Article Synopsis
  • - Green leafy vegetables are important for nutrition but may be contaminated with toxic substances like arsenic, which can affect food safety and health.
  • - The study examines arsenic levels (inorganic, monomethyl, and dimethyl) in various leafy vegetables grown in the polluted Ambagarh Chouki region in Chhattisgarh, India.
  • - Arsenic concentrations were found to vary widely, with the health quotient for inorganic arsenic averaging 2.58, indicating potential health risks for consumers.

Article Synopsis
  • Arsenic is a serious environmental pollutant that contaminates the food chain and poses cancer risks, mainly through contaminated water and food.
  • Various costly chemical methods exist for removing arsenic from soil and water, but phytoremediation offers a more sustainable alternative by using plants to absorb and remove arsenic from contaminated areas.
  • Ongoing research into plants and microbes that can bioaccumulate arsenic holds promise for future large-scale solutions to manage this contamination effectively.

Arsenic is one of the regulated hazard materials in the environment and a persistent pollutant creating environmental, agricultural and health issues and posing a serious risk to humans. In the present review, sources and mobility of As in various compartments of the environment (air, water, soil and sediment) around the World are comprehensively investigated, along with measures of health hazards. Multiple atomic spectrometric approaches have been applied for total and speciation analysis of As chemical species.

Background: There are no major tools that could predict disease severity in COVID-19. The aim of this study is to evaluate if serum galectin-3 levels can identify disease progression in COVID-19.

Methods: Patients that were hospitalized due to COVID-19 between March and June 2020 were included in this cross-sectional prospective study.

Groundwater in Karamık wetland and surroundings, which is one of the important wetlands in Turkey, was examined and the chemical properties and quality of groundwater were determined in the present study. In addition, the possible risks to human health as a result of groundwater usage were investigated along with spatial analyses carried out using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Physicochemical analyses were carried out on 25 samples taken from groundwater.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined COVID-19's effects on children and late adolescents with inflammatory rheumatic diseases (IRD) compared to healthy children.
  • A total of 658 subjects were analyzed, with most showing symptoms but a low hospitalization rate and no deaths.
  • The presence of IRD increased hospitalization and symptomatic infection risks, highlighting the need for close monitoring by pediatric rheumatologists.

Because vaccine hesitancy is a dynamic trait, it is critical to identify and compare the contributing factors at the different stages of a pandemic. The prediction of vaccine decision making and the interpretation of the analytical relationships among variables that encompass public perceptions and attitudes towards the COVID-19 pandemic have been extensively limited to the studies conducted after the administration of the first FDA-approved vaccine in December of 2020. In order to fill the gap in the literature, we used six predictive models and identified the most important factors, via Gini importance measures, that contribute to the prediction of COVID-19 vaccine acceptors and refusers using a nationwide survey that was administered in November 2020, before the widespread use of COVID-19 vaccines.

Background: Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) to albumin ratio (CAR) has been defined as an inflammation-based prognostic marker. We evaluated the association and prognostic value of CRP/albumin ratio in patients with pulmonary embolism (PE).

Methods: A total of 256 patients with acute PE who were hospitalized between March 2016 and December 2020 were retrospectively reviewed.

Objective: We aimed to test the efficiency of CHA2DS2-VASc, CHA2DS2-VASc-HS, R2CHA2DS2-VASc score systems on the prediction of mortality in the patients with COVID-19.

Patients And Methods: The data were collected from 508 hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Comorbidity features including coronary artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, congestive heart failure, hypertension, atrial fibrillation, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, smoking, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cerebrovascular event, cancer status, and renal disease were recorded.

Objective: In this study, we aimed to investigate the prognostic accuracy of the presence of fragmented QRS (fQRS) on baseline electrocardiogram on the adverse outcome in critical patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) with cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Methods: The current study was retrospective designed and included 169 patients who were critically ill with COVID-19 and CVD (mean age of 62±15 years). The patients were grouped into those who died (non-survivor group) and those who survived (survivor group).

Background: Technetium-99m-dimercapto succinic acid (Tc-99m DMSA) scintigraphy is a commonly used imaging modality in children with urological abnormalities. The radiopharmaceuticals, which have the effects of ionising radiation, are used in this method. This study aimed to investigate the impact of the Tc-99m DMSA scan on renal oxidative stress and mononuclear leukocyte (MNL) DNA damage.

Background: Correlations between increased copeptin levels and various cardiovascular diseases have been described. In this study, we aimed to investigate the correlation between increased copeptin levels and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) in rheumatic mitral stenosis (MS).

Methods: Patients with mild/moderate rheumatic MS and sinus rhythm were consecutively recruited from an echocardiography laboratory.

In this study the spatial variation of groundwater quality and the potential health risk situation arising were evaluated determining Water Quality Index (WQI and IWQI) for drinking and irrigation water in Şuhut Plain (Afyonkarahisar, Turkey). A total of 27 groundwater samples were collected from wells in May-2019 and physicochemical analysis results were evaluated. According to analysis results of the water samples, the orders of anion and cations are HCO3>SO4-2>Cl- > CO3-2 and Ca+2 > Mg+2 > Na+>K+, respectively.

Objectives: Multi-system inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a less understood and a rare complication of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). Given the scarce data regarding this novel disease, we aimed to describe the clinical features and outcomes of our patients with MIS-C and to evaluate the associated factors for the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admission.

Methods: The MIS-C patients under 18 years old diagnosed and treated in three referral centers between July 2020 and March 2021 were included.

Objective: Inflammation plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis and clinical outcome of atherosclerosis. Among the various inflammatory factors, antimicrobial peptides, such as alpha-defensins, seem to contribute to the development and progression of atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the plasma levels of human neutrophil peptide-1, -2, and -3 (HNP1-3) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and to assess its relationship with the severity of coronary artery disease.

Behçet's disease (BD) causes vascular inflammation and necrosis in a wide range of organs and tissues. In the thorax, it may cause vascular complications, affecting the aorta, brachiocephalic arteries, bronchial arteries, pulmonary arteries, pulmonary veins, capillaries, and mediastinal and thoracic inlet veins. In BD, chest radiograph is commonly used for the initial assessment of pulmonary symptoms and complications and for follow-up and establishment of the response to treatment.
