: Hormonal, vascular, and behavioral changes during pregnancy can negatively impact a woman's oral health, resulting in conditions such as gingivitis, dental sensitivity, and caries. Although oral health is critical during pregnancy, it remains frequently overlooked. In this study, the oral health status and hygiene practices of pregnant women attending two university hospitals in southern Italy were evaluated.

Background: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a major cause of sepsis and meningitis in newborns. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends to pregnant women, between 35 and 37 weeks of gestation, universal vaginal-rectal screening for GBS colonization, aimed at intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis (IAP). The latter is the only currently available and highly effective method against early onset GBS neonatal infections.

Article Synopsis
  • Endometriosis-related infertility is a widely discussed issue in reproductive medicine, particularly concerning how hormonal treatments can impact assisted reproduction technologies (ART) success rates for these patients.
  • Recent research highlights several medications, such as GnRH agonists and progestins, with mixed results and concerns over study biases.
  • Current findings indicate GnRH agonists may help stage III/IV endometriosis patients, while progestin-based protocols show similar effectiveness; aromatase inhibitors seem to have limited value, especially for those who haven't succeeded in ART before.

Introduction: Several studies have shown that late- and post-term pregnancies are associated with an increased risk of perinatal morbidity and mortality. In this case, induction of labor is the recommended approach. For full-term pregnancies, various methods exist to prepare the cervix and/or commence labor.

Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze the impact of thyroid autoimmunity (TAI) on reproductive outcome parameters of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycles as compared to TAI-negative ICSI cycles.

Design: In this single in vitro fertilization (IVF) center retrospective study, 86 infertile women with elevated thyroid peroxidase or TGAb levels, but euthyroid after thyroxine replacement (study group), were compared to 69 female patients with no thyroid abnormalities (controls). Following ICSI treatment fertilization rate (FR), clinical pregnancy rate (CPR), miscarriage rate (MR), and live birth rate (LBR) were analyzed.

Article Synopsis
  • Wernicke Encephalopathy (WE) is a serious neurological condition linked to vitamin B1 deficiency, often seen in chronic alcoholics and can occur in pregnant women with hyperemesis gravidarum due to increased thiamine demand.
  • A case study of a 33-year-old diabetic patient at 12 weeks of pregnancy showed WE symptoms, including confusion and impaired vision, diagnosed through MRI; treatment with thiamine led to significant recovery, although some neurological issues persisted long-term.
  • Despite favorable prognosis when treated early, about 80% of WE patients have memory loss and 35% experience gait disorders; the need for ongoing follow-up and caution in management highlights gaps in established

Objectives: Luteinizing hormone (LH) plays a key role in normal follicular development and oocyte maturation in controlled ovarian stimulation. LH stimulates the proliferation and differentiation of theca cells for the secretion of androgens, synergistically increasing estrogen production. This study aimed to investigate the effects of low LH concentrations on oocyte retrieval, fertilization, and embryo development in patients undergoing in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection.

Adenomyosis, characterized by the growth of endometrial tissue within the uterine wall, poses significant challenges in treatment. The literature primarily focuses on managing abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) and dysmenorrhea, the main symptoms of adenomyosis. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and tranexamic acid provide limited support for mild symptoms or symptom re-exacerbation during hormone therapy.

Maternal immunization is considered the best intervention in order to prevent influenza infection of pregnant women and influenza and pertussis infection of newborns. Despite the existing recommendations, vaccination coverage rates in Italy remain very low. Starting from August 2018, maternal immunization against influenza and diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis were strongly recommended by the Italian Ministry of Health.

We report a case of Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome (FHCS) 1 week after an urgent cesarean section. Although its onset in the postpartum period is poorly reported in the literature, we suggest that FHCS can complicate puerperal endometritis; therefore, it should be consider in differential diagnosis in puerpera with right upper quadrant pain. Again, it can be useful to perform a contrast computed tomography that allows early diagnosis and conservative treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how premature androgen exposure affects the likelihood of developing polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in girls with premature pubarche (PP).
  • Among the 99 girls analyzed, those with PP demonstrated a 64% rate of PCOS, along with higher body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, testosterone levels, and familial history of diabetes compared to those without PCOS.
  • Key predictive factors for PCOS identified include waist circumference, insulin sensitivity, lipid profiles, and total testosterone, pointing to significant metabolic issues linked to the disorder.

Picophytoplankton (PicoP) are increasingly recognized as significant contributors to primary productivity and phytoplankton biomass in coastal and estuarine systems. Remarkably though, PicoP composition is unknown or not well-resolved in several large estuaries including the semi-lagoonal Neuse River Estuary (NRE), a tributary of the second largest estuary-system in the lower USA, the Pamlico-Albemarle Sound. The NRE is impacted by extreme weather events, including recent increases in precipitation and flooding associated with tropical cyclones.

Background: Syndromic congenital heart disease accounts for 30% of cases and can be determined by genetic, environmental or multifactorial causes. In many cases the etiology remains uncertain. Many known genes are responsible for specific morphopathogenetic mechanisms during the development of the heart whose alteration can determine specific phenotypes of cardiac malformations.

Several investigators performing bone marrow transplantation studies have previously reported sporadic increases in mortality that were associated with pronounced swelling in the face, head and neck of mice. Over the past few years, we and others have noted an increasing number of experiments in which mice that have received total-body irradiation (TBI) or partial-body irradiation (PBI) develop swollen muzzles, drastic thickening of the upper lip and redness, bruising and/or swelling around the nose and muzzle and sometimes over the top of the head. We refer to this rapid and extreme swelling after irradiation as swollen muzzle syndrome (SMS).

Cognitive reserve may mitigate the degree of cognitive deficit observed in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), confounding attempts to fully characterize the nature of these deficits. In this study, cognitive reserve was examined as a potential moderator of neurocognitive deficits in MDD. Unmedicated, currently depressed patients with MDD (n = 269), and healthy volunteers (n = 143) were compared on measures assessing psychomotor speed, interference processing, verbal memory, visual memory, and executive functioning.

Purpose: In recent years, a large variety of medical devices has become available. Every device must be efficient, safe and cost effective, but it is not enough to use it properly without considering the environment in which it will be employed. We applied this kind of analysis to subcutaneously anchored sutureless devices (SAS).

Introduction: The presence of antibiotic resistance genes in endodontic microorganisms might render the infection resistant to common antibiotics. The aims of this project were to identify selected antibiotic resistance genes in primary and persistent endodontic infections and to determine the effectiveness of contemporary endodontic procedures in eliminating bacteria with these genes.

Methods: In patients undergoing primary endodontic treatment or retreatment, the root canals were aseptically accessed and sampled before endodontic procedures as well as after contemporary chemomechanical preparation and medication with calcium hydroxide.
