Article Synopsis
  • The Letter reports the most accurate measurement so far of the matter-antimatter imbalance during Pb-Pb collisions at a high energy level of 5.02 TeV.
  • It utilizes the Statistical Hadronization framework to determine precise values for the electric charge and baryon chemical potentials, μ_{Q} and μ_{B}.
  • The analysis of antiparticle-to-particle yield ratios shows that the collisions create a system that is generally baryon-free and electrically neutral at midrapidity.

The ALICE Collaboration reports the measurement of semi-inclusive distributions of charged-particle jets recoiling from a high transverse momentum (high p_{T}) hadron trigger in proton-proton and central Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV. A data-driven statistical method is used to mitigate the large uncorrelated background in central Pb-Pb collisions.

K^{+}K^{-} pairs may be produced in photonuclear collisions, either from the decays of photoproduced ϕ(1020) mesons or directly as nonresonant K^{+}K^{-} pairs. Measurements of K^{+}K^{-} photoproduction probe the couplings between the ϕ(1020) and charged kaons with photons and nuclear targets. The kaon-proton scattering occurs at energies far above those available elsewhere.

Beside biosecurity, vaccination is important for (MS) control as it has been shown to contribute to the reduction of economic impact and, experimentally, also lessens horizontal transmission. In this study, the effect of MS live vaccination on horizontal transmission was quantified under field conditions by analysing 4-year MS monitoring data from non-MS-vaccinated broiler and layer breeders and MS-vaccinated broiler breeders with good biosecurity in single-age housing systems. Flocks were monitored at 20 and 30 weeks of age and every 12 weeks thereafter.

Article Synopsis
  • - This Letter discusses the measurement of ridge yields from charged hadron angular correlations in proton-proton collisions at a high energy of 13 TeV, specifically within certain pseudorapidity and transverse momentum ranges.
  • - The research extends ridge yield measurements to low charged-particle multiplicity regions, where typically a strong interacting medium is not expected to form during collisions.
  • - Findings indicate that ridge yields in pp collisions are significantly higher than those observed in e^{+}e^{-} collisions, suggesting that processes in e^{+}e^{-} annihilations do not significantly influence long-range correlations in proton-proton interactions.

Article Synopsis
  • The ALICE detector measured the cross section for incoherent photonuclear production of J/ψ vector mesons, focusing on the Mandelstam |t| variable, during ultraperipheral collisions of Pb nuclei at a very high energy of 5.02 TeV.
  • The measurement was conducted within a rapidity interval of |y|<0.8 and covers a specific range of Bjorken-x values.
  • Analysis showed that models without quantum fluctuations in the gluon density predicted a much steeper |t|-dependence than observed, but including these fluctuations improved the models' alignment with the data.

Article Synopsis
  • Understanding how parton mass and Casimir color factors affect heavy quark emissions is key to studying quantum chromodynamics (QCD).
  • This research presents the first experimental constraint on the charm-quark splitting function, obtained through measurements in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV.
  • Findings indicate that charm quarks show a steeper splitting function compared to gluons and light quarks, experiencing fewer emissions with a lower likelihood of large-angle emissions.

The most precise measurements to date of the _{Λ}^{3}H lifetime τ and Λ separation energy B_{Λ} are obtained using the data sample of Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV collected by ALICE at the LHC. The _{Λ}^{3}H is reconstructed via its charged two-body mesonic decay channel (_{Λ}^{3}H→^{3}He+π^{-} and the charge-conjugate process).

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases, characterized by amyloid beta (Aβ) and hyperphosphorylated tau accumulation in the brain. Recent studies indicated that memory retrieval, rather than memory formation, was impaired in the early stage of AD. Our previous study reported that pharmacological activation of hippocampal Epac2 promoted memory retrieval in .

Article Synopsis
  • * A notable negative correlation between the production of antiprotons and antideuterons was found across various collision centralities.
  • * Comparisons with theoretical models show that while a coalescence calculation explains certain statistical features, it struggles with the specifics of antiproton-antideuteron correlations, whereas thermal-statistical models can align with observations but imply different correlation volumes.

