Background: The treatment of lung cancer depends on histological and/or cytological evaluation of the mediastinal lymph nodes. Endobronchial ultrasound/transbronchial needle aspiration-biopsy (EBUS/TBNA-TBNB) is the only minimally invasive technique for a diagnostic exploration of the mediastinum. The aim of this study is to analyze the reliability of EBUS in the preoperative staging of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Background: The diagnosis of active neoplastic disease was traditionally judged an absolute contraindication for extracorporeal membrane oxygenator (ECMO) because of the fear of tumor cells being scattered or seeded. The aim of this study is to compare the number of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) before and after surgery in patients receiving lung cancer resection with and without intraoperative ECMO support.

Methods: This is a prospective, non-randomized, two-arms observational study comparing the number of CTCs before and after surgery in patients receiving lung cancer resection with and without intraoperative ECMO support.

Open distance e-learning (ODeL) is an essential form of e-learning for students in South Africa. It allows expanded access to higher education for students from rural or socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. One of the key features of ODeL is that students can complete coursework modules virtually, without the need to step onto a physical university campus.

In potentially resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accurate mediastinal staging is crucial not only to offer the optimal management but also to avoid unnecessary surgery. Mediastinal staging is generally performed by the use of imaging techniques (computed tomography and positron emission tomography). However, the accuracy of radiological imaging in mediastinal staging is suboptimal.

Background: In the randomised, phase 3 equivalence trial on electron intraoperative radiotherapy (ELIOT), accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) with the use of intraoperative radiotherapy was associated with a higher rate of ipsilateral breast tumour recurrence (IBTR) than whole-breast irradiation (WBI) in patients with early-stage breast cancer. Here, we aimed to examine the planned long-term recurrence and survival outcomes from the ELIOT trial.

Methods: This single-centre, randomised, phase 3 equivalence trial was done at the European Institute of Oncology (Milan, Italy).

With the widespread availability of lung cancer screening programs, the number of small lung nodules requiring histological characterization has dramatically increased. Because computed tomography-guided fine-needle aspiration may frequently yield false-negative results, excisional biopsy using thoracoscopy is frequently required. Although thoracoscopic procedure has been known to be ideal for nodule resection, the identification of very small, subsolid and deep pulmonary nodules may still be challenging.

Objective: We report our experience with simultaneous localization and thoracoscopic removal for nonpalpable undiagnosed pulmonary nodules.

Methods: All patients with nonpalpable lesions requiring video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) wedge resection underwent localization of the targets and surgical removal in a hybrid operating room. Lesions were considered nonpalpable if they were small (<1 cm), deep (>1 cm from the surface), subsolid, or located within a dystrophic area.

The aim of this study is to compare the accuracy of Airgo™, a non-invasive wearable device that records breath, with respect to a gold standard. In 21 healthy subjects (10 males, 11 females), four parameters were recorded for four min at rest and in different positions simultaneously by Airgo™ and SensorMedics 2900 metabolic cart. Then, a cardio-pulmonary exercise test was performed using the Erg 800S cycle ergometer in order to test Airgo™'s accuracy during physical effort.

To analyze treatment and survival in a series of resected patients with primary or recurrent retroperitoneal sarcoma (RPS) treated and prospectively followed at a single institution. Between July 1994 and December 2015, 89 patients (36 M, 53 F; mean age 60 years, range 25-79) were evaluated. For the purpose of analysis, complete resection was defined as removal of gross tumor with histologically confirmed clear resection margins.

Background: The Glasgow prognostic score (GPS) is an inflammation-based score based on albuminemia and C-reactive protein concentration proved to be associated with cancer-specific survival in several neoplasms. The present study explored the immediate postoperative value of the GPS for patients undergoing pneumonectomy for lung cancer.

Methods: The value of the GPS preoperatively was studied in 250 patients undergoing pneumonectomy for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Objective: We performed a prospective, randomized clinical study to assess whether prophylactic treatment with metoprolol or losartan, initiated soon after lung cancer surgery in patients with elevated N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels, reduces the incidence of postoperative atrial fibrillation.

Background: Postoperative atrial fibrillation is a well recognized complication after lung cancer surgery, with an incidence as high as 30%. Perioperative increase of NT-proBNP has been demonstrated to be a strong independent predictor of postoperative atrial fibrillation in this setting.

The goal of this study is to examine workflow and information flow in the emergency department (ED) digital imaging process to identify features of an optimized system. Radiological imaging (x-rays, CT scans, etc) is unique in the ED setting, as the need for fast turn-around time and interactive communication between radiologists and emergency physicians is different than that of most other healthcare settings. The information technology systems which are used by both radiologists and emergency physicians to support these processes have been designed with a focus on the routine workflow of radiologists.
