Using the APAAP technique, we assessed the reactivity of five monoclonal antibodies, JSB1, C219, Mab 57, 2F8 and MRK16, to gp 170 in 60 cases of de novo acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and 13 relapses. Reactivity, varied between the five antibodies, and positivity was obtained with 2F8 > JSB1 > MRK16 > Mab57 > C219. Sixteen of the 60 cases were also studied by flow cytometry.

Background: In lymphoproliferative diseases the expression of Bcl-2, a mitochondrial oncoprotein capable of blocking apoptosis, is well-documented, while little research has been carried out on its distribution in myeloproliferative conditions.

Methods: Using immunocytochemical methods, 63 cases of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) at onset and 10 relapses were studied to investigate Bcl-2 expression and any possible correlations with subtypes of the FAB classification, sex, age or white cell peripheral blood count at onset.

Results: Bcl-2 is present in 87.

Phagocytes infiltrating neoplastic tissues have peculiar membrane phenotype and functional properties. Tumor-associated macrophages (TAM) play a complex, ambiguous role in the regulation of primary tumor growth and metastasis (a "macrophage balance"). Yet these cells are strategically located at the very interface between tumor and host and represent a potential target for immunomodulation.

An increasing number of elderly patients with uraemia are treated by dialysis therapy. Virtually every published study on nutritional status of patients undergoing maintenance haemodialysis treatment or continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) has indicated that a substantial proportion of patients undergoing regular dialysis treatment have protein calorie malnutrition. Problems of undernutrition increase significantly with age; a combination of socioeconomic, psychological, and biochemical problems interfering with acquiring and assimilating a balanced diet are responsible for nutritional deficiencies in older people.

Objective: In the present study we investigated the cytologic and colposcopic characteristics of a cohort of HIV-infected women, with the aim to determine a relationship between immunologic status and frequency and/or severity of cervical abnormalities.

Materials And Methods: 21 women, who tested positive for the HIV antibody and who were admitted as outpatients because of various gynecologic complications or because of an HIV infection that was under regular clinical surveillance. A pelvic examination was performed and Papanicolaou smears were obtained from endocervix and ectocervix before colposcopic examination.

Endothelioma cell lines transformed by polyoma virus middle T antigen (mTa) cause cavernous hemangiomas in syngeneic mice by recruitment of host cells. The production of nitric oxide (NO), as measured by nitrite and citrulline production, was significantly higher in mTa-transformed endothelial cells in comparison with nontransformed control cells. The maximal activity of NO synthase (NOS) was about 200-fold higher in cell lysates from the tEnd.

Over a 10-year period, 1,990 end-stage renal disease patients in 30 centers were treated with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis by the Italian Cooperative Peritoneal Dialysis Study Group. At the start of treatment, patients had an average age of 58.4 years, with a 66% prevalence of one or more clinical risk factors for premature death.

The present study was designed to explore the interaction of interleukin-13 (IL-13) with vascular endothelial cells (EC). In vitro exposure to IL-13 of human umbilical vein EC induced surface expression of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1). At optimal concentrations (10 to 50 ng/mL) and exposure times (24 hours), IL-13 was a twofold to threefold less effective inducer of VCAM-1 than IL-1, which was used as reference EC activator.

In the present multicenter study, 120 pts who had been treated by both hemodialysis (HD) and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) for at least 6 months each, were invited to answer questions on 34 matters, to compare symptoms and their well-being while on the two treatments. Patients were invited to choose HD or CAPD and indicate the reasons for their choice. For 28 patients the first treatment was HD and for 92 CAPD.

A retroviral construct encoding polyoma middle-sized T antigen was used to generate transformed endothelial cell lines from heart (H5V), brain (B9V), and whole-embryo (E10V) of C57BL/6 mice. When injected into syngeneic recipients, H5V and the less studied B9V and E10V cells caused vascular tumors which, depending on the number of cells inoculated, regressed or progressed, leading to death of the host. When H5V cells were injected into immunodeficient mice, tumors were observed with inocula which did not form lesions in immunocompetent recipients and regression did not occur.

Interferon alpha (alpha-IFN) is increasingly used for the treatment of patients affected by polycythemia vera (PV). As prior studies are difficult to interpret in view of the lack of appropriate controls, we undertook a randomized comparison of lymphoblastoid alpha-IFN (alpha n-1 IFN) treatment against venesection treatment alone. In a crossover trial, we treated 22 PV patients alternatively for 5 months each with 3 MU/day sc of alpha n-1 IFN and phlebotomy alone.

The frequency and characteristics of episodes of accidental symptomatic introduction of Amuchina in CAPD patients has been retrospectively analyzed in patients treated with three different CAPD systems with disinfectant (two reusable Y set and one disposable Y set). The rate of accidental introduction of Amuchina was 1 episode every 8981 exchanges (1/8620 with the log Baxter Y set, 1/11,060 exchanges with the short Baxter Y set and with the Bieffe L3 system). One to 15 fresh dialysis exchanges were required to relief pain due to the introduction of disinfectant.

Polycythaemia vera is a clonal disorder of the haemopoietic stem cell causing a pathologic expansion of the erythroid and sometimes the megakaryocytic and myeloid elements. In order to avoid the possible mutagenic effects of radioactive phosphorus, alkylating agents and hydroxyurea, since 1988 alpha-IFN has been used for the treatment of PV and has been shown to induce and maintain haematological remission. We describe a 24-year-old PV patient with chromosomal abnormalities who achieved not only a reduction of the proliferation of erythroid elements and reticulin content in the bone marrow, but also a complete cytogenetic remission after IFN treatment.

Hypotension and orthostatic hypotension are frequently observed in CAPD patients. In the present paper the possible causes of these complications were reviewed, and the roles of sodium and water were pointed out. In addition, we reported our experience using different sodium concentrations in CAPD dialysis fluid.

Interleukin-10 (IL-10), a product of T helper type 2 (TH2) cells and monocytes, inhibits cytokine production in mononuclear phagocytes. Given the similarities and interrelationship between cells of the monocyte-macrophage lineage and endothelial cells, we examined the effects of IL-10 on vascular endothelium. Murine IL-10 induced low levels of IL-6 production and amplified induction of IL-6 by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or IL-1 in the murine tEND.

In essential thrombocythemia patients alpha-IFN rapidly reduces platelet count, and it is also able to maintain a low count during long-term treatment. In order to verify if long-term IFN treatment can produce sustained remission in selected patients, we decided to suspend IFN treatment in two subsets of 21 patients on long-term alpha-IFN treatment: (a) all six patients who had shown a platelet count below 450 x 10(9)/l for at least 2 months with 3 MU once a week; (b) three patients who had shown the same platelet count for at least 2 months with 3 MU three times a week. After withdrawal of alpha-IFN treatment, a rapid increase in the platelet count was observed in all three patients requiring 3 MU three times a week.
