Chronic venous disease of the lower limbs is a highly prevalent pathology and endovenous thermoablation is the technique of choice for treatment of insufficient saphenous veins. However, there is still controversy about the best management for varicose tributaries. This article reports a case of outpatient treatment of reflux of the small saphenous vein and tributary veins in a 52-year-old female patient with post-thrombotic syndrome complaining of pain and edema in the right lower limb.

The objective of this systematic review (SR) with meta-analysis (MA) was to identify the dietary patterns of the population, regarding ethnicity and gender, and their association with the metabolic syndrome and its risk factors (MetS-RF). The literature search was performed using Medline, Scopus, Ebsco, SciELO, and BVS databases. Studies with adult participants that identified dietary patterns associated with MetS-RF were included.

This research consolidates our group's advances in developing a therapeutic dressing with innovative enzymatic debridement, focusing on the physicochemical and in vitro biological properties of papain immobilized in wet oxidized bacterial cellulose (OxBC-Papain) dressing. OxBC membranes were produced with oxidized with NaIO, and papain was immobilized on them. They were characterized in terms of enzyme stability (over 100 days), absorption capacity, water vapor transmission (WVT), hemocompatibility, cytotoxicity, and cell adhesion.

This cross-sectional study assessed data from Brazil's 2019 National Student Health Survey to investigate associations between cyberbullying and sociodemographic, family, mental health, and behavioural factors among Brazilian schoolchildren. Multivariate analysis by Poisson regression found 13.2% prevalence of cyberbullying, which was higher among adolescents who felt nobody cared about them (PR=1.

The objective was to analyze the spatial distribution of pregnancy in children under 14 years and six months by Brazilian region and municipality and sociodemographic and health characteristics of pregnant women and live births. Ecological study analyzing the Live Birth Information System (SINASC) from 2011 to 2021 in three age groups (< 14 years and six months, 15-19 years, and 20 years and above) by demographic and birth variables. We applied the Global and Local Moran.

The local field potential (LFP) is as a measure of the combined activity of neurons within a region of brain tissue. While biophysical modeling schemes for LFP in cortical circuits are well established, there is a paramount lack of understanding regarding the LFP properties along the states assumed in cortical circuits over long periods. Here we use a symbolic information approach to determine the statistical complexity based on Jensen disequilibrium measure and Shannon entropy of LFP data recorded from the primary visual cortex (V1) of urethane-anesthetized rats and freely moving mice.

Article Synopsis
  • Breast and cervical cancer pose significant public health challenges, with advances in prevention, early detection, and treatment crucial for reducing incidence and mortality rates.
  • The study analyzed trends in mammography and Papanicolaou test coverage among women in Brazilian state capitals from 2007 to 2023, using data from a national telephone survey and statistical models to assess changes over time.
  • Results showed stable mammography rates but a decline in Papanicolaou test coverage, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing the need for improved access and awareness for women's health screenings.

Background: Prinflammatory extracellular chromatin from neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) and other cellular sources is found in COVID-19 patients and may promote pathology. We determined whether pulmonary administration of the endonuclease dornase alfa reduced systemic inflammation by clearing extracellular chromatin.

Methods: Eligible patients were randomized (3:1) to the best available care including dexamethasone (R-BAC) or to BAC with twice-daily nebulized dornase alfa (R-BAC + DA) for seven days or until discharge.

Background: 3D neural network dose predictions are useful for automating brachytherapy (BT) treatment planning for cervical cancer. Cervical BT can be delivered with numerous applicators, which necessitates developing models that generalize to multiple applicator types. The variability and scarcity of data for any given applicator type poses challenges for deep learning.

The health impacts of intimate partner violence against women and childhood sexual abuse are not fully understood. Here we conducted a systematic review by comprehensively searching seven electronic databases for literature on intimate partner violence-associated and childhood sexual abuse-associated health effects. Following the burden of proof methodology, we evaluated the evidence strength linking intimate partner violence and/or childhood sexual abuse to health outcomes supported by at least three studies.

Recent advances in wearable ultrasound technologies have demonstrated the potential for hands-free data acquisition, but technical barriers remain as these probes require wire connections, can lose track of moving targets and create data-interpretation challenges. Here we report a fully integrated autonomous wearable ultrasonic-system-on-patch (USoP). A miniaturized flexible control circuit is designed to interface with an ultrasound transducer array for signal pre-conditioning and wireless data communication.

Attribution-based explanations are popular in computer vision but of limited use for fine-grained classification problems typical of expert domains, where classes differ by subtle details. In these domains, users also seek understanding of "why" a class was chosen and "why not" an alternative class. A new GenerAlized expLanatiOn fRamEwork (GALORE) is proposed to satisfy all these requirements, by unifying attributive explanations with explanations of two other types.

Background: The processing of food can cause changes that turn them into risk factors for chronic diseases. A higher degree of food processing is associated with the development of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including the metabolic syndrome (MetS). The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption and the prevalence of MetS and its risk factors, focusing on a population group especially subjected to precarious living conditions and food insecurity.

The factors that influence survival during severe infection are unclear. Extracellular chromatin drives pathology, but the mechanisms enabling its accumulation remain elusive. Here, we show that in murine sepsis models, splenocyte death interferes with chromatin clearance through the release of the DNase I inhibitor actin.

Titanium is usually used in the manufacturing of metal implants due to its biocompatibility and high resistance to corrosion. A structural and functional connection between the living bone and the surface of the implant, a process called osseointegration, is mandatory for avoiding prolonged healing, infections, and tissue loss. Therefore, osseointegration is crucial for the success of the implantation procedure.
