Evaluation of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition and Ki-67 index in aggressive papillary thyroid cancer.

Objectives: The present study aims to characterize immunohistochemical features of markers associated with Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) and proliferative activity that could lead to death in Papillary Thyroid Cancer (PTC).

Methods: Clinical data and tumor material were retrospectively collected. The patients were separated into death from PTC (Group 1), metastatic cases with indolent behavior (Group 2) and non-metastatic indolent PTC (Group 3).

Prognostic significance of microsatellite instability in patients with resectable gastric cancer.

Background: Microsatellite instability (MSI) gastric cancer (GC) generally has a better prognosis than microsatellite-stable (MSS) GC and has been associated with nonsurvival benefit with the addition of chemotherapy (CMT) compared with surgery alone. However, patients with MSI have distinct clinicopathological characteristics. This study aimed to compare the survival outcomes between patients with MSI GC and those with MSS GC.

Nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells gene expression involvement in porcine liver transplant experimental model.

Purpose: Gene expressions of vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Alpha (VEGFa), Nuclear Factor Kappa-Light-Chain-Enhancer of Activated B cells (NFkB) and cytokines could be useful for identifying potential therapeutic targets to alleviate ischemia-reperfusion injury after liver transplantation. Cytokine gene expressions, VEGFa and NFkB were investigated in a preclinical swine model of liver transplantation.

Methods: A total of 12 pigs were used as donors and recipients in liver transplantation without venovenous bypass or aortic clamping.

Identification of Predictors of Metastatic Potential in Paragangliomas to Develop a Prognostic Score (PSPGL).

Context: Paragangliomas (PGLs) are rare tumors in adrenal and extra-adrenal locations. Metastasis are found in approximately 5% to 35% of PGLs, and there are no reliable predictors of metastatic disease.

Objective: This work aimed to develop a prognostic score of metastatic potential in PGLs.

Background: Anti-programmed death-1/programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-1/PD-L1) immunotherapy has demonstrated promising results on gastric cancer (GC). However, PD-L1 can express differently between metastatic sites and primary tumors (PT).

Aim: To compare PD-L1 status in PT and matched lymph node metastases (LNM) of GC patients and to determine the correlation between the PD-L1 status and clinicopathological characteristics.

Prognostic implications of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes within the tumor microenvironment in gastric cancer.

Background: Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) play a regulatory role in the tumor-associated immune response and are important in the prognosis and treatment response of several cancers. However, because of its heterogeneity, the prognostic value of TILs in gastric cancer (GC) is still controversial. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the association between the density of TILs and patients' outcomes in GC.

Treatment Outcomes in Patients with Advanced Fibrolamellar Hepatocellular Carcinoma Under Systemic Treatment: Analysis of Clinical Characteristics, Management, and Radiomics.

Purpose: Fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma (FLHCC) is a rare primary liver malignancy often diagnosed at advanced stages. While there are limited data on the efficacy of specific agents, we aim to report outcomes of patients treated with systemic therapies and explore prognostic factors.

Intrahepatic biliary proliferations represent a spectrum from reactive (ductular reaction, some with atypical architecture), hamartomatous (von Meyenburg complex), benign (bile duct adenoma) and precursor/borderline entities (biliary intraepithelial neoplasia, intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct) to fully malignant (cholangiocarcinoma) neoplasms.

Clinical Aspects and Etiologic Investigation of Pediatric Patients With Acute Liver Failure.

A new outbreak of hepatitis of unknown origin raised awareness in the international community. A few reports have attempted to associate new cases with adenovirus infection and the immunologic effects of previous SARS-CoV-2 infections through a superantigen mechanism. Moreover, according to a case series, viral isolates were identified in 7 of 10 cases of pediatric patients with hepatitis of unknown origin and acute liver failure.

Implementation of an organized colorectal cancer screening program through quantitative fecal immunochemical test followed by colonoscopy in an urban low-income community: Guidance and strategies.

Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) followed by a colonoscopy is an efficacious strategy to improve the adenoma detection rate and Colorectal Cancer (CRC). There is no organized national screening program for CRC in Brazil. The aim of this research was to describe the implementation of an organized screening program for CRC through FIT followed by colonoscopy, in an urban low-income community of São Paulo city.

P53 and VEGF are promising biomarkers for sorafenib efficacy in an experimental model of NASH-related HCC.

The efficacy of systemic therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) related to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is poorly understood. In this study we evaluated the effects of sorafenib based on the expression of molecular markers related to major hepatocarcinogenesis pathways and angiogenesis in a NASH-related HCC model. Forty male rats were submitted to NASH-HCC induction through the combination of a high-fat and choline deficient diet and diethylnitrosamine (100 mg/L) administration in the drinking water for 13 and 16 weeks.

