Identification of molecular regulators of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) initiation and progression is not well understood. We chemically induced HCC in male Wistar rats by administration of diethyl nitrosamine (DEN) and 2-acetylaminofluorene (2-AFF). Using 2D-electrophoresis and MALDI-TOF-MS/MS analyses, we characterized differentially expressed proteins in liver tissues at early stage of HCC progression.

The authors report the case of a patient who presented with small bowel obstruction while awaiting liver transplant for Child-Pugh class C cirrhosis. He underwent emergency liver transplant with resection of the small bowel after the obstruction did not improve with conservative management. The authors believe this is the first case of successful emergency liver transplant with resection of the small bowel in a patient with decompensated Child-Pugh class C liver cirrhosis and strangulated umbilical hernia.

Background: The need for routine use of preoperative biliary drainage (PBD) for major liver resection in jaundiced patients has recently been questioned.

Methods: We present our experience of 22 consecutive patients with hilar biliary obstruction who underwent major liver resection without PBD between January 2007 and January 2011.

Results: Twenty-two patients with hilar biliary obstruction underwent major liver resection without PBD over a 4-year period; nineteen had malignant and 3 benign hilar strictures.
