Background: The ideal intravenous (IV) maintenance and resuscitation fluid for patients undergoing orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) remains unknown. We aimed to determine whether bicarbonate-buffered solution was non-inferior to Plasma-Lyte™ in preventing metabolic acidosis during OLT.

Methods: We conducted a pilot single-center, open-label, randomized trial to compare the physiological effects of intravascular volume maintenance with a bicarbonate-buffered solution vs.

Background: Preoperative screening for iron deficiency is a part of patient blood management protocols. This systematic review, meta-analysis, and meta-regression reviews the association between nonanemic iron deficiency and postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. We aimed to determine whether preoperative screening for nonanemic iron deficiency should be recommended in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • Rib fractures are common after chest injuries and can lead to significant health issues, making effective pain management important; the erector spinae nerve block (ESB) has emerged as a less invasive option with a low risk of complications.
  • A review of 37 studies revealed that ESB significantly reduces pain levels by about 40% within the first 24 hours and shows improvements in respiratory function, although respiratory complications were not consistently reported.
  • Overall, the findings suggest that ESB is a safe and effective method for managing pain and improving respiratory outcomes in patients with rib fractures, although more large-scale studies are needed to confirm these results.

Background And Aim: The C-reactive protein to albumin ratio, albumin-bilirubin index and platelet-albumin-bilirubin index have emerged as prognostic scores in hepatocellular carcinoma, although their clinical utility remains unclear, with ongoing investigation in multiple patient populations. This study aims to report survival outcomes and evaluate these indices in a cohort of patients undergoing liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma in a tertiary Australian centre.

Methods: This retrospective study reviewed data from the Department of Surgery at Austin Health and electronic health records (Cerner corporation).

Background: Surgical approach is the most effective treatment for primary spontaneous pneumothorax. The two most widely adopted surgical methods are mechanical abrasion and apical pleurectomy, in addition to bullectomy. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine which technique is superior in treating primary spontaneous pneumothorax.

Two 40-year-old males were admitted to our tertiary hepatology unit with acute hepatitis after presentation with generalized abdominal pain, nausea, and jaundice. There was no history of paracetamol overdose, and common viral and autoimmune causes were excluded through serology. Imaging and liver biopsy were performed with both investigations demonstrating non-specific features of hepatic inflammation.
