Melatonin and Epilepsy.

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disease with recurrent seizures. Its incidence, the social and psychological aspects of epilepsy-associated stigmatization in society, the medical risk of severe seizures, and the challenges in treatment confirm its medical and social significance. The pathogenesis of the diseases is associated with abnormal activity of a population of neurons due to various mechanisms, the most frequent being oxidative stress, glutamate excitotoxicity, and mitochondrial dysfunction.

Spontaneous Clearance of Chronic HCV: The Key Ending Left in the Dark.

Background: Hepatitis C is the second leading cause of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Although the discovery of direct-acting agents made the disease curable, HCV elimination can be achieved solely by the host's immunologic arsenal.

Case Report: We report the case of a 29-year-old woman with chronic hepatitis C infection - elevated transaminases, positive serology.

[The polymorphism of DNA repair genes XRCC1, XRCC3 and the level of chromosomal aberrations in the Uranium workers].

Association between the polymorphism of DNA repair genes XRCC1 Arg399ln and XRCC3 Thr241Met and the frequency of chromosomal aberrations in the uranium workers was studied. The Gln/Gln genotype of gene XRCC1 was associated with a significant increase in the number of chromosomal aberrations as compared to the corresponding homozygous wild type Arg/Arg (p < 0.05).

[Association of genetic polymorphism in GSTM1 and GSTT1 with the frequency of chromosomal aberrations in the uranium workers].

Association between genetic polymorphism in GSTM1 and GSTT1 and frequency of chromosomal aberrations in the workers occupationally exposed to uranium during 1-25 years in Tselinniy mining/milling complex in the North Kazakhstan was investigated. It was found that the frequency of chromosomal aberrations in uranium workers was significantly higher than in matched control, being correlated with the duration of exposure. No association between frequency of chromosomal aberrations and polymorphism for each gene (GSTM1 and GSTT1) was observed, whereas frequency of chromosomal aberrations in the homozygous carriers of null alleles of both GSTM1 and GSTT1 genes was higher than in the homozygous carriers of normal alleles.

[Changes in lower urinary tract function in children with hyperactive urinary bladder treated with combined therapy].

Low clinical efficacy of M-cholinolytics remains a serious problem in conservative therapy of hyperactive bladder (HB). To improve treatment outcomes, combined therapy (pikamilon plus driptan) was tried in 22 boys and 25 girls aged 7 to 14 years. The children were examined with uroflowmetry, cystometry.

[Diagnostic value of several immunity parameters in gestoses].

Gestosis is a grave complication of pregnancy. Assessment of its severity in various pregnancy terms is important for making decision about preterm delivery and predicting the outcome of pregnancy. The authors consider that such immunological tests as measurement of circulating immune complexes, NBT test, and cytological index of activity are reliable indicators of the severity of gestosis, which can be used for predicting the condition and its development.

[A rare case of an adenomatoid mesothelioma of the fallopian tube combined with ovarian stromal hyperplasia and hyperthecosis, endometrial adenocarcinoma and endometriosis interna].

Adenomatoid mesothelioma is a rare benign tumor, most commonly located in the uterine corpus and fallopian tubes in the women during the reproductive years. It usually occurs occasionally and there are no specific symptoms. A case is presented of an adenomatoid tumor of the fallopian tube, associated with many other pathological findings of the genital tract.

[Changes of immunosorption properties in the blood and its components at various times after UV-irradiation].

Immunosorption activity in reference to antirhesus antibodies, of UV-irradiated Rh-positive preserved blood as well as of red blood cell pack and leucocytic-thrombocytic suspension prepared from this blood, was studied in varying terms after irradiation. The whole blood and red blood cell pack immunosorption activity significantly increased immediately after irradiation. The effect lasted during two days.

[The development of the epidemic process and the formation of humoral immunity to the hepatitis A virus in adolescent collectives].

Additional observation on the formation of humoral immunity to hepatitis A virus has been carried out in 2,375 adolescents aged 15-17 years and belonging to 12 groups at 3 areas of the USSR. This observation has shown that in the presence of a high level of the immune stratum the spread of infection occurs, as a rule, outside the group under observation. Besides, as revealed in this study, the risk of seroconversion and the loss of specific antibodies are, respectively, directly and inversely related to the level of the immune stratum in the group.

[The activation of the immunosorptive properties of blood during its UV irradiation at therapeutic doses].

UV irradiation of donor rhesus-positive blood in apparatus, applied in Soviet hospitals for autotransfusion of UV-irradiated blood produces a 2-fold increase of the blood capacity to bind antirhesus antibodies in blood or serum from sensibilized women. The above data can be used for increase in therapeutic effect of blood exchange transfusion in children with rhesus-conflict hemolytic disease.

Endorectal ultrasound examination, which has been developed mainly by Japanese and Danish scientists is being applied at I. Clinical Hospital "Dr. Kiril Khavezov" in Sofia since 1984.

[The conservative surgical treatment of kidney tumors].

Seven cases are reported of patients with renal tumors in whom organ-preserving operations were performed. Two patients had only one kidney, the contralateral had been removed in the past. They had only partial resection of one third of the kidney performed.

[Liver involvement in patients with malignant lymphomas].

The clinical and histomorphologic characteristics of the liver lesions in patients with Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas were analyzed. The pathogenic importance of the specific lymphoma infiltration of the liver, the toxic drug and viral action is discussed. Rare cases of a combination of lymphoma metaplasia with cancers in other organs and jaundice are discussed.
