Ways for increasing the anthrax treatment efficacy by combined use of antibiotics, toxin neutralizing, immunomodulating, symptomatic and pathogenetic agents are considered. The dynamics of the infection development was studied on rabbits by the microbiological, cytochemical, biochemical and cytomorphologic criteria. The efficacy of monoantibacterial and complex schemes of the etiopathogenetic therapy of the disease at the early and late stages (phases) of the infection generalization was estimated.

The paper discusses the preliminary findings on alpha-feto-protein (AFP) treatment of 58 patients with stage III-IV malignancies of different localizations. No influence on neoplastic processes was registered in poorly differentiated cell tumors, nor were any immunological mechanisms of antitumor action triggered on. However, in moderately- and well-differentiated cell tumors, several foci of acute immune inflammation were induced.

The virological, morphological, molecular biological and immunochemical study of the infective agent isolated from the patient with the symptoms of atypical pneumonia, hospitalized in the infectious department of the clinical hospital in Blagoveshchensk, was carried out. Thus the fact of the appearance of SARS virus on the territory of Russia was proved. The isolated infective agent, identified as coronavirus strain CoD, was partly characterized and deposited to the virus collection of the Center of Special Laboratory Diagnostics and Treatment of Quarantine and Exotic Infectious Diseases.

Efficacy of drug therapy of Omsk hemorrhagic fever (OHF) was tested experimentally using cell culture and laboratory animals infected with the OHF virus strain Ondatra. Screening tests showed that high concentrations of Virazol or interferon inducers Larifan and Rifastin caused moderately pronounced suppression of virus reproduction in cell culture. Realdiron was found to be a high-efficacy preparation causing complete inhibition of virus reproduction in cell.

The relative quantities of basic populations and subpopulations of lymphocytes and their response to tumor-associated antigens were estimated in the peripheral blood patients with tuberculosis and malignant neoplasms of the lung. In both diseases, the changes in the count of immunocompetent cells are similar and they characterize immunodeficiency typical of these conditions. A response to tumor-associated antigens was found only in patients with lung cancer, the pattern of this response depending on the grade of a tumor.

The results of the isolation and identification of the causative agent of a haemorrhagic fever outbreak in the Stavropol Territory are presented. The virus isolated from blood of haemorrhagic fever patients by virological methods was identified in serological and molecular tests as Crimean haemorrhagic fever virus. This epidemiological analysis testify to increased activity of the natural focus of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever in this area due to a number of natural and other factors leading to intensification of its epidemic realization.

The modelling of glandular plague and selection of the conditions for estimating the efficacy of new antibacterials for the treatment of the infection were performed on hamadryads (baboons). The experiments showed that the average LD50 of the culture of a highly virulent strain of Yersinia pestis on its subcutaneous administration to the animals was 2089 viable microbes. In 18 per cent of the episodes the experimental glandular plague in the animals was complicated by secondary plague pneumonia.

Enzyme immunoassay of the titer of antituberculosis antibodies (ATAb) from patients with pulmonary tuberculosis has indicated that their levels depend on the different characteristics of a specific process: the form of active tuberculosis, the extent of changes in the lung tissue, the presence of destruction and bacterial isolation, the type of specific inflammatory reaction, and the duration of the treatment performed. Whether there was a correlation of ATAb titers with skin tuberculin sensitivity the level was studied by the Mantoux test using 2 TE PPD-L. The time course of changes in ATAb titers in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis during the routine chemotherapy was analyzed.

High therapeutic efficacy of aminoglycosides, quinolones, cephalosporins and rifampicins was demonstrated in experiments performed on monkeys, infected aerogenically by Yersinia pestis 1300. Antibacterials inhibited Y. pestis cells reproduction in the infected animals organisms evaluated by dynamics of bacterial cells isolated from the blood and fauces of the animals.

The comparative study of the specimens of the morphological elements of exanthema obtained from 8 children with the clinical diagnosis of secondary exogenic vaccinia, dried smallpox vaccine and the cultures of other orthopoxviruses (rabbit pox, monkey pox and buffalo pox viruses) was made. The isolation and identification of the causative agents from the specimens was carried out with the use of modern virological, electron microscopic and molecular methods. The study proved the fact that 8 children had orthopoxvirus infection with its causative agent identified as vaccinia virus.

Spectrometry has been employed to assess the levels of collagenase, catepsin D, trypsin-like proteinases and their inhibitors as well as bone acid and alkaline phosphatase both in the center and along the periphery of giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) and chondrosarcoma. The levels of collagenase, trypsin-like proteinases and their inhibitors in the center of chondrosarcoma were much higher while those of alkaline phosphatase--lower than along tumor periphery. The catepsin D and acid phosphatase concentrations of the center and periphery of chondrosarcoma were similar.

Data on the isolation of Listeria spp. cultures on the territory of Ukraine, the frequency of Listeria contamination of alimentary raw materials and foodstuffs, the level of listeriosis morbidity, the clinical forms of the manifestation of this disease, as well as the occurrence of asymptomatic carriership among clinically healthy persons of epidemiologically significant professions, are given. The results of the study of the biological properties of 73 strains of Listeria spp.

The results of the epidemiological analysis of the outbreak of hemorrhagic fever which was caused by Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus and occurred during the period of July 3-19, 1999, in the Oblivskaya district of Rostov Province are presented. The specific epidemiological features of the outbreak have been determined. The possible versions of the appearance of the focus of infection and the role of Ixodes ticks in the circulation of the infective agent are discussed.

The results of the molecular biological detection of the etiologic agent of hemorrhagic fever in Rostov Province are presented. The role of the causative agents of Astrakhan rickettsial fever, hemorrhagic fever with the renal syndrome, Q fever, leptospirosis and listeriosis has been excluded by means of such immunochemical reactions as the direct and indirect immunofluorescent tests, the solid-phase immunoenzyme assay, the complement fixation test and the agglutination test. The relationship between the cases of hemorrhagic fever in the focus of the outbreak and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus has been demonstrated due to the use of the polymerase chain reaction with preliminary reverse transcription.

Effects, both specific and non-specific, were analysed of ionizing radiation in a comparative evaluation of medical sequels of the Chernobyl disaster and of the Semipalatinsk Range nuclear test. A hypothesis is advanced assuming that development of all major bodily morbid conditions is directly related to the dysfunction of certain complex of organs, the thyroid gland in the first place, the thymus gland known to be a central organ of systemic immunogenesis. A breach in the thymus link triggers harmful cascade reactions of neuroimmunoendocrinological regulation, appeared to be responsible for the pathogenesis of practically all pathologies disclosed.

In this review the data on the presence of associations between immunogenetic markers and the development of HIV infection are presented. Special attention is given to spatial relationships of genetic determinants, responsible for the synthesis of the components of the complement system on one hand and the genes controlling resistance to the causative agents of opportunistic infections and malignant growth on the other hand. Suggestion is made on close relationship between the specific features of the course of HIV infection and the genetic control, responsible for the synthesis of complement components, in particular the genes making up the HLA system.
