Growing and fostering knowledge translation: Recommendations for health organisations from the SPHERE Envisionarium.

Unlabelled: Despite considerable investments in health research, there is a disconnect between what is known to enhance healthcare and how healthcare is delivered in situ. Knowledge translation (KT) plays a vital role in addressing this disconnect. Some governments promote KT via initiatives that encourage collaboration between researchers, clinicians, communities and others; this includes SPHERE (Sydney Partnership for Health, Education, Research and Enterprise).

Effects of input energy and impactor shape on cranial fracture patterns.

This study documents relationships between input energy, impactor shape, and the formation of fractures in human crania. Parietal impact experiments (n = 12) were performed at 67% higher input energy compared to previously reported experiments. Fracture origins, characteristics, and locations were compared at two input energy levels with three impactor shapes (focal "hammer", flat "brick", and curved "bat").

Sexual and gender minority cultural humility training for oncology settings: An example of iterative adaptation and implementation.

Background: Multiple national organizations recommend that cancer care providers and oncology practices be responsive to the needs of sexual and gender minority (SGM) patients. Oncology practices have attempted to incorporate this recommendation through SGM-focused cultural humility training interventions. It is unclear how best to adapt and implement such training across practices.

The pathological accumulation of cholesterol is a signature feature of Niemann-Pick type C (NPC) disease, in which excessive lipid levels induce Purkinje cell death in the cerebellum. NPC1 encodes a lysosomal cholesterol-binding protein, and mutations in NPC1 drive cholesterol accumulation in late endosomes and lysosomes (LE/Ls). However, the fundamental role of NPC proteins in LE/L cholesterol transport remains unclear.

Varicella zoster virus (VZV) causes childhood chickenpox, becomes latent in sensory ganglia and reactivates years later to cause shingles (Zoster) and postherpetic neuralgia in the elderly and immunosuppressed individuals. Serologic IgG tests can be used to determine if a person has antibodies to VZV from past varicella infection or had received varicella or zoster (shingles) vaccination. Commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) are currently used for the detection of VZV IgG antibodies in patient serum samples.

The unintended negative consequences of knowledge translation in healthcare: A systematic scoping review.

Knowledge translation represents an avenue to address the oft-cited chasm between what should and what does happen in healthcare. Knowledge translation encompasses myriad processes through which different knowledges coalesce to inform practice. However, some reports suggest that experiences with knowledge translation are less than favourable.

: Developing and Evaluating an Art Installation About Health Knowledge.

The HIVE is an arts-based knowledge translation (ABKT) project that showcases work undertaken across Maridulu Budyari Gumal: the Sydney Partnership for Health, Education, Research and Enterprise (SPHERE). Here, we present two distinct forms of data (reflective and evaluative) to tell the story of The HIVE and outline the project's achievements and shortcomings. Reflective data are used to describe the process of establishing a creative, cross-disciplinary collaboration, in order to devise and produce The HIVE.

Exploring Embodied Experience via Videoconferencing: A Method for Body Mapping Online.

Faced with a series of COVID-19 related lockdowns in Australia across 2020 and 2021, and anxious about the safety of our research participants, we developed a novel approach to body mapping, an arts-based research method typically undertaken in-person. We produced a facilitated body mapping workshop hosted via an online videoconferencing platform. Workshops brought together 29 participants with disability, mental distress and/or refugee background who used body mapping to represent their embodied experiences of stigma and discrimination.

The Norwich Osteoarthritis of the Ankle MRI Score (NOAMS): a reliability study.

Aim: To define and test the inter- and intra-rater reliability of a grading system for staging osteoarthritis (OA) of the ankle with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (Norwich Osteoarthritis of the Ankle MRI Score, NOAMS).

Materials And Methods: The MRI features to be included in the score were defined by a multidisciplinary expert panel through a Delphi process. An anonymised randomised dataset of 50 MRI studies was created from patients with concurrent plain radiographs to include 10 ankles of each of the Kellgren-Lawrence grades 0 to 4.

'This bloody rona!': using the digital story completion method and thematic analysis to explore the mental health impacts of COVID-19 in Australia.

Objective: To use the digital story completion method to prompt participants to describe thoughts, fears and mental health experiences in response to a story stem about COVID-19, to capture a specific sociohistoric moment.

Design: We used digital story completion, a qualitative research method, to gather narratives from Australians coping with physical distancing and social restriction measures. Our reflexive thematic analysis of the data was underpinned by a constructionist approach to reflect the importance of social context in understanding health experiences.

Maintaining safe lung cancer surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic in a global city.

Background: SARS-CoV-2 has challenged health service provision worldwide. This work evaluates safe surgical pathways and standard operating procedures implemented in the high volume, global city of London during the first wave of SARS-CoV-2 infection. We also assess the safety of minimally invasive surgery(MIS) for anatomical lung resection.

Investigating reverse butterfly fractures: An experimental approach and application of fractography.

