The natural resistance-associated macrophage protein (NRAMP1), Vitamin-D receptor (VDR) and Tumor necrosis factor (TNF-alpha) have been associated in susceptibility to tuberculosis, but the results have been inconsistent. This study aimed to determine the association of NRAMP1, VDR, and TNF-á variant with development of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) among Iranian patients. The single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) at INT4, D543, 3'UTR of NRAMP1 gene, SNPs in restriction sites of BsmI, and FokI of the VDR gene and SNPs of TNF-alpha at -238,-308, -244,857,-863 positions were analyzed by PCR-RFLP among two groups of individual; patients with PTB (n=117) and healthy controls (n=60).

The limited experience in treating patients with extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) shows a therapeutic success rate under 50-60% and there are no publications regarding the outcome of these patients treated with standardized regimens. All multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) patients hospitalized at the Masih Daneshvari Hospital in Tehran, Iran, during 2004-2007 were recruited. Drug susceptibility testing to 14 drugs (including eight second-line drugs) was performed and a standardized regimen with ofloxacin, cycloserine, prothionamide, and amikacin was administered for all patients.

The Pronto Gaucher kits and Pronto Gaucher RecTL Amplification Mix, marketed to identify mutations in the gene for glucocerebrosidase, are widely used for the diagnosis of Gaucher disease. Subjects genotyped using this kit have been reported with an allele including both the common N370S mutation and RecTL, a previously described Gaucher mutation arising from recombination between the glucocerebrosidase gene and pseudogene. Using direct sequencing and real-time PCR, we show that the RecTL, N370S allele is a false positive result, demonstrating possible pitfalls of diagnostic kits.
