Article Synopsis
  • * The study details the morphology of the Canarian copper fly (Calliphora splendens) and compares it to other Calliphora species found in Africa, the Iberian Peninsula, and Macaronesia.
  • * Genetic analysis shows a close connection between C. splendens and several other Calliphora species, while its ability to produce unisexual offspring and its association with the endemic laurel forest habitat highlight its relict nature.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how accurately the Gail model predicts breast cancer risk in women diagnosed with the disease at a hospital in Venezuela from 2004 to 2014, focusing on age differences.
  • Data were collected from 830 patient records, revealing that the average age of diagnosis was 46 years, with only 41% of patients identified as high-risk by the Gail model, indicating its low precision.
  • Significant predictors of a positive Gail score included early menarche, a family history of breast cancer, previous biopsies, and age at first birth, with variations observed between women over and under 40 years old.

Introduction: There is a paucity of data on breast cancer (BC) patients' gender preferences when it comes to choosing their surgeon, unlike in other specialties like gynaecology and obstetrics, where women tend to prefer a female physician. The aim of this trial was to examine if there are any gender preferences in women with BC at the time of choosing their breast surgeon.

Material And Methods: A cross-sectional, observational and descriptive study with 528 patients, older than 18 years, at the Breast Department 'Servicio Oncológico Hospitalario del Instituto Venezolano de los Seguros Sociales', from January to June 2022.

Article Synopsis
  • The Caribbean spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, is experiencing increased fishing pressure, raising concerns about a potential fisheries collapse.
  • In a study conducted in Colombia, a nemertean worm, Carcinonemertes conanobrieni, was found to significantly affect the reproductive success of these lobsters, leading to higher embryo mortality and lower fecundity in infected females.
  • The findings indicate that the combined effects of C. conanobrieni and environmental stressors could pose serious risks to lobster populations, potentially impacting fisheries on a larger scale.

The estimation of the minimum value of the postmortem interval is affected by well-known abiotic factors such as temperature and humidity, and others relating to the crime scene (e.g. the presence of direct sunlight or shade, immersion in water).

The hoverfly Eristalinus aeneus is an important pollinator of crops and wild plants. However, there is a lack of detailed information about its foraging behaviour and its potential as a managed pollinator of mango. Given the growing economic importance of protected cultivation of mango, our aim is to study the flight activity and foraging behaviour of E.

The biology of macrochelid mites might offer new venues for the interpretation of the environmental conditions surrounding human death and decomposition. Three human corpses, one from Sweden and two from Spain, have been analysed for the occurrence of Macrochelidae species. Macrocheles muscaedomesticae (Scopoli) females were associated with a corpse that was found in a popular beach area of southeast Spain.

A checklist of the 39 species of blow flies (Calliphoridae and Mesembrinellidae) so far known to occur in Venezuela is provided, based on a thorough literature review and the examination of ca. 500 specimens deposited in the main entomological collections of the country. Data from the literature and museum collections were used to generate distribution maps for 37 species.

A case where Fannia leucosticta (Meigen, 1838) was breeding in human corpses is reported for the first time. One larva and one unemerged puparium were recovered from two corpses in an advanced stage of decomposition, found in autumn in Alicante province, Spain.

Objective: to determine the distribution of HCV genotypes in a group of HCV infected patients in Mexicali, Mexico.

Methods: a retrospective study which included 66 HCV-infected patients was done. Anti-HCV antibodies were measured by ELISA and were confirmed by the detection of viral RNA in the serum.

The muscid Synthesiomyia nudiseta (van der Wulp, 1883) is a species with forensic importance in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. This fly has recently been introduced into southern Europe and, until now, had not been recorded in forensic cases in this region. Here, morphology of all larval instars of S.

Objectives: To determine the prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and its predictors in general hospital personnel.

Methods: Two tuberculin skin tests (TSTs) were carried out within 2 years in a sample of 371 health care workers (HCWs) at a general hospital in Santiago de Cuba Province, along with an interview to explore the association of LTBI with age, sex, occupation, contact history of TB and bacille Calmette-Guérin scar. A 10 mm cut-off point was used; an increase of ≥10 mm in the second TST was considered as tuberculin conversion.

The carrion beetle Oxelytrum discicolle (Brullé, 1840) has forensic importance in the Neotropical region. The age of their larvae can provide important information to estimate the minimum postmortem interval of the corpse. This study was designed to determine the larval stages of this species, using three morphological measurements, as follows: distance between dorsal stemmata, pronotal width, and total body length.

A revision of the species and families of sarcosaprophagous flies (Diptera: Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae, Muscidae, Fanniidae, Drosophilidae, Phoridae, Piophilidae and Stratiomyidae) suitable for forensic purposes in the Iberian Peninsula is presented. Morphological characteristics that allow the accurate identification of third instars of the species present in the Iberian Peninsula are described and presented in the form of a diagnostic key. For larval Calliphoridae, characteristics such as the spines of the body segments were useful for the genus Calliphora whereas features of the anal segment and the cephalopharyngeal skeleton were useful for larvae of Lucilia.

Due to its necrophagy, the Neotropical beetle Oxelytrum discicolle (Brullé, 1840) is found in association with human corpses. Its biology can provide important information to determine the postmortem interval (PMI). We studied the life cycle of O.

This is the first report of arthropods associated with carrion in Venezuela, using laboratory bred rats (Rattus norvegicus). Rat carcasses were exposed to colonization by arthropods in neighboring montane savanna and cloud forest habitats in the state of Miranda. The taxonomic composition of the arthropods varied between both ecosystems.