Butterfly fractures are expected to form with the transverse portion on the tension side and the wedge portion on the compression side of a bent bone, however wedges have also been observed in the reverse orientation and are reported to be frequent in concentrated 4-point bending. To investigate how these fractures form, concentrated 4-point bending experiments were performed on nine human femora and documented using high-speed video. Videos showed the wedge portion formed as fracture initiated in tension, branched obliquely, then curved to terminate on the tension face.

Thoracic Surgery during Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19): The Experience of a Level 1 Trauma Center.

Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a novel coronavirus primarily affecting the respiratory system, was initially diagnosed in Wuhan, China, in late 2019. Identified as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) by the World Health Organization, the virus rapidly became a global pandemic. The effects on health care worldwide were unprecedented as countries adapted services to treat masses of critically ill patients.

Women and Stigma: A Protocol for Understanding Intersections of Experience through Body Mapping.

This paper outlines a research and dissemination protocol to be undertaken with specific groups of marginalised women in Australia. Women impacted by significant mental distress, disability, or refugee status are among society's most vulnerable and disenfranchised groups. They can experience significant social exclusion, marginalisation and stigma, associated with reduced help seeking, deprivation of dignity and human rights, and threats to health, well-being and quality of life.

The 2015 merger of health authorities in Nova Scotia was aggressive in pursuit of greater value. The goal was to create an integrated, accountable care network across the entire province. Years of pent-up frustration, death by a thousand cuts, declining service and growing expectations merged into a slow, insidious bleeding of support for change.

Effects of age and rate of twist on torsional fracture patterns in infant porcine femora.

Objective: Long bone fractures are a common injury in the pediatric population. Differentiation between abusive, or non-accidental trauma, and accidental trauma in children remains challenging for forensic practitioners. A recent clinical-based study was able to separate pediatric abusive from accidental trauma based on femoral fracture pattern using the ratio of fracture length over bone diameter (fracture ratio), as determined from radiographic analysis of this fractured bone.

A Matter of Perspective: An Exploratory Study of a Theory of Mind Autism Intervention for Adolescents.

Theory of Mind (ToM) is the capacity to make attributions of mental states such as thoughts, feelings, and beliefs of others. Individuals with autism spectrum disorder are often characterized by delayed or impaired Theory of Mind development and poor social skills. A positive correlation between Theory of Mind skills and social skills exists, but effective interventions that generalize these skills have proven to be a challenge in the field.

Experimental investigation of cranial fracture initiation in blunt human head impacts.

The relationship between the point of blunt impact and the location of cranial fracture initiation continues to be poorly understood. The current study used high-speed video to capture cranial fracture initiation and propagation in impact experiments on twelve unembalmed, intact human cadaver heads. Video footage provided direct evidence that blunt cranial impacts can produce linear fractures initiating peripheral to the impact site.

Unifying classification for transdiaphragmatic intercostal hernia and other costal margin injuries.

Objectives: Taxonomy of injuries involving the costal margin is poorly described and surgical management varies. These injuries, though commonly caused by trauma, may also occur spontaneously, in association with coughing or sneezing, and can be severe. Our goal was to describe our experience using sequential segmental analysis of computed tomographic (CT) scans to perform accurate assessment of injuries around the costal margin.

Older Adults' Internet Use for Health Information: Digital Divide by Race/Ethnicity and Socioeconomic Status.

Building upon literature suggesting low Internet use among racial/ethnic minorities and socioeconomically disadvantaged groups, this study examined how race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status (SES) influence the Internet use for health information, addressing both independent and interactive effects. Using data from 17,704 older adults in the California Health Interview Survey, logistic regression models were estimated with race/ethnicity (Whites, African Americans, Latinos, and Asians), SES index, and the interaction between race/ethnicity and SES index. Overall, approximately 40% of participants were Internet-users for health information.

Individualised risk in patients undergoing lung volume reduction surgery: the Glenfield BFG score.

Lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) has been shown to be beneficial in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, but there is low uptake, partly due to perceived concerns of high operative mortality. We aimed to develop an individualised risk score following LVRS.This was a cohort study of patients undergoing LVRS.

Ovarian hormones, age and pubertal development and their association with days of headache onset in girls with migraine: An observational cohort study.

Background Fifty-three percent of adolescent girls report headaches at the onset of menses, suggesting fluctuations of ovarian hormones trigger migraine during puberty. Aims To determine if urinary metabolites of estrogen and progesterone are associated with days of headache onset (HO) or severity in girls with migraine. Methods This was a pilot study and included 34 girls with migraine balanced across three age strata (pre-pubertal (8-11), pubertal (12-15), and post-pubertal (16-17) years of age).

The Synthesis and Characterization of Highly Fluorescent Polycyclic Azaborine Chromophores.

Six new heteroaromatic polycyclic azaborine chromophores were designed, synthesized, and investigated as easily tunable high-luminescent organic materials. The impact of the nitrogen-boron-hydroxy (N-BOH) unit in the azaborines was investigated by comparison with their N-carbonyl analogs. Insertion of the N-B(OH)-C unit into heteroaromatic polycyclic compounds resulted in strong visible absorption and sharp fluorescence with efficient quantum yields.
