, living bone.

Article Synopsis
  • * Most patients (81.8%) received medical management, with 66.7% being both smear and culture-negative, while 33.3% were only smear-positive, highlighting a correlation between smear positivity and a history of injury.
  • * The findings suggest that a high level of clinical suspicion, recognizing causative organisms, and starting empirical therapy with broad-spectrum antibiotics and antifungals can significantly improve patient outcomes, despite varying treatment protocols across different locations and practitioners.

The improper disposal of petroleum-based plastics has been associated with detrimental environmental consequences, such as the proliferation of microplastic pollution and increased emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Consequently, biopolymers have emerged as a highly regarded alternative due to their environmental-friendly attributes and versatile range of applications. In response to consumer demands for safer food options, sustainable packaging, and escalating environmental concerns, the food sector is increasingly adopting biopolymers.

Chirality is one of the hallmarks of biomolecules. Herein, we utilize heparin, a chiral biomolecule and potent drug, to induce chiral organization into the assembly of an achiral molecule. Polyanionic heparin binds with a dicationic perylenediimide derivative to induce supramolecular helical organization in aqueous medium as well as in a highly competitive cell culture medium.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to create a quick and accurate CRISPR-based test called RID-MyC for identifying fungal infections, specifically fungal keratitis, comparing it to traditional diagnostic methods.
  • - Conducted with 142 patients in South India, the RID-MyC assay uses advanced molecular techniques to amplify and detect fungal DNA, showing strong agreement with existing diagnostic approaches.
  • - Results demonstrated high sensitivity (93.27%) and specificity (89.47%) for diagnosing fungal keratitis, significantly reducing diagnostic time to about 50 minutes, highlighting its potential as an effective diagnostic tool.

Purpose: This study sought to identify the sources of differential performance and misclassification error among local (Indian) and external (non-Indian) corneal specialists in identifying bacterial and fungal keratitis based on corneal photography.

Methods: This study is a secondary analysis of survey data assessing the ability of corneal specialists to identify acute bacterial versus fungal keratitis by using corneal photography. One-hundred images of 100 eyes from 100 patients with acute bacterial or fungal keratitis in South India were previously presented to an international cohort of cornea specialists for interpretation over the span of April to July 2021.

Background: Literacy is an important factor that predicts cognitive performance. Existing cognitive screening tools are validated only in educated populations and are not appropriate for older adults with little or no education leading to poor performance on these tests and eventually leading to misdiagnosis. This challenge for clinicians necessitates a screening tool suitable for illiterate or low-literate older individuals.
