Herein we study long-term changes in global sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a concentration (CHL) in order to evaluate possible effects of climate change on the global marine ecosystems. Our approach is to analyze multi-model ensemble-means from global numerical-simulations available through the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6). A 250-year span consisting of the 1850-2014 historical period and the 2015-2099 climate-change projection was considered, where the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) 2.

Conservation planning for retention, not just protection.

Most protected area (PA) planning aims to improve biota representation within the PA system, but this does not necessarily achieve the best outcomes for biota retention across regions when we also consider habitat loss in areas outside the PA system. Here, we assess the implications that different PA expansion strategies can have on the retention of species habitat across an entire region. Using retention of forest habitat for Colombia's 550 forest-dependent bird species as our outcome variable, we found that when a minimum of 30% of each species' habitat was included in the PA system, a pattern of PA expansion targeting areas at highest deforestation risk (risk-prevention) led to the retention, on average, of 7.

The chiral-induced spin selectivity effect (CISS) is a breakthrough phenomenon that has revolutionized the field of electrocatalysis. We report the first study on the electron spin-dependent electrocatalysis for the oxygen reduction reaction, ORR, using iron phthalocyanine, FePc, a well-known molecular catalyst for this reaction. The FePc complex belongs to the non-precious catalysts group, whose active site, FeN4, emulates catalytic centers of biocatalysts such as Cytochrome c.

Lymphoepithelioma-Like Carcinoma of the Breast: A Case Report of a Rare Type of Invasive Carcinoma.

Lymphoepithelioma carcinoma (LELC) is an extremely rare type of mammary cancer. Based on the histology, it can be misdiagnosed with inflammatory lesions like mastitis and medullary carcinoma or other hematopoietic neoplasms like lymphoma in the breast. Since LELC has a good response to chemotherapy with a good prognosis, t is prognostically important to recognize LELC.

Agroindustrial wastes are a cheap and abundant source of natural fibers and macromolecules that can be used in the manufacturing of biocomposites. This study presents the development and thermo-mechanical characterization of a bio-composite film (TPF/PF), made of thermoplastic banana flour (TPF) matrix and plantain fibers (PF). Fabricated materials were characterized by physical analysis, chemical composition, Fourier-transformed spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal analysis (TGA), mechanical analysis, and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM).

A surprising complication of breast augmentation surgery.

Infections caused by opportunistic fungal organisms such as spp have been increasingly recognized over the last few decades. Most affected patients are immunocompromised or critically ill, but spp infections have also been described in immunocompetent patients, such as localized disease from direct inoculation or in near-drowning events. We describe a case of a patient with no known underlying immune impairment who experienced significant infection with at both sites of breast augmentation.

Sea Turtles in the Cancer Risk Landscape: A Global Meta-Analysis of Fibropapillomatosis Prevalence and Associated Risk Factors.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma Arising in Breast Implant Capsules.

Breast augmentation and reconstruction utilizing implants are among the most common plastic surgery procedures performed in the United States. A small proportion of these implants are removed each year. We report 2 cases where routine pathologic evaluation of capsulectomy specimens revealed squamous cell carcinoma associated with the breast implant capsule and discuss the possible pathogenesis of this unusual entity.

Diagnostic Delays in Metastatic Amelanotic Melanoma Presenting as Breast Pain.

Nonlinear dynamics of coupled transverse-rotational waves in granular chains.

The nonlinear dynamics of coupled waves in one-dimensional granular chains with and without a substrate is theoretically studied accounting for quadratic nonlinearity. The multiple time scale method is used to derive the nonlinear dispersion relations for infinite granular chains and to obtain the wave solutions for semi-infinite systems. It is shown that the sum frequency and difference frequency components of the coupled transverse-rotational waves are generated due to their nonlinear interactions with the longitudinal wave.

The Rarity of Depth Refugia from Coral Bleaching Heat Stress in the Western and Central Pacific Islands.

Some researchers have suggested that corals living in deeper reefs may escape heat stress experienced by shallow corals. We evaluated the potential of deep coral reef refugia from bleaching stress by leveraging a long record of satellite-derived sea surface temperature data with a temporal, spatial, and depth precision of in situ temperature records. We calculated an in situ stress metric using a depth bias-adjusted threshold for 457 coral reef sites among 49 islands in the western and central Pacific Ocean over the period 2001-2017.

Analytical modeling of dissipative silencers.

This paper applies ideas originally developed in the field of acoustics of multiscale porous media to the analytical modeling of dissipative silencers. Analytical models for the long-wavelength acoustical properties of different types of dissipative silencers, such as pod silencers, lined ducts, splitters, and bar silencers, are introduced in this work. Comparison of the catalytic activity for O reduction of Fe and Co MN4 adsorbed on graphite electrodes and on carbon nanotubes.

We have compared the electrocatalytic activity of several substituted and unsubstituted Co and Fe N4-macrocyclic complexes (MN4) for the electro-reduction of oxygen with the complexes directly adsorbed on the edge plane of pyrolytic graphite or adsorbed on carbon nanotubes (CNTs). In the presence of CNTs, one order of magnitude higher surface concentrations of MN4 catalysts per geometric area unit could be adsorbed leading to a lower overpotential for the oxygen electro-reduction and activities in the same order of magnitude as the commercially available Pt/C catalysts in basic pH. From Koutecky-Levich regression analysis, the total number of electrons transferred was approximately 2 for all the Co complexes and 4 for all the Fe ones, both in the presence and in the absence of the carbon nanotubes.