The transverse-momentum (p_{T}) spectra and coalescence parameters B_{2} of (anti)deuterons are measured in p-p collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV for the first time in and out of jets. In this measurement, the direction of the leading particle with the highest p_{T} in the event (p_{T}^{lead}>5  GeV/c) is used as an approximation for the jet axis. The event is consequently divided into three azimuthal regions, and the jet signal is obtained as the difference between the toward region, that contains jet fragmentation products in addition to the underlying event (UE), and the transverse region, which is dominated by the UE.

Background: Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are key soil organisms and their extensive hyphae create a unique hyphosphere associated with microbes actively involved in N cycling. However, the underlying mechanisms how AMF and hyphae-associated microbes may cooperate to influence NO emissions from "hot spot" residue patches remain unclear. Here we explored the key microbes in the hyphosphere involved in NO production and consumption using amplicon and shotgun metagenomic sequencing.

Background: Inherited platelet disorders (IPDs) are a heterogeneous group of rare diseases that are caused by the defects in early megakaryopoiesis, proplatelet formation, and/or mature platelet function. Although genomic sequencing is increasingly used to identify genetic variants underlying IPD, this technique does not disclose resulting molecular changes that impact platelet function. Proteins are the functional units that shape platelet function; however, insights into how variants that cause IPDs impact platelet proteomes are limited.

Play in nature-based environments in childhood education has positive benefits for child development. Although previous reviews showed the benefits of play in nature-based environments for child development they did not attempt to understand how and why nature-based environments contribute to play quality. This review aims to explore the value of play in nature-based environments compared to non-nature-based environments for developmental outcomes of young children (2-8 year).

Cigarette smoke (CS) and air pollutants (AP) activate pathological processes in bronchial epithelial cells resulting in lung function decline which severely impacts human health. Knowledge about the molecular mechanism(s) by which CS and AP induce pathology is limited. Our previous studies in 2D cultures of human bronchial epithelial (BEAS-2B) cells showed that CS exposure activates transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) release and signaling.

Exchange proteins directly activated by cAMP (Epac) proteins are implicated in a wide range of cellular functions including oxidative stress and cell survival. Mitochondrial-dependent oxidative stress has been associated with progressive neuronal death underlying the pathology of many neurodegenerative diseases. The role of Epac modulation in neuronal cells in relation to cell survival and death, as well as its potential effect on mitochondrial function, is not well established.

Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) is a powerful, high-resolution imaging technique widely used to analyze the structure of fibrin networks. Currently, structural features, such as fiber diameter, length, density, and porosity, are mostly analyzed manually, which is tedious and may introduce user bias. A reliable, automated structural image analysis method would mitigate these drawbacks.

In Europe, monitoring of breeding stock for Pullorum (SP) or a Gallinarum (SG) infections is compulsory at the point of lay. Vaccinations against Enteritidis (SE) and Typhimurium (ST) are increasingly administered in Europe. These vaccines might induce cross-reactions in the rapid plate agglutination (RPA) SP/SG test due to shared O-antigens, possibly resulting in a lower test specificity.

Icebergs represent nearly half of the mass loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet and provide a distributed source of freshwater along fjords which can alter fjord circulation, nutrient levels, and ultimately the Meridional Overturning Circulation. Here we present analyses of high resolution optical satellite imagery using convolutional neural networks to accurately delineate iceberg edges in two East Greenland fjords. We find that a significant portion of icebergs in fjords are comprised of small icebergs that were not detected in previously-available coarser resolution satellite images.

Almost two decades ago, in addition to a compulsory (Mg) monitoring programme of breeding stock based on European Union regulations, the Dutch poultry industry added national regulations to further reduce the Mg prevalence in Dutch commercial poultry. Currently, all commercial chicken and turkey flocks except broilers are monitored for Mg. All breeding flocks on a farm where one or more flocks tested Mg positive are culled.
