Background: The ideal intravenous (IV) maintenance and resuscitation fluid for patients undergoing orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) remains unknown. We aimed to determine whether bicarbonate-buffered solution was non-inferior to Plasma-Lyte™ in preventing metabolic acidosis during OLT.
Methods: We conducted a pilot single-center, open-label, randomized trial to compare the physiological effects of intravascular volume maintenance with a bicarbonate-buffered solution vs.
Background: Preoperative screening for iron deficiency is a part of patient blood management protocols. This systematic review, meta-analysis, and meta-regression reviews the association between nonanemic iron deficiency and postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. We aimed to determine whether preoperative screening for nonanemic iron deficiency should be recommended in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

This study aims to report survival outcomes and evaluate these indices in a cohort of patients undergoing liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma in a tertiary Australian centre.
Methods: This retrospective study reviewed data from the Department of Surgery at Austin Health and electronic health records (Cerner corporation).
Background: Surgical approach is the most effective treatment for primary spontaneous pneumothorax. The two most widely adopted surgical methods are mechanical abrasion and apical pleurectomy, in addition to bullectomy. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine which technique is superior in treating primary spontaneous pneumothorax.
