Traumatic bilateral Achilles tendon rupture in a young athlete treated with percutaneous tenorrhaphy.

While rupture of the Achilles tendon is one of the most frequent injuries sustained in sports and physical activity, bilateral Achilles tendon rupture is uncommon. We present the case of a 33-year-old man who sustained a bilateral Achilles tendon rupture in the absence of predisposing factors. The lesions were managed by percutaneous tenorrhaphy and casting.

Sterilization of corticosteroids for ocular and pulmonary delivery with supercritical carbon dioxide.

Glucocorticosteroids, a class of drugs widely used in the treatment of allergies, airways inflammation and inflammatory ocular diseases, are often difficult to sterilize due to their inherent sensibility to heat or irradiation induced degradation. Being often in form of suspension, obviously the final medicinal product cannot be sterilized by filtration. The effectiveness of supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) based method for the sterilization of food and biomedical materials is well documented in the literature.

[Prevention and treatment of decubitus ulcers: an experience].

We analyze how pressure sores influence hospital stay. In the first part, the risk factors are pointed out; we define the aims and nursing actions to prevent the phenomena. The Authors present their assessment kardex along with the protocols related to different stages of the sore.

[Ledderhose's disease].

The authors describe the clinical appearance of Ledderhose disease and emphasize the association with Dupuytren disease. They report on a series of patients treated at the 2nd Orthopedic Unit of University of Florence and describe the operating technique used. They believe that the procedure of removal of nodules must always be performed in association with careful exeresis of normal tissue, employing total aponeurectomy only in revision surgery.

Stereochemistry of viminol, a novel central analgesic.

The synthesis of the stereoisomers of the centrally acting analgesic 1-[1-(2-chlorobenzyl)-pyrrol-2-yl]-2-di-sec.-butylamino-ethanol (viminol) is described. Their absolute configuration has been shown by comparing the circular dichroism (CD) curves with those of some phenyl analogs: for one of the viminol stereoisomers the postulated configurational assignment has been recently confirmed by an X-ray analysis.
