Music Training and Education Slow the Deterioration of Music Perception Produced by Presbycusis in the Elderly.

The perception of music depends on the normal function of the peripheral and central auditory system. Aged subjects without hearing loss have altered music perception, including pitch and temporal features. Presbycusis or age-related hearing loss is a frequent condition in elderly people, produced by neurodegenerative processes that affect the cochlear receptor cells and brain circuits involved in auditory perception.

Comparison of four recombinant hepatitis B vaccines applied on an accelerated schedule in healthy adults.

Background: In the present study, we evaluated the safety of CIGB-230, a novel vaccine candidate based on the mixture of a plasmid for DNA immunization, expressing hepatitis C virus (HCV) structural antigens, with a recombinant HCV Core protein.

Methods: Fifteen HCV chronically-infected volunteers with detectable levels of HCV RNA genotype 1b, who were nonresponders to previous treatment with interferon plus ribavirin, were intramuscularly injected with CIGB-230 on weeks 0, 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20. Individuals were also immunized at weeks 28, 32 and 36 with a recombinant vaccine against hepatitis B.

Taqman real-time PCR for the detection and enumeration of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in wine.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae is the main yeast species responsible for wine fermentation; however, its presence during maturing or barrel-ageing can sometimes result in a reduction in the quality of wine by refermentation. In this work, we developed a quantitative real-time PCR (QPCR) for the rapid detection and quantification of S. cerevisiae in wine.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled study on the effect of vigabatrin on in vivo parameters of hepatic microsomal enzyme induction and on the kinetics of steroid oral contraceptives in healthy female volunteers.

Purpose: This study was conducted to determine whether vigabatrin affects in vivo indices of hepatic microsomal enzyme activity and the pharmacokinetics of steroid oral contraceptives in healthy subjects.

Methods: Under double-blind conditions, 13 female healthy volunteers received, in random order and with a washout interval of > or = 4 weeks, two oral 4-week treatments with vigabatrin (VGB) (maintenance dosage, 3,000 mg daily) and placebo, respectively. The clearance and half-life of antipyrine (a broad marker of drug oxidation capacity), the urinary excretion of 6-beta-hydroxycortisol (a selective marker of cytochrome CYP3A-mediated oxidation), and the activity of serum gamma-glutamyltransferase (a nonspecific index of microsomal enzyme activity) were determined after 3 weeks of each treatment.

Preclinical and clinical studies with latex from Ficus glabrata HBK, a traditional intestinal anthelminthic in the Amazonian area.

Ficus glabrata latex has been a well-known anthelminthic remedy in the neotropical regions since ancient times. The latex has been commercially exploited for decades because of its content of the proteolytic enzyme-complex ficin. A safe dosage regimen with direct use of the latex has been elucidated to control intestinal helminthiasis in the Indian and non-Indian rural population.

Red cells in sickle cell crisis: observations on the pathophysiology of crisis.

The pathophysiology of the occurrence and resolution of sickle cell crisis is unknown. The molecular abnormality is constant, while crisis is episodic. In the present study, red cell filterability and sickling with deoxygenation have been measured during sickle cell crises.
