A deletion polymorphism for glutathione S-transferase M1 (GSTM1) has been related to risk for lung cancer among smokers in some studies but not in others. We examined GSTM1, a GSTT1 deletion polymorphism and a common GSTP1 gene variant (iso-->val), as risk factors for lung cancer in a population-based case-control study of men. Cases (N=274) were males identified from 1993 to 1996 through the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Cancer Surveillance System registry for western Washington State.

Background: Persons with Barrett's esophagus have a substantially greater risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma than the general population. Higher serum selenium levels have been associated with a reduced risk of several cancers; however, their association with the risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma is unknown. We used a cross-sectional study to investigate the relationship between serum selenium levels and markers of neoplastic progression among persons with Barrett's esophagus.

Background & Aims: Genetic variations in proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokine genes influence individual response to carcinogenic exposures. Polymorphisms in interleukin (IL)-1 beta and its endogenous receptor antagonist are associated with risk of Helicobacter pylori-related gastric cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of proinflammatory cytokine gene polymorphisms in gastric and esophageal cancers defined by anatomic subsite.

With growing interest in noninvasive mapping of columnar organization and other small functional structures in the brain, achieving high spatial resolution and specificity in fMRI is of critical importance. We implemented a simple method for BOLD and perfusion fMRI with high spatial resolution and specificity. Increased spatial resolution was achieved by selectively exciting a slab of interest along the phase-encoding direction for EPI, resulting in a reduced FOV and number of phase-encoding steps.

A dramatic increase in the incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma has occurred among men in the United States over the last two decades. The underlying reasons remain largely unknown, although the increasing prevalence of obesity likely plays a role. Most adenocarcinomas arise in a metaplastic epithelium termed Barrett's esophagus (BE) that develops in approximately 10% of persons who have chronic gastroesophageal reflux.

Background: Adenocarcinomas of the esophagus and gastric cardia have risen dramatically in incidence over the past few decades, however, little research has been conducted on the occupational risk factors for these cancers.

Methods: In this population-based case-control study, lifetime job histories were compared between cases of esophageal adenocarcinoma (n = 283), gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (n = 259), and population controls (n = 689). Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for ever employment and by duration in various occupational and industrial categories were calculated using unconditional logistic regression.

Objective: To examine the collagens in cruciate ligaments of young Dunkin-Hartley guinea pigs, to determine whether a change in specific collagen types is an early feature of the spontaneous osteoarthritis (OA), which consistently develops in the medial compartment of the knee in this strain.

Design: Collagen types I, II, III, IX, and XI were detected by immunofluorescence microscopy in the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments of animals at 3, 4-5 and 12 weeks of age. Type II collagen in PCL was further analysed by confocal microscopy or biochemical assay after cyanogen bromide digestion, SDS-PAGE and immunoblotting.

Radiofrequency (RF) field wave behavior and associated nonuniform image intensity at high magnetic field strengths are examined experimentally and numerically. The RF field produced by a 10-cm-diameter surface coil at 300 MHz is evaluated in a 16-cm-diameter spherical phantom with variable salinity, and in the human head. Temporal progression of the RF field indicates that the standing wave and associated dielectric resonance occurring in a pure water phantom near 300 MHz is greatly dampened in the human head due to the strong decay of the electromagnetic wave.

Objective: In order to examine the associations between sinonasal cancer and occupational exposures other than wood dust and leather dust, the data from 12 case-control studies conducted in seven countries were pooled and reanalyzed.

Methods: The pooled data set included 195 adenocarcinoma cases (169 men and 26 women), 432 squamous cell carcinomas (330 men and 102 women), and 3136 controls (2349 men and 787 women). Occupational exposures to formaldehyde, silica dust, textile dust, coal dust, flour dust, asbestos, and man-made vitreous fibers were assessed with a job-exposure matrix.

A nitroreductase with distinct properties that can activate the prodrug 5-aziridinyl-2,4-dinitrobenzamide (CB 1954) was isolated from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. The encoding gene was identified as a homologue of the ywrO of Bacillus subtilis, and was obtained as a PCR product by reverse genetics, cloned and the entire nucleotide sequence determined. The gene was found to reside between homologues of the B.

Previously we have reported expression of an mRNA with homology to the Na(+)-dependent glutamate transporter, GLAST-1, in bone. Here we demonstrate that the complete open reading frame of GLAST-1 mRNA and corresponding 69 kDa protein are expressed in rat bone in vivo. We have also discovered a novel splice variant (GLAST-1a), lacking exon 3, expressed in rat bone and brain.

Using competitive binding experiments, it was found that native type XI collagen binds heparin, heparan sulfate, and dermatan sulfate. However, interactions were not evident with hyaluronic acid, keratan sulfate, or chondroitin sulfate chains over the concentration range studied. Chondrocyte-matrix interactions were investigated using cell attachment to solid phase type XI collagen.

Purpose: To identify whether aging of human vitreous is accompanied by an elevation in degradative enzymes within the tissue.

Methods: Human vitreous samples from donors aged 10 to 88 years were placed in two groups based on donor age of less than or more than 50 years. Homogenized samples were analyzed by gelatin substrate zymography for matrix metalloproteinases (MMP).
