ABO Blood Group and Auditory Function in Young Adults.

Indian J Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg

December 2024

Introduction: In recent years, research on the effect of blood group on hearing function has gained more attention. Some blood groups show susceptibility to certain general health and auditory disorders like noise induced hearing loss, infections, coronary artery disease, gastric carcinoma and duodenal ulcer.

Aims: The present study aimed to determine the differences in middle ear and cochlear function among persons with different blood groups (AB, A, B, O).

Introduction: Indigenous plants are plant species that are native to a specific region and have evolved naturally and adapted to local environmental conditions over a long period.

Aim: This study aimed to explore the anti-arthritic effects of Atylosia goensis, an indigenous plant species in the Western Ghats of India.

Methodology: An ethanolic extract of Atylosia goensis was obtained using the Soxhlet extraction method, which revealed a diverse array of phytochemicals through liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy (LC-MS).

Article Synopsis
  • Seizures after CSF rhinorrhoea or skull base surgery typically indicate postoperative meningoencephalitis unless proven otherwise.
  • A case is presented of a woman in her 40s who had surgery for a CSF fistula and experienced seizure on the eighth day afterward, leading to a diagnosis of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES).
  • Early detection and treatment of PRES allowed for her full recovery, highlighting the need for considering this diagnosis in similar cases to avoid serious health complications.

Background And Objectives: Nearly one in ten individuals in South-East Asia are estimated to be affected by chronic kidney disease (CKD). The burden of end-stage kidney disease is significant and can be heavy on the healthcare system. The recent EMPA-KIDNEY trial demonstrated a significant reduction in the risk of kidney disease progression or cardiovascular death in patients with CKD with a broad range of kidney function using add-on empagliflozin versus standard of care (SoC) alone.

Objective: Early surgical debridement is vital for favorable outcomes in acute invasive fungal sinusitis (AIFS). Our study aimed to propose guidelines with tailored, conservative surgical procedures based on areas of involvement and evaluate their usefulness in avoiding repeated debridement.

Methods: This retrospective observational study was conducted on 150 AIFS patients operated on with the proposed surgical guidelines from May to June 2021 at a tertiary care hospital.

Objective: To describe clinicoradiological features and surgical outcomes in a series of nine patients with rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) who presented with Pott's puffy tumor (ROCM-PPT).

Methods: The records of nine patients with ROCM-PPT seen between March 2020 and December 2021 were analysed. Clinical features, radiology, histopathology, operative findings, management and outcome were noted.

Chloride is a key anion involved in cellular physiology by regulating its homeostasis and rheostatic processes. Changes in cellular Cl- concentration result in differential regulation of cellular functions such as transcription and translation, post-translation modifications, cell cycle and proliferation, cell volume, and pH levels. In intracellular compartments, Cl- modulates the function of lysosomes, mitochondria, endosomes, phagosomes, the nucleus, and the endoplasmic reticulum.

Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the potential for bimodal auditory and noninvasive electrical stimulation at the ears to alleviate tonal, somatic tinnitus that was investigated in a small preliminary trial (11 participants).

Design: Auditory stimulation took the form of short "notched noise" bursts customized to each participant's tinnitus percept. Simultaneous pulsed electrical stimulation, intended to facilitate neuroplasticity, was delivered via hydrogel electrodes placed in opposite ears.

Listeners performed two different tasks in which they remembered short sequences comprising either complex tones (generally heard as one melody) or everyday sounds (generally heard as separate objects). In one, listeners judged whether a probe item had been present in the preceding sequence. In the other, they judged whether a second sequence of the same items was identical in order to the preceding sequence.

We aimed to compare the demography, clinical profile, histopathology, fungal culture, radiology, surgery performed, medical therapy and outcomes of patients with acute invasive fungal sinusitis seen during the first and second waves of the COVID-19 pandemic by retrospectively reviewing their case records. Of 238 patients, 43(18.1%) presented during the first wave and 195(81.

Orbital abscesses are primarily seen in children as complication of ethmoid bacterial sinusitis. We report a case of invasive aspergillosis causing orbital abscess in an immunocompetent child which resolved with surgery followed by antifungal therapy. This case highlights need for histopathological, and microbiological examination, including fungal culture in such cases.

Sarcomas are a heterogenous group of tumours that commonly carry poor prognosis with limited therapeutic options. Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with sarcoma are a unique and understudied patient population that have only achieved modest survival gains compared to other groups. We present our institutional experience of AYAs with sarcoma who underwent comprehensive molecular profiling (CMP) via either large-panel targeted DNA sequencing or whole genome and transcriptome sequencing and evaluated the feasibility and clinical impact of this approach.

Little is known about the molecular basis of host defense in resistant wild species Zingiber zerumbet (L.) Smith against the soil-borne, necrotrophic oomycete pathogen Pythium myriotylum Drechsler, which causes the devastating soft rot disease in the spice crop ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe). We investigated the pattern of host defense between Z.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the impact of population diversity and geographic variation on tumor mutation burden (TMB) scores across cancers and its implication on stratification of patients for immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study used whole-exome sequencing (WES) to profile 1,233 Indian patients with cancer across 30 different cancer types and to estimate their TMB scores. A WES-based pipeline was adopted, along with an indigenously developed strategy for arriving at true somatic mutations.

Article Synopsis
  • Mucormycosis, an acute fungal infection, primarily affects immunocompromised individuals, notably those with uncontrolled diabetes, and saw a surge in cases in India during the COVID-19 pandemic due to a lack of previous data on its molecular epidemiology.
  • The study involved whole genome sequencing of 50 Rhizopus spp. isolates from various patient groups (active COVID-19, recovery phase, and COVID-negative) to investigate species identification and genetic variation related to antifungal resistance.
  • Results showed all patients had acute fungal rhinosinusitis, with notable high HbA1c levels and a significant percentage on steroids; genetic analysis revealed distinct groupings of isolates and notable mutations associated

Introduction: The diverse subtypes of thyroid carcinoma have distinct clinical outcomes despite a comparable spectrum of underlying genetic alterations. Beyond genetic alterations, sparse efforts have been made to characterize the microbes associated with thyroid cancer. In this study, we examine the microbial profile of thyroid cancer.

Ameloblastic carcinoma is an odontogenic neoplasm with combined features of ameloblastoma and carcinoma on histopathological examination. Its prognosis is dominated by risk of local recurrence and distant metastasis. We report our patient because of the rare site and to highlight the importance of early, aggressive surgical treatment and regular follow-up.