Postmortem Brains from Subjects with Diabetes Mellitus Display Reduced GLUT4 Expression and Soma Area in Hippocampal Neurons: Potential Involvement of Inflammation.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is an important risk factor for dementia, which is a common neurodegenerative disorder. DM is known to activate inflammation, oxidative stress, and advanced glycation end products (AGEs) generation, all capable of inducing neuronal dysfunctions, thus participating in the neurodegeneration progress. In that process, disturbed neuronal glucose supply plays a key role, which in hippocampal neurons is controlled by the insulin-sensitive glucose transporter type 4 (GLUT4).

Liver elastography can predict degree of advanced fibrosis for autoimmune hepatitis in biochemical remission.

Background And Aim: The aim was to analyze the concordance of liver stiffness measurement (LSM) either by transient elastography (TE) or ARFI with liver biopsy in autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) patients with biochemical remission and to identify those with histological remission. Liver biopsy is still the golden standard for AIH diagnosis. However, it is an invasive procedure and these patients, most of the time, require many biopsies, so it would be valuable to search for noninvasive method that could select all these patients and keep under observation.

Adjuvant Vaccination with Allogenic Dendritic Cells Significantly Prolongs Overall Survival in High-Grade Gliomas: Results of a Phase II Trial.

Immunotherapy for cancer treatment has gained increased attention in recent years. Recently, our group reported the case of a patient with glioblastoma who underwent vaccination based on dendritic cells and experienced a strong Th1 immune response together with near-complete tumor remission. Here we report the results of a phase I/II prospective, non-controlled clinical trial with 37 patients harboring glioblastoma or grade 4 astrocytomas.

Profile of MicroRNAs Associated with Death Due to Disease Progression in Metastatic Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma Patients.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common neoplasm of the endocrine system and has an excellent long-term prognosis, with low rates of distant metastatic disease. Although infrequent, there are cases of deaths directly related to PTC, especially in patients with metastatic disease, and the factors that could be associated with this unfavorable outcome remain a major challenge in clinical practice. Recently, research into genetic factors associated with PTC has gained ground, especially mutations in the TERT promoter and BRAF gene.

Prognostic implications of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes in association with programmed cell death ligand 1 expression in remnant gastric cancer.

Objective: Remnant gastric cancer (RGC) is usually associated with a worse prognosis. As they are less common and very heterogeneous tumors, new prognostic and reliable determinants are required to predict patients' clinical course for RGC. This study aimed to investigate the tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) status as prognostic biomarkers in a cohort of patients with RGC to develop an immune-related score.

Liver disease accompanied by enteropathy in common variable immunodeficiency: Common pathophysiological mechanisms.

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is one of the inborn errors of immunity that have the greatest clinical impact. Rates of morbidity and mortality are higher in patients with CVID who develop liver disease than in those who do not. The main liver disorder in CVID is nodular regenerative hyperplasia (NRH), the cause of which remains unclear and for which there is as yet no treatment.

Phylogeographic patterns of the yellow fever virus around the metropolitan region of São Paulo, Brazil, 2016-2019.

From 2016 to 2019, the largest outbreak caused by the Yellow Fever virus (YFV) in the 21st century in the Americas occurred in southeastern Brazil. A sylvatic cycle of transmission was reported near densely populated areas, such as the large metropolitan area of the city of São Paulo. Here, we describe the origin, spread, and movement of the YFV throughout the state of São Paulo.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD): screening, treatment and survival analysis in a Brazilian series.

Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical features, Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) screening, treatment modalities, and Overall Survival (OS) in a series of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease-Related Hepatocellular Carcinoma (NAFLD-HCC) Brazilian patients.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study at the Instituto do Cancer do Estado de São Paulo, at the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo with the approval of the local research ethics committee. NAFLD patients with HCC diagnosed, from May 2010 to May 2019, were included.

Association between Metabolic Disorders and Cholangiocarcinoma: Impact of a Postulated Risk Factor with Rising Incidence.

Introduction and objectives: The incidence of cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) has been increasing globally. Although a concomitant increase in the incidence of metabolic disorders might suggest a causal relationship, the data are scarce. We aimed to describe the prevalence of metabolic disorders in patients with CCA and report the clinical features and outcomes.

African genetic ancestry is associated with lower frequency of PNPLA3 G allele in non-alcoholic fatty liver in an admixed population.

Introduction And Objectives: PNPLA3 (rs738409) and TM6SF2 (rs58542926) variants, interindividual and ethnic differences may be risk factors for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The PNPLA3 G allele is associated with worse NAFLD evolution in Hispanics and Caucasians. TM6SF2 is associated with hypertriglyceridemia, NAFLD, and cardiovascular disease.
