Rapid movement is rare in the plant kingdom, but a prerequisite for ballistic seed dispersal. A particularly dramatic example of rapid motion in plants is the squirting cucumber () which launches its seeds explosively via a high-pressure jet. Despite intriguing scientists for centuries, the exact mechanism of seed dispersal and its effect on subsequent generations remain poorly understood.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA snap-through bifurcation occurs when a bistable structure loses one of its stable states and moves rapidly to the remaining state. For example, a buckled arch with symmetrically clamped ends can snap between an inverted and a natural state as the ends are released. A standard linear stability analysis suggests that the arch becomes unstable to asymmetric perturbations.

In this case, the body of the inverted appendage can obstruct the mitral valve leading to severe complications. The mechanisms are still poorly known, and more specific studies are needed to better understand its causes and identify mitigating strategies.

The role of the patient specific morphology and pathological haemodynamics on the risk of ischemia remains unclear.
Methods: This work performs a comparative assessment of the hemodynamic parameters among patient-specific LAA morphologies through fluid-structure interaction computational analyses.
Color centers in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) have been emerging as a multifunctional platform for various optical applications including quantum information processing, quantum computing and imaging. Simultaneously, due to its biocompatibility and biodegradability hBN is a promising material for biomedical applications. In this work, we demonstrate single-photon emission from hBN color centers embedded inside live cells and their application to cellular barcoding.

The buckling modes are controlled by the bending stiffness of the sheet, the density of the substrate, and the size and the spatially dependent elastic coefficients of the sheet. We solve the beam equation describing the mechanical equilibrium of a sheet when its bending stiffness varies parallel to the direction of confinement.

Background: The Flexible Adaptive Algorithmic Surveillance Testing (FAAST) program represents an innovative approach for improving the detection of new cases of infectious disease; it is deployed here to screen and diagnose SARS-CoV-2. With the advent of treatment for COVID-19, finding individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 is an urgent clinical and public health priority. While these kinds of Bayesian search algorithms are used widely in other settings (eg, to find downed aircraft, in submarine recovery, and to aid in oil exploration), this is the first time that Bayesian adaptive approaches have been used for active disease surveillance in the field.

Both pendant and sessile droplets display the formation of an encapsulating elastic film as the bulk concentration of solute reaches a critical value during evaporation, but the morphology of the droplet varies significantly: for sessile droplets, the elastic film ultimately crumples in a nearly flattened area close to the apex while in pendant droplets, circumferential wrinkling occurs close to the contact line. These different morphologies are understood through a gravito-elastocapillary model that predicts the droplet morphology and the onset of shape changes, as well as showing that the influence of the direction of gravity remains crucial even for very small droplets (where the effect of gravity can normally be neglected).

Everyday experience confirms the tendency of adhesive films to detach from spheroidal regions of rigid substrates-what is a petty frustration when placing a sticky band aid onto a knee is a more serious matter in the coating and painting industries. Irrespective of their resistance to bending, a key driver of such phenomena is Gauss' , which implies that naturally flat sheets cannot conform to doubly curved surfaces without developing a strain whose magnitude grows sharply with the curved area. Previous attempts to characterize the onset of curvature-induced delamination, and the complex patterns it gives rise to, assumed a dewetting-like mechanism in which the propensity of two materials to form contact through interfacial energy is modified by an elastic energy penalty.

CKD poses a particularly heavy burden in low- and middle-income countries, which are least able to cope with its consequences. It has become one of the leading causes of death worldwide and is one of the few non-communicable diseases where the number of related deaths has increased over the last two decades.

A number of techniques are currently used, such as Yacoub's remodelling and David's reimplantation, based on a regular straight conduit. More recently, the De Paulis proposed the use of bulging conduits to reconstruct the shape of the Valsalva sinuses.

Millions of years of evolution have allowed animals to develop unusual locomotion capabilities. A striking example is the legless-jumping of click beetles and trap-jaw ants, which jump more than 10 times their body length. Their delicate musculoskeletal system amplifies their muscles' power.

The study of cavitation bubble dynamics plays a crucial role in understanding and utilizing such phenomena for practical applications and purposes. Since the lifetime of cavitation bubbles is in the range of hundreds of microseconds and the radii are in the millimeter range, the observation of bubble dynamics requires complicated and expensive equipment.

The purpose is to understand the dynamics behind the most common clinical practice to better define the salient features that may contribute to the efficiency of the process.
Study Design/materials And Methods: Temperature changes of hair samples (dark brown color) from a human scalp (skin type Fitpatrick II) were measured by a thermal camera following irradiation with single and multiple neodymium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) (1064 nm) and alexandrite (755 nm) laser pulses.
The discovery of new hits through ligand-based virtual screening in drug discovery is essentially a low-data problem, as data acquisition is both difficult and expensive. The requirement for large amounts of training data hinders the application of conventional machine learning techniques to this problem domain. This work explores few-shot machine learning for hit discovery and lead optimization.

Background And Purpose: Prioritizing a drug therapy problem (DTP) during an experiential placement is challenging for some pharmacy students, suggesting a gap in pre-placement preparedness and the need to modify existing resources. A modified DTP prioritizing framework is proposed to enhance clinical reasoning and increase students' confidence in performing this important step in the pharmaceutical care process.
Educational Activity And Setting: Students' baseline DTP prioritizing capability was assessed in an informal focus group consisting of pharmacy students and experienced hospital pharmacy preceptors.
The shape of a liquid-air interface advancing on a heterogeneous surface was studied experimentally, together with the force induced by the pinning of the contact line to surface defects. Different surfaces were considered with circular defects introduced as arrays of cocoa butter patches or small circular holes. These heterogeneous surfaces were submerged in aqueous ethanol solutions while measuring the additional force arising from the deformation of the advancing contact line and characterizing the interface shape and its pinning on the defects.

Hypothesis: 'Bridge splitting' is considered in the case of capillary adhesion: a fixed total volume of liquid is split into multiple capillary bridges. Previous studies have shown that bridge splitting only enhances the capillary-induced adhesion force between two planar surfaces in specific circumstances. We hypothesise that bridge splitting significantly enhances the total adhesion force between rough surfaces, since mobile wetting bridges can naturally migrate to narrower gaps.
