The interferon-rich skin environment regulates Langerhans cell ADAM17 to promote photosensitivity in lupus.

The autoimmune disease lupus erythematosus (lupus) is characterized by photosensitivity, where even ambient ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure can lead to development of inflammatory skin lesions. We have previously shown that Langerhans cells (LCs) limit keratinocyte apoptosis and photosensitivity via a disintegrin and metalloprotease 17 (ADAM17)-mediated release of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) ligands and that LC ADAM17 sheddase activity is reduced in lupus. Here, we sought to understand how the lupus skin environment contributes to LC ADAM17 dysfunction and, in the process, differentiate between effects on LC ADAM17 sheddase function, LC ADAM17 expression, and LC numbers.

9-year follow-up of uncommon cleft palate in Aarskog-Scott syndrome.

Aarskog-Scott syndrome (AAS) is characterized by different facial, skeletal and genital anomalies and may have oral manifestations. A 7-year-old boy was referred to the University General Hospital for treatment of speech difficulties and frequent regurgitation. Characteristics such as a triangle-shaped face, hypertelorism, low-set ears, flattened nose, shawl scrotum and partial syndactylia on hands and feet were observed.

Vitamin D and SARS-CoV-2 Infection: SERVE Study (SARS-CoV-2 Exposure and the Role of Vitamin D among Hospital Employees).

Background: Recognition of the role of vitamin D in immune function has led to interest in its relationship with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Although clinical studies to date have had conflicting results, many individuals currently take high doses of vitamin D to prevent infection.

Objective: The goal of this study was to investigate the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) and vitamin D supplement use with incident SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Methods: We developed clinically relevant Patient/Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcomes questions. After conducting a systematic literature review, the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach was used to rate the quality of evidence (high, moderate, low, or very low).

Periodontal Findings in Children and Adolescents with Cleft Lip and/or Palate: A Case-Control Study.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate periodontal disease and oral biofilm in children and adolescents with cleft lip and/or palate (CLP). A total of 118 individuals aged six to 18 years, with CLP ( equals 60) and without CLP (n equals 58), were evaluated according to plaque index (PI), gingival bleeding index (BI), clinical attachment level (CAL), and probing pocket depth (PPD). Gingivitis and periodontitis were also diagnosed.

Fibroblast subtypes in tissues affected by autoimmunity: with lessons from lymph node fibroblasts.

The recent advent of single-cell technologies has fast-tracked the discovery of multiple fibroblast subsets in tissues affected by autoimmune disease. In recent years, interest in lymph node fibroblasts that support and regulate immune cells has also grown, leading to an expanding framework of stromal cell subsets with distinct spatial, transcriptional, and functional characteristics. Inflammation can drive tissue fibroblasts to adopt a lymphoid tissue stromal cell phenotype, suggesting that fibroblasts in diseased tissues can have counterparts in lymphoid tissues.

Monitoring metal pollution on coastal lagoons using Cerastoderma edule-a report from a moderately impacted system in Western Portugal (Óbidos Lagoon).

The main goal of this monitoring program was to evaluate the contamination in the intertidal environment of Óbidos Lagoon by the metals Cd, Pb, and Ni on water, sediments, and on biological samples, using the bivalve Cerastoderma edule (common name: cockle) as a biomonitor. Since C. edule is an edible mollusc, the risk of their consumption by humans from this lagoon was also evaluated.

Can different stages of leprosy treatment influence the profile of oral health? Oral status in leprosy.

Background: The aim of study was to evaluate the oral health status, salivary flow and halitosis among individuals diagnosed with leprosy as compared with healthy subjects.

Material And Methods: A sample of 160 individuals was allocated into four groups, as follows: (G1) individuals with complete leprosy treatment; (G2) individuals diagnosed with leprosy and under multi-drug therapy; (G3) individuals diagnosed with leprosy not yet under treatment; and (G4) healthy individuals. Then individuals were submitted to periodontal clinical examination (visible plaque index, bleeding index, depth of probing and clinical attachment level); DMFT index (decayed-missing-filled teeth index); evaluation of salivary flow and halitosis using a halimeter equipment (Interscan Corp, Chatsworth, CA, USA).

Airway Autoimmune Inflammatory Response (AAIR) Syndrome: An Asthma-Autoimmune Overlap Disorder?

Asthma encompasses numerous phenotypes that may require alternate approaches to diagnosis and therapy, particularly for patients whose symptoms remain poorly controlled despite escalating treatment. We describe 3 patients with apparent asthma who demonstrated unusual findings on cryobiopsy by flexible bronchoscopy and responded to therapy directed against autoimmune disease.

Caries Experience and Periodontal Status in Children and Adolescents with Cleft Lip and Palate.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the rate of dental caries and the periodontal status of children and adolescents with cleft lip and palate (CLP) and to compare them with gender- and age-matched control subjects.

Methods: A total of 156 five- to 18-year-olds, with or without CLP, were examined for dental caries (decayed, missing and filled permanent teeth and primary surfaces [DMFT and dmfs, respectively] indices), plaque index (PI), the gingival bleeding index (BI), clinical attachment level (CAL), and probing pocket depth (PPD). Diagnoses of gingivitis (localized and generalized) and periodontitis (mild, moderate, and advanced) were performed.

Clinical and Radiographic Assessment of Secondary Bone Graft Outcomes in Cleft Lip and Palate Patients.

[Factorial analysis of correspondence of the social representations about nurse nocturnal work].

The study aimed to apprehend the Social Representations of nurses on nocturnal work. It was based on the Theory of Social Representations with qualitative and quantitative approaches. The free evocations of 25 nurses in a public hospital in Salvador-Bahia were collected, that underwent the Factorial Analysis of Correspondence (FAC).

Bisphenol A exposure leads to specific microRNA alterations in placental cells.

Exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) has been observed to alter developmental pathways and cell processes, at least in part, through epigenetic mechanisms. This study sought to investigate the effect of BPA on microRNAs (miRNAs) in human placental cells. miRNA microarray was performed following BPA treatment in three immortalized cytotrophoblast cell lines and the results validated using quantitative real-time PCR.

[Knowledge production in nursing: the (in)visibility of the attention to the health of the elderly].

Bibliographical, exploratory and descriptive research, with a quantitative approach, aiming at identifying the occurrence of nursing studies about healthcare for the elderly and analyzing the production of this knowledge in five nursing journals published in 2005. The results show that the number of journals in this area is very limited, 3.7%.

[School girls' perception and knowledge about breastfeeding].

Objective: To compare two groups of school age girls from different social strata were compared in terms of their perception and knowledge about breastfeeding.

Methods: A structured questionnaire was applied to all 346 4th to 8th grade girls attending two schools, a private one, whose students belonged to the upper class (School A), and a public one, whose students belonged to the lower class (School B).

Results: About 90% of the girls reported having been breastfed and more than 98% had seen a mother breastfeeding.

[Management of technology in intensive care].

The lives of hospitalized patients depend on diagnostic-therapeutic procedures and on the care provided by the health team. It also depends on the quality and availability of factors such as: physical structure and material and human and financial resources. The need to optimize these resources and re-establish patients' health has brought about the Intensive Care Units (ICU), whose design must consider the physical environment and clinical equipment which are indispensable in health care.

[Nursing performance in materials management in intensive care units].

This study had as a goal to identify the nursing practice in management of material resources in a general hospital. It is a descriptive work of quanti-qualitative nature, performed in four ICU's (Intensive Care Units) among the largest general hospitals in Salvador-Bahia. It has been observed that (only) in three out of four Units, there was the presence of nurses in the commission of material purchase and selection.
