Background: The competence model states that what is most important is to have the elements to solve problems since abstract training does not provide enough tools to solve them. Therefore, it uses key and auxiliary competences that are linked to values such as attitudes. This study was performed to explore these competences.

Article Synopsis
  • Multiple cervical spine fractures are uncommon and often treated conservatively, but there are few surgical interventions reported.
  • A 46-year-old male patient with significant cervical fractures underwent a two-stage surgical procedure at a specialized facility, following a motor vehicle accident.
  • After 19 months, the patient showed neurological improvement and returned to work, suggesting that surgical treatment of multiple fractures can lead to positive outcomes when tailored to individual cases.

Background: Achilles tendon tear is a prevalent condition in our setting. There is no consensus in the literature regarding the ideal treatment modality or the right immobilization period before starting physiatrics. The harmful effect of prolonged immobilization is widely known, so the functional results of early versus late physical therapy are compared in patients subjected to surgery for Achilles tendon tear.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of two different antimicrobial prophylaxis regimens (short cycle vs. standard) in preventing acute postoperative infections in orthopedic surgery for limb diseases.
  • In a randomized, double-blind trial involving 131 patients, one group received a 24-hour cefalotin followed by ten days of dicloxacillin, while the other group received the same initial treatment and then a placebo for ten days.
  • The results showed no significant difference in infection rates between the two groups, suggesting that a short-term cefalotin regimen is equally effective as the longer one with dicloxacillin, indicating no need for prolonged antibiotic use in clean surgical wounds.

Background: Knowledge of the morphometric anatomy of cervical pedicles is essential for the safe and accurate placement of pedicle screws during instrumentation of the cervical spine. Screw placement in the lumbar and thoracic vertebrae is considered as a safe practice, unlike the cervical vertebrae due to the risks involved. There are few reports on this technique.

Introduction: The primary treatment for the giant cell tumor (GCT) at the knee level, both distal femur and proximal tibia remains curettage and application of methyl methacrylate. In the cases where recurrence occurs, controversy exists in the decision making algorithm whether to preserve the joint, or to perform en bloc resection.

Case Report: We report a case of GCT that relapsed at proximal tibia in a stage III of Enneking, in a 26 year old patient, that was handled with en bloc resection, transportation and bone arthrodesis using an AO type tubular external fixator (Synthes).
