Evidence is presented indicating the differences in the polymorphism of microsatellite (MCS) repeats in DNA of somatic tissues in the offspring of BALB/c mice of different sex born from preconceptionally irradiated males or females. Brother-sister groups of the offspring born by non-irradiated parental pairs were compared with the offspring obtained after the irradiation of one parent in the same pairs. The number of MCS repeats in DNA of somatic tissues of the offspring from irradiated males or females was compared by a polymerase chain reaction using an arbitrary primer.

"GelAnalyzer" software, which is used to identify and correctly compare DNA fingerprints consisting of a large number of discrete bands, has been developed by the project to study the quantitative changes in DNA polymorphism patterns in animals and humans exposed to gamma radiation. The actual capabilities of this program are much broader and include the possibility to analyze the images of any multicomponent gels containing fragments of DNA, RNA, and proteins. Aim: Study of the apoptogenic effect of Corynebacterium diphtheriae toxigenic strains on mice peritoneal macrophages in vitro.

Materials And Methods: Evaluation ofapoptosis induced by Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Corynebacterium pseudodiphtheriticum, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes strains was performed by characteristic morphological changes in macrophages in smears stained by azure eosin by Romanovsky-Giemsa.

Results: Apoptogenic activity of diphtheria infectious agent was established to be determined by diphtheria exotoxin at early (after 1 hour) and surface structures and pathogenicity enzymes at later (3 hours) stages of effect.

Relationships of the T- and B-components of adaptive immunity and the psychophysiological status were studied in 14 volunteers for the experiment with 5-d dry immersion (DI) w/o countermeasures. Comparison of frequency of deviations in immunity parameters of psychologically different subjects demonstrated the highest frequency in non-anxious and extravert individuals on day-5 in DI. These differences in immune reactions as a function of psychological type and temperament point to existence of a neuroimmune typology and, therefore, the necessity of concurrent immunologic and psychological investigations in order to develop separate measures of rehabilitation from and prevention of stress in people with polar psychological status.

The level of genome instability (GI) was studied in the progeny of female mice exposed in the preconceptional period to radiation doses of 0.5, 1, and 2 Gy in comparison to that in the progeny of the same parent pairs born before irradiation of the females. Six male volunteers (aged 25 to 40 years) were subjects in all-round psychophysiological, hormonal and immunological studies before, in and after 105-day isolation and confinement. Blood was drawn and the 16-factorial Cattell personality inventory was filled out every 30 days. Before, in and after the experiment with 105-day isolation and confinement, 6 male volunteers from 25 to 40 years of age rationed NaCl and performed integral impedancimetric, psychological and hormonal investigations. The changes in NADPH activity was studied in the roots of 3-4-day-old etiolated pea (cultivar Aksaiskii usatyi) seedlings depending on plant inoculation with Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. viceae (strain CIAM 1026), adverse environmental factors (low temperature and high dose of a mineral nitrogen fertilizer), chemical substances (sodium nitroprusside and methyl viologen, or paraquat), and a biotic factor--the bacterium Escherichia coli (strain XL-1 Blue). A literature review synthesizes the data on physiological mechanisms of the influence of high doses of mineral nitrogen (nitrates and ammonium) on the formation and functioning of legume-rhizobium symbiosis. The participation of phytohormonal and phenolic metabolism and active forms of oxygen and nitrogen in the symbiosis is highlighted. Effects of desmopressin, a synthetic analog of antidiuretic hormone (ADH), on water-salt metabolism and orthostatic tolerance were evaluated in human subjects during 24-hr HDT (-15 degrees). Consumption of the preparation was found to dampen losses in total body and extracellular liquids and to slow down diuresis as well as establishment of a positive water balance as compared with control series without ADH. In addition, tolerance of the standard standing test improved noticeably.

Results of experimental study of regulatory effect of nutrophilokines induced by Yersinia pestis EV strain on population and subpopulation repertoire of lymphocytes and their functional activity during immune response against plague infection are presented. It was established that these neutrophilokines stimulate CD4+ and suppress CD8+ lymphocytes. Helper effect of neutrophilokines on functional activity of lymphocytes was more pronounced during secondary than during primary immune response.

Clinical and immunological studies were conducted in 62 patients with infiltrative pulmonary tuberculosis and 53 with disseminated one. As drug resistance and viability of mycobacteria increased, an immune response was found to develop as the humoral type and cellular immunity was suppressed. A more marked reduction in the activity of T helper cells type 1 of an immune response and the neutrophilic granulocytic system was revealed in patients with disseminated pulmonary tuberculosis.

In an experiment with rats system and intracellular energy metabolism was assessed by cell reactions to chronic injection of beta-guanidine propionic acid (beta-GPA) stimulating AMP-dependent protein kinase (AMPK). Suspension was shown to inhibit the succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activity, reduce glycogen in both types of muscle fibers, and stimulate the activity of alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase (alpha-GPDH) in fast fibers. Supplementing the rat chow with beta-GPA did not modify these parameters during suspension; however, the blood urea level increased considerably in the suspended and control rats.

Biochemical and immunobiologic characteristics of fractions of neutrophilokines during primary and secondary immune response against plague infection are presented. Fractions were obtained using gel chromatography from neutrophilokines complex induced by vaccine strain of Yersinia pestis. It was revealed that fractions of neutrophilokines regulate IL-2 synthesis by Th1-helpers, IL-4 and IL-5 synthesis by Th2-helpers and also expression of IL-2 receptors by immunocompetent cells.

The action of sodium nitroprusside, a nitric oxide donor, and other nitrogen compounds (KNO3, KNO2, and (NH4)2SO4) on adhesion and penetration of nodule bacteria into root tissues of etiolated pea seedlings was studied. Only nitroprusside displayed a clearly negative effect on rhizobium adhesion and penetration and seedling growth. This effect was not observed with other nitrogen compounds even at high (20 mM) concentrations.

This review discusses the real prospects of using the potential of microorganisms for bioremediation of PCB-polluted natural environments (soil, sediments, and wastewater sludge) under anaerobic and aerobic conditions. A detailed analysis of the research conditions of original works has shown that the efficiency of bioremediation of PCB-polluted objects strongly depends on the character and degree of pollution. In the case of aerobic bioremediation, the best results were obtained with moderately polluted soils and sediments (20 to 700 PCB/kg), in which the level of pollution decreased by 40-75%.

A possible physiological mechanism of legume-Rhizobium symbiosis, consisting in regulation of the intensity of oxidation processes by the microsymbiont in response to infection with Rhizobium, was analyzed using our own and published data. The results used in the analysis included data on the content of reactive oxygen species (O2*-, and H2O2), activity of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase), and intensity of lipid peroxidation proceeding with the involvement of lipophilic phenolic compounds of the microsymbiont.
