Neighborhoods or residential environments have physical and social attributes which may contribute to inequalities in the overweight and obesity pandemic. We examined the longitudinal associations of baseline neighborhood-level income and racial residential segregation (using the Gi* statistic: low, medium, high) with changes in body mass index (BMI in kg/m), using geocoded data from 1821 civil servants in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, followed-up for approximately 13 years (baseline wave 1: 1999, wave 2: 2001-2002, wave 3: 2006-2007, wave 4: 2012-2013). Linear mixed effects models using BMI measured in all four study waves were performed, accounting for gender, race, length of residence, education and time-dependent age, and per capita family income.

The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants has changed transmission rates and immune evasion, possibly impacting the severity. This study aims to investigate the impact of variants on clinical outcomes in southern Brazil.

The Amazon is potentially rich in actinobacteria; however, almost no research studies exist. Thus, we present a study of the occurrence and antifungal potential of actinobacteria from the rhizosphere of , a native South American plant and one that is economically useful in the whole of the Amazon.

Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) are a group of developing countries with shared economic, healthcare, and scientific interests. These countries navigate multiple syndemics, and the COVID-19 pandemic placed severe strain on already burdened BRICS' healthcare systems, hampering effective pandemic interventions. Genomic surveillance and molecular epidemiology remain indispensable tools for facilitating informed pandemic intervention.

Programmed cell death plays a relevant role in the pathogenesis of visceral Leishmaniasis. Apoptosis selects suitable parasites, regulating parasite density, whereas autophagy eliminates pathogens. This study aimed to assess the inflammation and apoptosis in inflammatory cells and presents a unique description of the presence of autophagic and apoptotic Leishmania amastigotes in naturally Leishmania-infected dogs.

However, in elastosis-related diseases such as actinic cheilitis (AC) and lower lip squamous cell carcinoma (LLSCC), this interaction remains unknown. We investigated the presence of intact and degranulated mast cells in AC and LLSCC.

Analyzing 79 patients, we found distinct gene expression patterns between acute YF, other viral infections, and the milder YF-17D vaccine infection. We identified a critical role for low-density, immature neutrophils in severe outcomes, marked by the downregulation of genes essential for neutrophil migration and maturation, such as PADI4, CSF3R, and ICAM1, in deceased patients.

This study estimated mortality from external causes using the GC redistribution method (GBD-Brazil) and compared it with SIM and estimated data from the GBD-IHME study from 2010 to 2019 in Brazil and its states. The GBD-Brazil GC redistribution algorithm applies previous steps of the GBD-IHME with modifications, using two criteria: proportion of target causes (valid) or reclassification of investigated causes.

Fungal rhinitis in horses is rare, although severe, due to the progressive nasal obstruction. Aspergillus is one of the fungi most often involved in these cases. A 7-year-old Quarter Horse mare weighing 325 kg was admitted with a history of recurrent nasal discharge and bleeding, foul smell, reluctance to exercise, and abortion.

Objective: To systematically review available data regarding adenomatoid hyperplasia of minor salivary glands (AHMSG).
Study Design: Electronic searches were performed in six databases and gray literature. The risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute tool.
Background: The High-Dose Erythropoietin for Asphyxia and Encephalopathy (HEAL) trial for neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) treated with therapeutic hypothermia demonstrated no neurodevelopmental benefit but was associated with a higher rate of serious adverse events (SAEs). Understanding if targeted Epo plasma exposures were achieved in the HEAL trial and if SAEs were associated with higher exposures would help future therapeutic programs of Epo as a candidate neuroprotective treatment.
Methods: Ancillary study of a subset of HEAL neonates who received Epo (1000 U/kg IV on days 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7) and had plasma drug concentrations measured.

Objective: To verify the likelihood of dysphonia in firefighters and its relationship with individual and occupational factors and mental health.
Method: This cross-sectional observational study with 442 firefighters collected data on sociodemographic, occupational, and lifestyle aspects and screening for common mental disorders (CMD). Individuals were divided into two groups: those slightly likely and those moderately/highly likely to have dysphonia, according to the Brazilian Dysphonia Screening Tool.
The ventral midline thalamus, including the reuniens and rhomboid (ReRh) nuclei, connects bidirectionally with the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and hippocampus (Hip), both essential for memory processes. This review compiles and discusses studies on a role for the ReRh nuclei in the system consolidation of memories, also considering their potentially limited participation in memory retrieval or early phases of consolidation. It also examines scientific literature on short- and long-term plasticity in ReRh-mPFC and ReRh-Hip connections, emphasizing plasticity's importance in understanding these nuclei's role in memory.

Purpose: To investigate the risk factors related to decrease in vessel density (VD) observed in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), due to acute increase in intraocular pressure (IOP) by an ophthalmodynamometer (OPD).
Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 42 eyes of participants (22 Controls and 20 POAG patients) that underwent optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) to assess VD in the peripapillary region in three examination sets: primary gaze position (1), 25-degree adduction (2) and 25-degree adduction with OPD compression (3). Individual relationships between IOP levels and changes in the superficial complex VD were evaluated after image processing and exclusion of large retinal vessels.

Metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) have contributed to identifying non-culturable microorganisms and understanding their ecological functions. MAGs offer an advantage in investigating sporulation-associated genes, especially given the difficulty of isolating many species residing in the gut microbiota of multiple hosts. Bacterial sporulation is a key survival mechanism with implications for pathogenicity and biotechnology.
