Computed tomography is commonly used to evaluate feline otic disease; however, published studies characterizing the CT appearance of ear canal neoplasia are limited. The purpose of this multicenter, retrospective, secondary analysis, cross-sectional study was to describe the CT features of histopathologically confirmed feline ear canal neoplasia. The CT studies of 25 cats with ear canal neoplasia were prospectively scored by consensus of two veterinary radiologists.

Methods: Measurements were made with the use of a helical fan beam sCT system (Equina; Asto CT Inc). Scatter radiation was measured in different positions in the sCT room to mimic the location of the control operator, horse handler, and lead rope handler during simulated equine head and limb imaging.
Collisions between the DNA replication machinery and co-transcriptional R-loops can impede DNA synthesis and are a major source of genomic instability in cancer cells. How cancer cells deal with R-loops to proliferate is poorly understood. Here we show that the ATP-dependent chromatin remodelling INO80 complex promotes resolution of R-loops to prevent replication-associated DNA damage in cancer cells.

Taking the National Health Service (NHS) as the focal point of discussion, the article presents a historical analysis of the shifting nature and function of obligation as it relates to this institution. Specifically, and drawing inspiration from recent literature that takes seriously the notion of the tie or bond at the core of obligation, the article explores how the forms of social relation and bonds underpinning a system like the NHS have shifted across time.

The recommendations are designed to help individuals and organizations maintain ethical and transparent publication practices and comply with legal and regulatory requirements. These recommendations cover publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations (oral or poster) at scientific congresses.

Focusing on the Watts case and the recently adopted EU Patients' Rights Directive, the article addresses the political and economic aspects of the implications of EU Law for, inter alia, domestic law, medicine, and the NHS. It does so through developing an analytical framework comprising the notions of juridification and medicalisation.

For almost 30 years, this has been provided by quadrivalent polysaccharide vaccine to protect against serogroups A, C, W-135 and Y, but with the advent of quadrivalent conjugate vaccines is there still a case to use the polysaccharide? The well documented hyporesponsiveness induced by polysaccharide vaccines after repeated administration, most clearly observed against serogroup C, suggest that, where available, conjugate vaccines should always be considered ahead of polysaccharide vaccine.

Adults seeking H1N1v vaccination may be offered seasonal vaccine as well. We investigated prior seasonal vaccination in adult and elderly subjects, and concomitant vaccination with seasonal vaccine in adults, on the tolerability and immunogenicity of the Novartis MF59-adjuvanted H1N1v vaccine, Focetria.

ISMPP's mission is to support the educational needs of medical publication professionals by providing a forum to facilitate awareness and development of best practices in publication planning and implementation, and fostering consensus policies related to medical publishing. This position statement reflects our concern about the current climate of mistrust regarding the use of professional medical writers in the preparation of manuscripts.

Our main purpose in doing so is to try to understand more fully the nature of law's regulation of the existence and non-existence of life. Specifically, we argue that, by broadening the understanding of autonomy in this area beyond a simple concern for patients' rights and self-determination, to include a focus on the individual generally, it becomes possible to identify some of the legal practices that are central to the manner in which law regulates the threshold between life and death.

Both vaccines induced high levels of protective antibodies, but typhoid responses were higher and hepatitis A responses more rapid with Viatim compared with Hepatyrix. Both vaccines were well tolerated, no serious adverse events (SAEs) occurred, but more Viatim vaccinees had more mild or moderate local reactions (82.

Inactivated hepatitis A vaccines were developed in the 1980s and were introduced during the early 1990s. The Aventis Pasteur (AvP) inactivated hepatitis A virus antigen is used in several different vaccine formulations licensed for adults and children. Presented here are the immunogenicity results compiled from 37 clinical trials performed in 20 different countries between 1991 and 2001 in which these vaccines were administered to adults (16 years of age and over), children (aged 12 months-17 years), and infants (younger than 12 months).

The efficacies of this batch, a second stage pERIG HT batch and reference RIG preparations (Imorab, Imogam Rage pasteurised, Berna antiserum) were compared in mice challenged with either Ariana canine field strain or CVS strain. Survival rates against Ariana challenge with the second pERIG HT batch were indistinguishable from those of other licensed preparations (83-90% survival), but the deficient batch did not provide satisfactory protection (53%).

These effects could be reversed by inclusion of fimbriae (FIM) 2 and 3 in the formulation. These data emphasis the importance of correct formulation for such vaccines.

The members of the mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase family -- p44/p42 MAP kinase (ERK), c-jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and p38 MAP kinase (p38) are known to be important mediators of the physiological plasticity or neurotoxicity induced in the striatum by activation of ionotropic glutamate receptors. However, our knowledge of the class of glutamate receptor and the intracellular pathways involved derives totally from studies on embryonic neurons, where the mechanisms are likely to be totally different from those operating in mature neurons. In superfused striatal slices from adult rats, NMDA and kainate, but not AMPA, were found to activate ERK.

However, the class of glutamate receptor and the intracellular pathways involved have not been determined. Kainate, but not AMPA or NMDA, was found to activate NF-kappaB in superfused slices of rat striatum.

Its mechanism is thought to mainly involve a switch in substrate utilisation from fatty acids to glucose to, thus, improve efficiency of O2 use; however, its precise molecular target(s) are unknown. In studies to investigate its action further, using isolated rat heart mitochondria, ranolazine was found to weakly inhibit (pIC50 values > 300 microM) respiration by coupled mitochondria provided with NAD(+)-linked substrates but not with succinate.

They have been implicated recently in the aggravation, or even the induction, of parkinsonism in elderly patients. Because the aetiology of parkinsonism has been suggested as having a mitochondrial component, we have investigated the effects of both compounds on mitochondrial respiration and on the activities of the individual respiratory chain complexes.

Glycolysis was stimulated to different extents by increasing the concentration of glucose, increasing the workload, or by the addition of insulin. The glycolytic flux was measured by the rate of detritiation of [2-3H]- and [3-3H]glucose.
