[Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy: 5-year experience at out center (1997-2002)].

Gauderer and Ponsky first described percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) in 1979. It was introduced as a routine method in the Division of Gastroenterology, University Hospital Rebro, Zagreb, in 1995. Over the years the number of PEG insertions has increased significantly.

Nutritional screening of patients undergoing surgery or oncological treatment in four Croatian hospitals.

Aim: To identify malnourishment of surgical and oncologic patients or those at risk of becoming malnourished at four hospital centers in Croatia by use of nutritional screening questionnaire developed specifically for the purpose of this study.

Method: The study included 1639 adult patients: 1475 scheduled for various surgical treatments and 164 oncologic patients receiving primary or adjuvant radio- and/or chemotherapy. The nutritional screening questionnaire consisted of data on recently reduced food intake and weight loss, body mass index (BMI), estimated period of perioperative fasting or oncologic disease status, categorization of surgical procedure, and additional stress expected.

Hansenula anomala outbreak at a surgical intensive care unit: a search for risk factors.

During a 5-month period, Hansenula anomala (H. anomala), an opportunistic fungus, caused an outbreak of infections in eight adult patients treated at a surgical intensive care unit (ICU). The source of the infections and route of transmission could not be identified.
