New targeted therapies have revolutionized the treatment landscape in CLL. Biological features, patient characteristics and preferences and the safety profile of each treatment option should be taken into consideration for making the optimal treatment choice. This consensus practice statement on CLL treatment was developed by a group of Greek experts in CLL based on the available evidence for both first-line treatment and the relapsed/refractory setting.

The prognostic impact of additional cytogenetic aberrations and molecular abnormalities (such as MDS-related mutations, mutations in myeloid genes and the mutations) in patients with - and/or -ITD-mutated AML remains elusive. This retrospective, multicentre study of real-world data aimed to investigate the impact of these mutations and cytogenetic abnormalities on the prognosis of patients with - and/or -ITD-mutated AML, treated with intensive chemotherapy. In a cohort of 161 patients, the only parameters identified to affect the outcomes (EFS and OS) were the age of the patient, primary refractory disease, the presence of a mutation and the use of allogenic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) within the first complete remission.

Iron regulatory protein 2 (IRP2), a post-transcriptional regulator of cellular iron metabolism has been associated with susceptibility to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Resistive breathing (RB) is the hallmark of the pathophysiology of obstructive airway diseases, especially during exacerbations, where increased mechanical stress is imposed on the lung. We have previously shown that RB, through tracheal banding, mimicking severe airway obstruction, induces pulmonary inflammation and injury in previously healthy mice.

Twenty years after the conceptual revolution that occurred in the millennium turnaround upon the introduction of PET/CT in lymphoma staging, restaging, and prognostication, a number of new parameters for PET reading have been proposed: (1) the shift from a qualitative to a semi-quantitative reading for PET reporting, (2) an international consensus on these novel interpretation keys, (3) a standardized and agreed procedure to measure the total metabolic tumour volume (TMTV), and (4) the proposition of new indexes to portray the tumour spread: (D-Max and Total Lesion Surface -TLS). These proved to be very powerful prognosticators, able to revolutionize the traditional Ann Arbor four-stage lymphoma staging. During the 17° Lugano meeting on lymphoma, one main question was asked to experts attending a closed workshop dedicated to new metrics for lymphoma diagnosis, staging, restaging, and prognostication: "Should the traditional 4-stage anatomic staging system be simplified to a more clinically relevant 2-stage system (e.

COPD is a major healthcare problem and cause of mortality worldwide. COPD patients at increased mortality risk are those who are more symptomatic, have lower lung function and lower diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide, decreased exercise capacity, belong to the emphysematous phenotype and those who have concomitant bronchiectasis. Mortality risk seems to be greater in patients who experience COPD exacerbations and in those who suffer from concomitant cardiovascular and/or metabolic diseases.

Article Synopsis
  • Predominantly antibody deficiencies (PAD) are the most common type of immune problems in people, but it's not well-known how many people have them in Greece.
  • A study was done on 153 patients to learn more about these deficiencies, and they found different types of PAD among the patients.
  • The study showed that it often took a long time (about 9 years) for people to be diagnosed with PAD after they first noticed symptoms, and many of the patients had more serious health issues like infections and even cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • A study evaluated the antibody response (AR) in 54 hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) recipients after receiving the BNT162b2 vaccine, showing an initial AR positivity rate of 80.8% at one month, which slightly decreased to 85.7% at three months.
  • Among the cohort, a significant number of participants achieved high antibody titers at both measurement points, but a noted decline in titers occurred from one month to three months post-vaccination.
  • Negative factors impacting AR included pre-treatment conditions like hypogammaglobulinemia and specific medications like anti-CD20 antibodies, suggesting HSCT patients can benefit from vaccination around six months post-transplant even in the

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) have a significantly heightened risk of developing other malignancies (OMs), with a study tracking nearly 20,000 CLL patients revealing 3,513 OMs diagnosed over 129,254 years of follow-up.
  • The study found that treatment with fludarabine and cyclophosphamide increased the likelihood of developing myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML), while non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) and prostate cancer were common solid tumors in treated patients.
  • Importantly, patients with CLL who developed OMs had lower overall survival rates, especially those diagnosed with AML and MDS, highlighting that C

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a very common liver disease associated with obesity, unhealthy diet, and lack of physical exercise. Short-term aerobic or resistance exercise has been shown to result in reduced liver fat in patients with NAFLD; however, the impact of the combination of these types of exercise has received less attention. This study investigated the effect of a short-term (7 days) concurrent exercise training program performed daily on liver steatosis indices, as well as the glycemic and lipidemic profile of overweight/obese sedentary volunteers.

Introduction: Resistive breathing (RB) is characterized by forceful contractions of the inspiratory muscles, mainly the diaphragm, resulting in large negative intrathoracic pressure and mechanical stress imposed on the lung. We have shown that RB induces lung injury in healthy animals. Whether RB exerts additional injurious effects when added to pulmonary or extrapulmonary lung injury is unknown.

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma's (NHL) incidence is rising over time, and B cell lymphomas comprise the majority of lymphomas. The phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/v-akt murine thymoma viral oncogene homologue 1 (Akt)/mammalian target of the rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway plays a critical role in a variety of cellular processes, such as cell proliferation and survival. Its role in lymphomagenesis is confirmed in many different types of B cell lymphomas.

The long-term survival of Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) patients treated according to the current standard of care is excellent. Combined-modality schedules (ABVD plus radiotherapy) in early-stage disease, along with treatment intensity adaptation to early metabolic response assessed by PET/CT in advanced stage HL, have been the cornerstones of risk stratification and treatment decision-making, minimizing treatment-related complications while keeping efficacy. Nevertheless, a non-negligible number of patients are primary refractory or relapse after front-line treatment.

  • Scientists found that a gene called ZNF217 often has mutations in a type of cancer called primary mediastinal B cell lymphoma (PMBCL).
  • In 33% of the patients studied, these mutations changed how certain genes worked, especially those related to inflammation and immune responses.
  • When they removed ZNF217 in experiments, it messed up how cells were supposed to behave and develop, showing that ZNF217 helps control gene activity and cell growth in B cells.
