Asphalt, widely used in infrastructure, emits complex chemical mixtures throughout its service life, posing significant risks to human health and the environment. This expanded understanding extends the concern from a construction-related hazard to a broader public health issue, especially affecting vulnerable populations like children who play on blacktop surfaces. Despite increased awareness, the specific mechanisms behind asphalt emissions, their impact on asphalt deterioration, and their effects on the human nervous system remain poorly understood.

Unlabelled: Specialized host-microbe symbioses are ecological communities, whose composition is shaped by various processes. Microbial community assembly in these symbioses is determined in part by interactions between taxa that colonize ecological niches available within habitat patches. The outcomes of these interactions, and by extension the trajectory of community assembly, can display priority effects-dependency on the order in which taxa first occupy these niches.

Critical to our understanding of infections and their treatment is the role the innate immune system plays in controlling bacterial pathogens. Nevertheless, many in vivo systems are made or modified such that they do not have an innate immune response. Use of these systems denies the opportunity to examine the synergy between the immune system and antimicrobial agents.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists don't know much about vulvar squamous cell carcinoma (VSCC), a cancer mostly found in older women, especially about its mutations and how different types affect survival.
  • In a study of 60 patients, they found three main types of VSCC related to the human papillomavirus (HPV) and some common gene mutations, particularly in the TP53 gene.
  • Patients with mutations in TP53 and CCND1 had a much higher chance of their cancer coming back, suggesting that these changes could help doctors find better treatments for VSCC.

Measuring the abundance of microbes in a sample is a common procedure with a long history, but best practices are not well-conserved across microbiological fields. Serial dilution methods are commonly used to dilute bacterial cultures to produce countable numbers of colonies, and from these counts, to infer bacterial concentrations measured in colony-forming units (CFUs). The most common methods to generate data for CFU point estimates involve plating bacteria on (or in) a solid growth medium and counting their resulting colonies or counting the number of tubes at a given dilution that have growth.

Background: International guidelines have recommended cognitive behavioural therapy, including acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), as it offers validated benefits for managing fibromyalgia; however, it is inaccessible to most patients. We aimed to evaluate the effect of a 12-week, self-guided, smartphone-delivered digital ACT programme on fibromyalgia management.

Methods: In the PROSPER-FM randomised clinical trial conducted at 25 US community sites, adult participants aged 22-75 years with fibromyalgia were recruited and randomly assigned (1:1) to the digital ACT group or an active control group that offered daily symptom tracking and monitoring and access to health-related and fibromyalgia-related educational materials.

Specialized host-microbe symbioses canonically show greater diversity than expected from simple models, both at the population level and within individual hosts. To understand how this heterogeneity arises, we utilize the squash bug, Anasa tristis, and its bacterial symbionts in the genus Caballeronia. We modulate symbiont bottleneck size and inoculum composition during colonization to demonstrate the significance of ecological drift, the noisy fluctuations in community composition due to demographic stochasticity.

Microbial evolution within polymicrobial communities is a complex process. Here, we report within-species diversification within multispecies microbial communities during experimental evolution with the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. We describe morphological diversity in the target species Chryseobacterium gleum, which developed a novel colony morphotype in a small number of replicate communities.

Background: Theory and correlational research indicate organizational leadership and climate are important for successful implementation of evidence-based practices (EBPs) in healthcare settings; however, experimental evidence is lacking. We addressed this gap using data from the WISDOM (Working to Implement and Sustain Digital Outcome Measures) hybrid type III effectiveness-implementation trial. Primary outcomes from WISDOM indicated the Leadership and Organizational Change for Implementation (LOCI) strategy improved fidelity to measurement-based care (MBC) in youth mental health services.

Among the causes of chest pain, slipping rib has a low prevalence, usually with a history of trauma, and its management is controversial. Slipping rib syndrome should be included in the differential diagnosis of causes of chest pain in children. When not associated with previous trauma and cartilage deformity, it is necessary to consider an alteration in rib development, regardless of the typical traumatic etiology in adults.

Objective: Measurement-based care (MBC), which collects session-by-session symptom data from patients and provides clinicians with feedback on treatment response, is a highly generalizable evidence-based practice with significant potential to improve the outcomes of mental health treatment in youth when implemented with fidelity; however, it is rarely used in community settings. This study tested whether an implementation strategy targeting organizational leadership and organizational implementation climate could improve MBC fidelity and clinical outcomes for youth in outpatient mental health clinics.

Method: In a cluster randomized trial, 21 clinics were assigned to the Leadership and Organizational Change for Implementation strategy plus training and technical assistance in MBC (k = 11, n = 117) or training and technical assistance only (k = 10, n = 117).

The SARS CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic presented unprecedented challenges as communities attempted to respond to the administration of a novel vaccine that faced cold chain logistical requirements and vaccine hesitancy among many, as well as complicated phased rollout plans that changed frequently as availability of the vaccine waxed and waned. The COVID-19 pandemic also disproportionately affected communities of color and communities with barriers to accessing healthcare. In the setting of these difficulties, a program was created specifically to address inequity in vaccine administration with a focus on communities of color and linguistic diversity as well as those who had technological barriers to online sign-up processes common at mass vaccination sites.

Understanding how horizontally transmitted mutualisms are maintained is a major focus of symbiosis research. Unlike vertical transmission, hosts that rely on horizontal transmission produce symbiont-free offspring that must find and acquire their beneficial microbes from the environment. This transmission strategy is inherently risky since hosts may not obtain the right symbiont every generation.
