Heritability of explosive power and anaerobic capacity in humans.

There is a disparity in the information about the heritability of the response of muscle anaerobic metabolism to exercise and the use of explosive power, as well as a lack of information concerning the genetic determinants of this form of work, as measured using different specific physical tests. We applied a battery of some of the commonly employed procedures (Ergojump, Wingate, maximal accumulated oxygen deficit, excess post-exercise oxygen consumption, and delta lactate concentration) to a group of 32 Caucasian male twins, 8 monozygotic and 8 dizygotic pairs, who had similar environmental backgrounds. Results were studied using a heritability index (HI).

Clinical outcome following neuroleptic discontinuation in patients with remitted recent-onset schizophrenia.

Objective: The goal of this report was to examine the clinical course following neuroleptic discontinuation of patients with recent-onset schizophrenia who had been receiving maintenance antipsychotic treatment for at least 1 year.

Method: Fifty-three volunteer patients with recent-onset schizophrenia who had been clinically stabilized on a maintenance regimen of fluphenazine decanoate for a mean of 16.7 months had their antipsychotic medications withdrawn under clinical supervision.

[Management of epistaxis in Rendu-Osler-Weber disease].

The Rendu-Osler-Weber disease is an hereditary hemorrhagic dysfunction with muco-cutaneous telangiectasia of diverse localization, being able to internal organs and committing the life in some cases, not alone for the derived systemic complications, but for the quantity of the recurrent nosebleed that are the most frequent feature and sometimes restrictive that these patients present. We report two family groups with multidisciplinary diagnosis, and analyze them most important ENT aspects for this syndrome.

Activation of p38MAPK by TGF-beta in fetal rat hepatocytes requires radical oxygen production, but is dispensable for cell death.

We have previously found that transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) induces an increase in radical oxygen species (ROS) production that mediates its apoptotic effects in fetal hepatocytes. In this paper we show that TGF-beta activates p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38MAPK) and ROS may be responsible for this activation. Activation of p38MAPK occurs late, coincident with the maximal production of ROS, it is inhibited by radical scavengers and it is accentuated by the presence of glutathione synthesis inhibitors.

Factors affecting reliability and confidence of DSM-III-R psychosis-related diagnosis.

The relationships between interrater diagnostic reliability, confidence in diagnosis, DSM-III-R criteria ambiguity and case report data quality were examined in 20 case vignettes describing psychosis-related symptomatology. Each of seven diagnosticians made DSM-III-R diagnoses and gave confidence ratings for those diagnoses, as well as ratings on quality of data presented and clarity of diagnostic criteria for each vignette. As hypothesized, confidence ratings significantly predicted interrater diagnostic agreement.

Multiples theories try to explain the acquired etiology of this entity, attributing its origin to a disfunction of pharynx-esophageal sphincter. A case of total larynguectomy with hypopharyngeal diverticulum and progressive dysphagia to solid food is presented.

Symptom dimensions in recent-onset schizophrenia and mania: a principal components analysis of the 24-item Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale.

Previous four- and five-factor solutions of the 18-item Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) suggested the possibility of an affective dimension in psychosis. A principal components analysis was used to analyze psychiatric symptom data rated on an expanded 24-item version of the BPRS. BPRS data were collected during a period of acute psychotic and affective illness with 114 young adult, recent-onset schizophrenia and schizoaffective patients and 27 bipolar manic patients.

Concurrent validity of negative symptom assessments in treatment refractory schizophrenia: relationship between interview-based ratings and inpatient ward observations.

The concurrent validity of interview-based ratings of negative symptoms in 35 inpatients with chronic, treatment refractory schizophrenia was evaluated. Correlations were examined between interview-based ratings of negative symptoms, measured by the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, and the naturalistic behavior of inpatients as assessed by the Time Sample Behavior Checklist. Higher levels of interview-based negative symptoms were related to reduced interpersonal activity on the inpatient ward, but not to entertainment, instrumental or self-maintenance activities.

p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase mediates tumor necrosis factor-alpha-induced apoptosis in rat fetal brown adipocytes.

Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFalpha) induces apoptosis and cell growth inhibition in primary rat fetal brown adipocytes. Here, we examine the role played by some members of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) superfamily. TNFalpha activates extracellular regulated kinase-1/2 (ERK1/2) and p38MAPK.

Elevated levels of cognitive-perceptual deficits in individuals with a family history of schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

This study finds that the relatives of schizophrenics have elevated scores on the cognitive-perceptual factor of the schizotypal personality questionnaire (SPQ), particularly for the 'unusual perceptual experiences' and 'ideas of reference' subscales. These results support recent findings by Kremen et al. (1998) and suggest that previous failures to demonstrate elevated scores on 'positive' symptoms of schizotypy may be a function of instrumentation.

A comparison of psychiatric symptoms between Anglo-Americans and Mexican-Americans with schizophrenia.

Culture is widely thought to influence the form, content, and extent of symptoms experienced and expressed by the mentally ill. However, little is known about how specific cultural groups differ in their symptomatic presentation of mental illness. Using data derived from the Present State Exam, the current study compared 63 Anglo-American and 53 Mexican-American patients with schizophrenia on ten psychiatric symptoms.

A short training programme for the rapid improvement of both aerobic and anaerobic metabolism.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in aerobic and anaerobic metabolism produced by a newly devised short training programme. Five young male volunteers trained daily for 2 weeks on a cycle ergometer. Sessions consisted of 15-s all-out repetitions with 45-s rest periods, plus 30-s all-out repetitions with 12-min rest periods.

Objective: With the ultimate goal of finding a straightforward protocol for acclimatization at simulated altitude, we evaluated the early effects of repeated short-term exposure to hypobaric hypoxia on the respiratory response to exercise in hypoxia.

Methods: Nine subjects were exposed to a simulated altitude of 5000 m for 2 hours a day for 14 days. Arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2), expired volume per minute (VE), respiratory rate, tidal volume (VT), and heart rate were measured during rest and during exercise (cycloergometer, at 30% of maximum oxygen consumption at sea level), both in normoxia and at 5000 m of simulated altitude on the first and 15th days.

Seasonal variations of blood pressure and overhydration in patients on chronic hemodialysis.

Blood pressure (BP) has a seasonal cycle in the general population and in patients undergoing maintenance dialysis, but the causes remain unclear. We studied the BP measurements recorded at fixed hours three times weekly from 1994 to 1997 in 102 hemodialysis patients. We obtained monthly averages of the following variables: predialysis mean BP, greatest overhydration (OH) estimated by predialysis body weight excess over dry weight, chronic OH estimated by the remaining postdialysis weight excess over dry weight, urea reduction ratio (URR) in dialysis, and monthly means for daylight span and outdoor temperature over the study period.

Life events can trigger depressive exacerbation in the early course of schizophrenia.

Previous studies have linked life events with depression in chronic schizophrenia, but those studies had methodological limitations.
