Oral cancer (OC), a potentially fatal disease, is a major health concern across the world. It is reported to be the sixth most common cancer in the world with a disappointingly low 5-year survival rate, despite major advances in onco-medicine in the past three decades. The low 5-year-survival rate is associated with late diagnosis of the disease, while OC diagnosed at early stages enjoy a much higher 5-year-survival rate, comparatively.

Background: Dysbiotic gut bacteria engage in the development and progression of severe alcoholic hepatitis (SAH). We aimed to characterize bacterial communities associated with clinical events (CE), identify significant bacteria linked to CE, and define bacterial relationships associated with specific CE and outcomes at baseline and after treatment in SAH.

Methods: We performed 16-s rRNA sequencing on stool samples (n=38) collected at admission and the last follow-up within 90 days in SAH patients (n=26; 12 corticosteroids; 14 granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, [G-CSF]).

Metatarsalgia is a common problem that refers to the tenderness and pain beneath the forefoot. Many metatarsal shortening osteotomies have been described to alleviate metatarsal overload; however, these osteotomies have been associated with a high complication rate of floating toe deformity. We present a case study that describes an innovative technique for the treatment of lesser metatarsalgia that allows for the repositioning of the metatarsal head, using a stable screw fixation designed to minimize the common complication of the floating toe.

The treatment options for osteochondral lesions of the ankle are scarce, and newer modalities are becoming available. We describe a minimally invasive arthroscopic approach with implantation of juvenile particulated allograft to facilitate the growth of true hyaline cartilage in patients with osteochondral lesions of the talus. The purpose of this study was to subjectively review clinical outcomes using the validated Foot and Ankle Outcomes Score in patients who underwent this technique.

Distal tibial malalignment can result from posttraumatic malunion, physeal disturbances, congenital or metabolic diseases, and degenerative arthritis. Malalignment leads to an altered load distribution across the joint leading to early ankle joint arthritis. If a substantial part of the joint is salvageable, ankle fusion or joint replacement is not always the best option.

Article Synopsis
  • - Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) develops from precancerous lesions, influenced by oncogene activation and tumor suppressor gene loss, with Her2/neu being a significant growth factor receptor related to these changes.
  • - A study compared serum and salivary Her2/neu levels among healthy controls, patients with premalignant disorders, and those with OSCC, finding no significant differences in serum but higher salivary levels in OSCC patients.
  • - The findings suggest that salivary Her2/neu could serve as a reliable marker for distinguishing between premalignant and malignant oral conditions, unlike serum levels, highlighting its potential role in early detection.

Background: Root dentine translucency remains the method of choice providing the most accurate results for age estimation. Conventionally, translucency is measured using calipers. In recent times, computer-based methods are proposed, which require the use of custom-built software programs.

Background: As ticagrelor enters into clinical use for acute coronary syndrome, it is important to understand patient/physician behavior in terms of appropriate use, adherence, and event rates.

Methods: The Southern Saskatchewan Ticagrelor Registry is a prospective, observational, multicenter cohort study that identifies consecutive patients started on ticagrelor. We aimed to evaluate both on- and off-label use, identify characteristics of patients who prematurely stop ticagrelor, and describe patient/physician behavior contributing to inappropriate stoppage of this medication.
