We report vibrationally resolved threshold photoelectron spectra of several sulfur-containing reactive intermediates. This includes the organosulfur radicals CHS, CHS, CHSH, CHS, and SH, which are relevant in atmospheric chemistry and in astrochemical settings. A detailed reaction network is proposed for the pyrolysis and desulfurization of hexyl sulfide in the presence or absence of both supercritical water (SCW) and hexadecane, but without any added H2 or catalyst, for T = 400-450 °C. The new kinetic model is developed using the Reaction Mechanism Generator (RMG) software where most of the rate coefficients are derived from quantum chemical calculations. We previously reported that pentane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are major products of hexyl sulfide desulfurization in SCW, but not in the anhydrous pyrolysis of hexyl sulfide.

In recent years, predictions of product branching for reactions of consequence to both combustion and atmospheric chemistry have outpaced validating experiments. An apparatus is described that aims to fill this void by combining several well-known experimental techniques into one: flash photolysis for radical generation, multiple-pass laser absorption spectrometry (LAS) for overall kinetics measurements, and time-resolved photoionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PI TOF-MS) for product branching quantification. The sensitivity of both the LAS and PI TOF-MS detection techniques is shown to be suitable for experiments with initial photolytically generated radical concentrations of ∼1 × 10 molecules cm.

The thermal decomposition of ethanethiol was studied using a 1 mm × 2 cm pulsed silicon carbide microtubular reactor, CHCHSH + Δ → Products. Unlike previous studies these experiments were able to identify the initial ethanethiol decomposition products. Ethanethiol was entrained in either an Ar or a He carrier gas, passed through a heated (300-1700 K) SiC microtubular reactor (roughly ≤100 μs residence time) and exited into a vacuum chamber.

A Chirped-Pulse millimeter-Wave (CPmmW) spectrometer is applied to the study of chemical reaction products that result from pyrolysis in a Chen nozzle heated to 1000-1800 K. Millimeter-wave rotational spectroscopy unambiguously determines, for each polar reaction product, the species, the conformers, relative concentrations, conversion percentage from precursor to each product, and, in some cases, vibrational state population distributions. A chirped-pulse spectrometer can, within the frequency range of a single chirp, sample spectral regions of up to ∼10 GHz and simultaneously detect many reaction products.

We have used a heated 2 cm × 1 mm SiC microtubular (μtubular) reactor to decompose acetaldehyde: CH(3)CHO + Δ → products. Thermal decomposition is followed at pressures of 75-150 Torr and at temperatures up to 1675 K, conditions that correspond to residence times of roughly 50-100 μs in the μtubular reactor. The acetaldehyde decomposition products are identified by two independent techniques: vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectroscopy (PIMS) and infrared (IR) absorption spectroscopy after isolation in a cryogenic matrix.

We have demonstrated in both the human serotonin transporter gene (5HTT) and the dopamine transporter gene (DAT1) that specific polymorphic variants termed Variable Number Tandem Repeats (VNTRs), which correlate with predisposition to a number of neurological and psychiatric disorders, act as transcriptional regulatory domains. We have demonstrated that these domains can act as both tissue-specific and stimulus-inducible regulators of gene expression. As such they can act to be mechanistically associated with the progression or initiation of a behavioural disorder by altering the level of transporter mRNA, which in turn regulates the concentration of transporter in specific cells or in response to a challenge; chemical, environmental or physiological.

We have generated mouse transgenic lines using yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) technology which demonstrate expression from the human NK1 receptor (NK1R) locus. We introduced a 380 kb fragment encompassing the human NK1R gene and flanking regions which we hoped would recapitulate the expected endogenous expression of the human gene. To visualise this expression the NK1 locus co-expresses the green fluorescence protein gene (GFP) under the control of an internal ribosome entry site (IRES) sequence.

Early-arriving photons of 100-fs laser pulses transmitted through highly scattering media have been detected by a streak camera. Because of their partial spatial coherence, they are affected by diffraction from small hidden discontinuities.
